Journal ArticleDOI
A continuum from clear to cloudy hot-Jupiter exoplanets without primordial water depletion
David K. Sing,Jonathan J. Fortney,Nikolay Nikolov,Hannah R. Wakeford,Tiffany Kataria,Thomas M. Evans,Suzanne Aigrain,Gilda E. Ballester,Adam Burrows,Drake Deming,Jean-Michel Desert,Neale P. Gibson,Gregory W. Henry,Catherine M. Huitson,Heather Knutson,Alain Lecavelier des Etangs,Frederic Pont,Adam P. Showman,Alfred Vidal-Madjar,Michael H. Williamson,Paul Wilson +20 more
TL;DR: The difference between the planetary radius measured at optical and infrared wavelengths is an effective metric for distinguishing different atmosphere types, so that strong water absorption lines are seen in clear-atmosphere planets and the weakest features are associated with clouds and hazes.
Journal ArticleDOI
A Gaussian process framework for modelling instrumental systematics: application to transmission spectroscopy
Neale P. Gibson,Suzanne Aigrain,Steve G. Roberts,Thomas M. Evans,Michael A. Osborne,Frederic Pont +5 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors proposed a nonparametric Gaussian Process (GP) method to infer transit parameters in the presence of systematic noise using Gaussian processes, a technique widely used in the machine learning community for Bayesian regression and classification problems.
Journal ArticleDOI
Helium in the eroding atmosphere of an exoplanet
Jessica Spake,David K. Sing,David K. Sing,Thomas M. Evans,Antonija Oklopčić,Vincent Bourrier,Laura Kreidberg,Benjamin V. Rackham,Jonathan Irwin,David Ehrenreich,Aurélien Wyttenbach,Hannah R. Wakeford,Yifan Zhou,Katy L. Chubb,Nikolay Nikolov,Jayesh M. Goyal,Gregory W. Henry,Michael H. Williamson,Sarah D. Blumenthal,David R. Anderson,Coel Hellier,David Charbonneau,Stéphane Udry,Nikku Madhusudhan +23 more
TL;DR: A detection of helium absorption at 10,833 Å on the exoplanet WASP-107b reveals that its atmosphere is extended and eroding, and demonstrates a new way to study upper exoplanetary atmospheres.
Journal ArticleDOI
An ultrahot gas-giant exoplanet with a stratosphere
Thomas M. Evans,David K. Sing,Tiffany Kataria,Jayesh M. Goyal,Nikolay Nikolov,Hannah R. Wakeford,Drake Deming,Mark S. Marley,David S. Amundsen,David S. Amundsen,Gilda E. Ballester,Joanna K. Barstow,Lotfi Ben-Jaffel,Vincent Bourrier,Lars A. Buchhave,Ofer Cohen,David Ehrenreich,Antonio García Muñoz,Gregory W. Henry,Heather Knutson,Panayotis Lavvas,Alain Lecavelier des Etangs,Nikole K. Lewis,Mercedes Lopez-Morales,Avi Mandell,Jorge Sanz-Forcada,Pascal Tremblin,Roxana Lupu +27 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors reported a near-infrared thermal spectrum for the ultrahot gas giant WASP-121b, which has an equilibrium temperature of approximately 2,500 kelvin.
Journal ArticleDOI
HST hot-Jupiter transmission spectral survey: evidence for aerosols and lack of TiO in the atmosphere of WASP-12b
David K. Sing,A. Lecavelier des Etangs,J. J. Fortney,Adam Burrows,Frederic Pont,Hannah R. Wakeford,Gilda E. Ballester,Nikolay Nikolov,Gregory W. Henry,Suzanne Aigrain,Drake Deming,Thomas M. Evans,Neale P. Gibson,Catherine M. Huitson,Heather Knutson,Adam P. Showman,Alfred Vidal-Madjar,Paul Wilson,M.H. Williamson,Kevin Zahnle +19 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors presented the HST optical transmission spectra of the transiting hot-Jupiter WASP-12b, taken with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph instrument.
