Journal ArticleDOI
A diagnosis of the metabolic syndrome in youth that resolves by adult life is associated with a normalization of high carotid intima-media thickness and type 2 diabetes mellitus risk: the Bogalusa heart and cardiovascular risk in young Finns studies.
Costan G. Magnussen,Juha Koskinen,Markus Juonala,Markus Juonala,Wei Chen,Sathanur R. Srinivasan,Matthew A. Sabin,Russell Thomson,Michael D. Schmidt,Quoc Manh Nguyen,Jihua Xu,Michael R. Skilton,Mika Kähönen,Tomi Laitinen,Leena Taittonen,Terho Lehtimäki,Tapani Rönnemaa,Jorma Viikari,Gerald S. Berenson,Olli T. Raitakari,Olli T. Raitakari +20 more
TL;DR: Although youth with MetS are at increased risk of adult high IMT and T2DM, these data indicate that the resolution of youth MetS by adulthood can go some way to normalize this risk to levels seen in those who have never had MetS.
Journal ArticleDOI
Cardiovascular Risk Factors From Childhood and Midlife Cognitive Performance: The Young Finns Study
Suvi P. Rovio,Katja Pahkala,Jaakko Nevalainen,Markus Juonala,Pia Salo,Mika Kähönen,Nina Hutri-Kähönen,Terho Lehtimäki,Eero Jokinen,Tomi Laitinen,Leena Taittonen,Päivi Tossavainen,Jorma Viikari,Juha O. Rinne,Olli T. Raitakari +14 more
TL;DR: High systolic BP, elevated serum total-cholesterol, and smoking from childhood were independently associated with worse midlife cognitive performance, especially memory and learning.
Journal ArticleDOI
Power spectral analysis of heart rate variability during hyperinsulinemia in nondiabetic offspring of type 2 diabetic patients: evidence for possible early autonomic dysfunction in insulin-resistant subjects.
Tomi Laitinen,I. K. J. Vauhkonen,L. K. Niskanen,Juha Hartikainen,Esko Länsimies,M Uusitupa,Mauri Laakso +6 more
TL;DR: The HRV response to acute hyperinsulinemia in the offspring of type 2 diabetic probands was likely to be modulated by the type 1 diabetic phenotype of the parent, and in insulin-resistant subjects, autonomic dysfunction may be an earlier defect than hitherto acknowledged.
Journal ArticleDOI
Dietary factors associated with overweight and body adiposity in Finnish children aged 6-8 years: the PANIC Study.
Aino-Maija Eloranta,Virpi Lindi,Ursula Schwab,Tuomo Tompuri,Sanna Kiiskinen,Hanna-Maaria Lakka,Tomi Laitinen,Timo A. Lakka +7 more
TL;DR: Promoting regular consumption of main meals and healthy eating behaviours should be emphasized in the prevention of overweight among children as more research is needed on the association of protein-rich foods with body adiposity in children.
Journal ArticleDOI
Effect of diet-induced weight loss on plasma apelin and cytokine levels in individuals with the metabolic syndrome
M.V. Heinonen,David E. Laaksonen,T. Karhu,Leila Karhunen,Tomi Laitinen,Sakari Kainulainen,Aila Rissanen,Leo Niskanen,Karl-Heinz Herzig,Karl-Heinz Herzig +9 more
TL;DR: The results suggest that apelin may not be that strongly correlated with the fat mass as an adipokine like the more abundant adipokines adiponectin or leptin and it might be involved in the regulation of inflammation and cardiovascular tone.
