This article reviews the basic theoretical aspects of graphene, a one-atom-thick allotrope of carbon, with unusual two-dimensional Dirac-like electronic excitations. The Dirac electrons can be controlled by application of external electric and magnetic fields, or by altering sample geometry and/or topology. The Dirac electrons behave in unusual ways in tunneling, confinement, and the integer quantum Hall effect. The electronic properties of graphene stacks are discussed and vary with stacking order and number of layers. Edge (surface) states in graphene depend on the edge termination (zigzag or armchair) and affect the physical properties of nanoribbons. Different types of disorder modify the Dirac equation leading to unusual spectroscopic and transport properties. The effects of electron-electron and electron-phonon interactions in single layer and multilayer graphene are also presented.

We report the measurement of the thermal conductivity of a suspended single-layer graphene. The room temperature values of the thermal conductivity in the range ∼(4.84 ± 0.44) × 103 to (5.30 ± 0.48) × 103 W/mK were extracted for a single-layer graphene from the dependence of the Raman G peak frequency on the excitation laser power and independently measured G peak temperature coefficient. The extremely high value of the thermal conductivity suggests that graphene can outperform carbon nanotubes in heat conduction. The superb thermal conduction property of graphene is beneficial for the proposed electronic applications and establishes graphene as an excellent material for thermal management.

Superior Thermal Conductivity of Single-Layer Graphene

Graphene has been attracting great interest because of its distinctive band structure and physical properties. Today, graphene is limited to small sizes because it is produced mostly by exfoliating graphite. We grew large-area graphene films of the order of centimeters on copper substrates by chemical vapor deposition using methane. The films are predominantly single-layer graphene, with a small percentage (less than 5%) of the area having few layers, and are continuous across copper surface steps and grain boundaries. The low solubility of carbon in copper appears to help make this growth process self-limiting. We also developed graphene film transfer processes to arbitrary substrates, and dual-gated field-effect transistors fabricated on silicon/silicon dioxide substrates showed electron mobilities as high as 4050 square centimeters per volt per second at room temperature.

Large-Area Synthesis of High-Quality and Uniform Graphene Films on Copper Foils

We discuss the electronic properties of graphene and graphene nanoribbons including "pseudo-Rashba" spin-orbit coupling. After summarizing the bulk properties, we first analyze the scattering behavior close to an infinite mass and zigzag boundary. For low energies, we observe strong deviations from the usual spin-conserving behavior at high energies such as reflection acting as spin polarizer or switch. This results in a spin polarization along the direction of the boundary due to the appearance of evanescent modes in the case of non-equilibrium or when there is no coherence between the two one-particle branches. We then discuss the spin and density distribution of graphene nanoribbons.

Optical reflection microscopy is one of the main imaging tools to visualize graphene microstructures. Here is reported a novel method that employs refractive index optimization in an optical reflection microscope, which greatly improves the visibility of graphene flakes. To this end, an immersion liquid with a refractive index that is close to that of the glass support is used in-between the microscope lens and the support improving the contrast and resolution of the sample image. Results show that the contrast of single and few layer graphene crystals and structures can be enhanced by a factor of 4 compared to values commonly achieved with transparent substrates using optical reflection microscopy lacking refractive index optimization.

Enhancement of graphene visibility on transparent substrates by refractive index optimization

We propose a minimal transport experiment in the linear regime that can probe the chirality of twisted moir\'e structures. First, we point out that usual two-terminal conductance measurements cannot access the chirality of a system. Only with a third contact and in the presence of an in-plane magnetic field, a chiral system displays non-reciprocal transport even if all contacts are symmetric. We thus propose to use the third lead as a voltage probe and show that opposite enantiomers give rise to different voltage drops on the third lead. The third lead can also be used as a current probe in the case of layer-discriminating contacts that can detect different handedness even in the absence of a magnetic field. Our exact symmetry considerations are supported by numerical calculations that confirm our conclusions and also demonstrate that there is a change of chirality around the magic angle.

Chirality probe of twisted bilayer graphene in the linear transport regime

By an integral equation approach to the time-harmonic classical Maxwell equations, we describe the dispersion in the nonretarded frequency regime of the edge plasmon-polariton (EPP) on a semi-infinite flat sheet. The sheet has an arbitrary, physically admissible, tensor valued and spatially homogeneous conductivity, and serves as a model for a family of two-dimensional conducting materials. We formulate a system of integral equations for the electric field tangential to the sheet in a homogeneous and isotropic ambient medium. We show how this system is simplified via a length scale separation. This view entails the quasi-electrostatic approximation, by which the tangential electric field is replaced by the gradient of a scalar potential, $\varphi$. By the Wiener-Hopf method, we solve an integral equation for $\varphi$ in some generality. The EPP dispersion relation comes from the elimination of a divergent limiting Fourier integral for $\varphi$ at the edge. We connect the existence, or lack thereof, of the EPP dispersion relation to the index for Wiener-Hopf integral equations, an integer of topological character. We indicate that the values of this index may express an asymmetry due to the material anisotropy in the number of wave modes propagating on the sheet away from the edge with respect to the EPP direction of propagation. We discuss extensions such as the setting of two semi-infinite, coplanar sheets. Our theory forms a generalization of the treatment by Volkov and Mikhailov (1988 Sov. Phys. JETP 67 1639).
