Deep learning is a form of machine learning that enables computers to learn from experience and understand the world in terms of a hierarchy of concepts. Because the computer gathers knowledge from experience, there is no need for a human computer operator to formally specify all the knowledge that the computer needs. The hierarchy of concepts allows the computer to learn complicated concepts by building them out of simpler ones; a graph of these hierarchies would be many layers deep. This book introduces a broad range of topics in deep learning. The text offers mathematical and conceptual background, covering relevant concepts in linear algebra, probability theory and information theory, numerical computation, and machine learning. It describes deep learning techniques used by practitioners in industry, including deep feedforward networks, regularization, optimization algorithms, convolutional networks, sequence modeling, and practical methodology; and it surveys such applications as natural language processing, speech recognition, computer vision, online recommendation systems, bioinformatics, and videogames. Data Mining: Concepts and Techniques

A major assumption in many machine learning and data mining algorithms is that the training and future data must be in the same feature space and have the same distribution. However, in many real-world applications, this assumption may not hold. For example, we sometimes have a classification task in one domain of interest, but we only have sufficient training data in another domain of interest, where the latter data may be in a different feature space or follow a different data distribution. In such cases, knowledge transfer, if done successfully, would greatly improve the performance of learning by avoiding much expensive data-labeling efforts. In recent years, transfer learning has emerged as a new learning framework to address this problem. This survey focuses on categorizing and reviewing the current progress on transfer learning for classification, regression, and clustering problems. In this survey, we discuss the relationship between transfer learning and other related machine learning techniques such as domain adaptation, multitask learning and sample selection bias, as well as covariate shift. We also explore some potential future issues in transfer learning research.

Detecting Anomalies in a Time Series Database

Assessment of genetic diversity in common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) germplasm using amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP)

Monthly data from the moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) and its predecessor satellite sensors was used to reconstruct vegetation dynamics in response to climate patterns over the period 1983–2005. Results suggest that plant growth over extensive land areas of southern Africa and Central Asia were the most closely coupled of any major land area to El Nino–southern oscillation (ENSO) effects on regional climate. Others land areas strongly tied to recent ENSO climate effects were in northern Canada, Alaska, western US, northern Mexico, northern Argentina, and Australia. Localized variations in precipitation were the most common controllers of monthly values for the fraction absorbed of photosynthetically active radiation (FPAR) over these regions. In addition to the areas cited above, seasonal FPAR values from MODIS were closely coupled to rainfall patterns in grassland and cropland areas of the northern and central US. Historical associations between global vegetation FPAR and atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) anomalies suggest that the terrestrial biosphere can contribute major fluxes of CO2 during major drought events, such as those triggered by 1997–1998 El Nino event.

Terrestrial vegetation dynamics and global climate controls

Graph partitioning has been shown to be an effective way to divide a large computation over an arbitrary number of processors. A good partitioning can ensure load balance and minimize the communication overhead of the computation by partitioning an irregular mesh into p equal parts while minimizing the number of edges cut by the partition. For a large class of irregular mesh applications, the structure of the graph changes from one phase of the computation to the next. Eventually, as the graph evolves, the adapted mesh has to be repartitioned to ensure good load balance. Failure to do so will lead to higher parallel run time. This repartitioning needs to maintain a low edge-cut in order to minimize communication overhead in the follow-on computation. It also needs to minimize the time for physically migrating data from one processor to another since this time can dominate overall run time. Finally, it must be fast and scalable since it may be necessary to repartition frequently. Partitioning the adapted mesh again from scratch with an existing graph partitioner can be done quickly and will result in a low edge-cut. However, it will lead to an excessive migration of data among processors. In this paper, we present new parallel algorithms for robustly computing repartitionings of adaptively refined meshes. These algorithms perform diffusion of vertices in a multilevel framework and minimize data movement without compromising the edge-cut. Furthermore, our parallel repartitioners include parameterized heuristics to specifically optimize edge-cut, total data migration, or the maximum amount of data migrated into and out of any one processor. Our results on a variety of synthetic meshes show that our parallel multilevel diffusion algorithms are highly robust schemes for repartitioning adaptive meshes. The resulting edge-cuts are close to those resulting from partitioning from scratch with a state-of-the-art graph partitioner, while data migration is substantially reduced. Furthermore, repartitioning can be done very fast. Our experiments show that meshes with around eight million vertices can be repartitioned on a 256-processor Cray T3D in only a couple of seconds.

Parallel Multilevel Diffusion Algorithms for Repartitioning of Adaptive Meshes

The new computational technologies are having a very strong influence on numerical optimization, in several different ways. Many researchers have been stimulated by the need to either conform the existing numerical techniques to the new parallel architectures or to devise completely new parallel solution approaches. A mini-symposium on Parallel Computing in Nonlinear Optimization was held in Naples, Italy, September 2001, during the International Conference ParCo2001, in order to bring together researchers active in this field and to discuss and share their findings. Some of the papers presented during the mini-symposium, as well as additional contributions from other researchers are collected in this special issue. Clearly, two different trends, well representative for most of the current research activities, can be identified. Firstly, there is an attempt to encapsulate parallel linear algebra software and algorithms into optimization codes, particularly codes implementing interior point strategies for which the linear algebra issues are very critical, and secondly, there is an effort to devise new parallel solution strategies in global optimization, either for specific or general purpose problems, motivated by the large size and the combinatorial nature of them. In the present paper we review the literature on these trends and classify the contributed papers within this framework.
