Chan +22 more
TL;DR: SG is associated with significantly lower mortality and fewer blood transfusions, but there is a considerable risk of serious device-related complications, and a major and urgent need for improvement of the available endovascular devices.
Journal ArticleDOI
The importance of fracture pattern in guiding therapeutic decision-making in patients with hemorrhagic shock and pelvic ring disruptions.
TL;DR: Patients with signs of ongoing shock with SFP pelvic injury and hemoperitoneum require celiotomy as the initial intervention, as the hemorrhagic focus is predominantly intraperitoneal.
Journal ArticleDOI
Current management of hemorrhage from severe pelvic fractures: Results of an American Association for the Surgery of Trauma multi-institutional trial.
Todd W. Costantini,Raul Coimbra,John B. Holcomb,Jeanette M. Podbielski,Richard D. Catalano,Allie Blackburn,Thomas M. Scalea,Deborah M. Stein,Lashonda Williams,Joseph Conflitti,Scott Keeney,Ghada Suleiman,Tianhua Zhou,Jason L. Sperry,Dimitra Skiada,Kenji Inaba,Brian Williams,Joseph P. Minei,Alicia Privette,Robert C. Mackersie,Brenton Robinson,Forrest O. Moore +21 more
TL;DR: The use of resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta may prove to be an important adjunct in the treatment of patients with severe pelvic fracture in shock; however, it is in the early stages of evaluation and not currently used widely across trauma centers.
Journal ArticleDOI
Scientific Priorities and Strategic Planning for Resuscitation Research and Life Saving Therapy Following Traumatic Injury: Report of the PULSE Trauma Work Group
C. James Carrico,John B. Holcomb,Irshad H. Chaudry,James M Atkins,Lance B. Becker,Charles B. Cairns,Henry Chang,J. Perren Cobb,James M. Ecklund,Henry R. Halperin,Ahamed H. Somers,Alex Valadka,Carole Webb +23 more
TL;DR: Some of the obstacles are described and various strategies and priorities for basic science, clinical, and translational trauma resuscitation research are outlined for basic and clinical research needs.
Journal ArticleDOI
Blunt Traumatic Thoracic Aortic Injuries: Early or Delayed Repair—Results of an American Association for the Surgery of Trauma Prospective Study
TL;DR: Delayed repair of stable blunt TAI is associated with improved survival, irrespective of the presence or not of major associated injuries, however, delayed repair isassociated with a longer length of ICU stay and in the group of patients with no major associated injury a significantly higher complication rate.
