Rossby Wave Propagation on a Realistic Longitudinally Varying Flow
Brian J. Hoskins,Tércio Ambrizzi +1 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the response of a barotropic model, linearized about a climatological 300-mb December-to-February time-mean flow to localized forcing, is considered and the possible existence of a strong waveguide in the Asian jet and weaker waveguides in the North Atlantic and Southern Hemisphere jets is deduced.
Journal ArticleDOI
Toward a unified view of the American monsoon systems
Carolina Vera,Wayne Higgins,Jorge A. Amador,Tércio Ambrizzi,René D. Garreaud,David Gochis,David S. Gutzler,Dennis P. Lettenmaier,José A. Marengo,Carlos R. Mechoso,Julia Nogués-Paegle,P. L. Silva Dias,Chidong Zhang +12 more
TL;DR: This paper reviewed recent progress in the understanding of the American monsoon systems and identified some of the future challenges that remain to improve warm season climate prediction, including new insights into moisture transport processes, description of the structure and variability of the South American low level jet, and resolution of the diurnal cycle of precipitation in the core monsoon regions.
Journal ArticleDOI
Trends in Total and Extreme South American Rainfall in 1960–2000 and Links with Sea Surface Temperature
M. R. Haylock,Thomas C. Peterson,Lincoln M. Alves,Tércio Ambrizzi,Y. M. T. Anunciação,J. Baez,Vicente R. Barros,M. A. Berlato,Mario Pérez Bidegain,Genaro Coronel,V. Corradi,V. Garcia,Alice M. TL;DR: A weeklong workshop in Brazil in August 2004 provided the opportunity for 28 scientists from southern South America to examine daily rainfall observations to determine changes in both total and extreme rainfall as mentioned in this paper.
Journal ArticleDOI
Observed Trends in Indices of Daily Temperature Extremes in South America 1960–2000
Lucie A. Vincent,Thomas C. Peterson,Vicente R. Barros,M. B. Marino,Matilde Rusticucci,G. Carrasco,E. Ramirez,Lincoln M. Alves,Tércio Ambrizzi,M. A. Berlato,Alice M. Grimm,José A. Marengo,L. Molion,D. TL;DR: A workshop on enhancing climate change indices in South America was held in Maceio, Brazil, in August 2004 as discussed by the authors, where scientists from eight southern countries brought daily climatological data from their region for a meticulous assessment of data quality and homogeneity, and for the preparation of climate change index that can be used for analyses of changes in climate extremes.
