Journal ArticleDOI

Plasmodium falciparum domain mediating adhesion to chondroitin sulfate A: A receptor for human placental infection

TL;DR: Because protective antibodies present after pregnancy block binding to CSA of parasites from different parts of the world, DBL-3, although variant, may induce cross-reactive immunity that will protect pregnant women and their fetuses.
Journal ArticleDOI

Implication of haematophagous arthropod salivary proteins in host-vector interactions

TL;DR: The potential biological and epidemiological applications of these immunogenic salivary molecules will be discussed with an emphasis on their use as biomarkers of exposure to haematophagous arthropod bites or vaccine candidates that are liable to improve host protection against vector-borne diseases.
Journal ArticleDOI

Genetic diversity and structure of African Plasmodium falciparum populations in urban and rural areas.

TL;DR: A P. falciparum population structure in Africa is shown and a potential effect of rural suburbs to generate genetic diversity in towns is suggested, which could affect the dispersal of selected drug resistance and should be considered when adapting urban malaria control strategies.
Journal ArticleDOI

Platelet microparticles: a new player in malaria parasite cytoadherence to human brain endothelium

TL;DR: It is shown for the first time that platelet microparticles are able to bind to PRBCs, thereby transferring platelet antigens to the PRBC surface and providing a novel target for antagonizing interactions between vascular cells that promote microvascular sludging and blood brain barrier alteration during CM.
