TL;DR: In this article, Antiretroviral therapy that reduces viral replication could limit the transmission of human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) in serodiscordant couples.
Journal ArticleDOI

TL;DR: The early initiation of ART led to a sustained decrease in genetically linked HIV-1 infections in sexual partners, and was associated with a 93% lower risk of linked partner infection than was delayed ART.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effects of early versus delayed initiation of antiretroviral treatment on clinical outcomes of HIV-1 infection: results from the phase 3 HPTN 052 randomised controlled trial
Beatriz Grinsztejn,Mina C. Hosseinipour,Heather J. Ribaudo,Susan Swindells,Joseph J. Eron,Ying Q. Chen,Lei Wang,San San Ou,Maija Anderson,Marybeth McCauley,Theresa Gamble,N. Havlir,Myron S. Cohen +32 more
TL;DR: The clinical benefits recorded, combined with the striking reduction in HIV-1 transmission risk previously reported, provides strong support for earlier initiation of antiretroviral treatment.
Journal ArticleDOI
HIV treatment as prevention and HPTN 052
TL;DR: A randomized, clinical trial demonstrated that antiretroviral therapy reduces the sexual transmission of HIV in HIV-serodiscordant couples by more than 96% and proved central to the development of new global HIV-prevention efforts.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cost-effectiveness of HIV treatment as prevention in serodiscordant couples.
Rochelle P. Walensky,Eric L. Ross,Nagalingeswaran Kumarasamy,Robin Wood,Farzad Noubary,A. David Paltiel,Yoriko M. Nakamura,Sheela Godbole,Ravindre Panchia,Ian Sanne,Milton C. Weinstein,Elena Losina,Kenneth H. Mayer,Kenneth H. Mayer,Ying Q. Chen,Ying Q. Chen,Lei Wang,Lei Wang,Marybeth McCauley,Theresa Gamble,George R. Seage,Myron S. Cohen,Kenneth A. Freedberg +22 more
TL;DR: There is a compelling case for early ART for serodiscordant couples in resource-limited settings and early ART remained very cost-effective over a lifetime under most modeled assumptions in the two countries.
