Journal ArticleDOI
Increased Heat Transport in Ultra-hot Jupiter Atmospheres through H 2 Dissociation and Recombination
Taylor J. Bell,Nicolas B. Cowan +1 more
TL;DR: In this article, a simple energy balance model with eastward winds was used to demonstrate that H2 dissociation/recombination can significantly increase the day-night heat transport on ultra-hot Jupiters.
Journal ArticleDOI
Increased Heat Transport in Ultra-Hot Jupiter Atmospheres Through H$_2$ Dissociation/Recombination
Taylor J. Bell,Nicolas B. Cowan +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, a simple energy balance model with eastward winds was proposed to study the effects of molecular hydrogen recombination on atmospheric heat recirculation. But the model was only applied to ultra-hot Jupiters (UHJs) where significant H$_2$ dissociation occurs.
Journal ArticleDOI
Evidence for H$_{2}$ Dissociation and Recombination Heat Transport in the Atmosphere of KELT-9b
Megan Mansfield,Jacob L. Bean,Kevin B. Stevenson,Thaddeus D. Komacek,Taylor J. Bell,Xianyu Tan,Matej Malik,Thomas G. Beatty,Ian Wong,Nicolas B. Cowan,Lisa Dang,Jean-Michel Desert,Jonathan J. Fortney,B. Scott Gaudi,Dylan Keating,Eliza M.-R. Kempton,Laura Kreidberg,Michael R. Line,Vivien Parmentier,Keivan G. Stassun,Mark R. Swain,Robert T. Zellem +21 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present a phase curve of KELT-9b observed with the Spitzer Space Telescope at 4.5 $\mu$m, which is the hottest known transiting planet.
Journal ArticleDOI

TL;DR: McGill Space Institute, FRQNT through the Centre de recherche en astrophysique du Quebec, Royal Astronomical Society, NASA, European Research Council under the European Union's Seventh Framework Programme/ERC [336792], NASA [NAS 5-26555]
Journal ArticleDOI
Mass loss from the exoplanet WASP-12b inferred from Spitzer phase curves
Taylor J. Bell,Michael Zhang,Patricio E. Cubillos,Lisa Dang,Luca Fossati,Kamen O. Todorov,Nicolas B. Cowan,Drake Deming,Robert T. Zellem,Kevin B. Stevenson,Ian J. M. Crossfield,Ian Dobbs-Dixon,Jonathan J. Fortney,Heather A. Knutson,Michael R. Line +14 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors present an analysis of two sets of 3.6 and 4.5 μm Spitzer phase curve observations of the system which show clear evidence of infrared radiation from gas stripped from the planet, and the gas appears to be flowing directly toward or away from the host star.
