Deposits of clastic carbonate-dominated (calciclastic) sedimentary slope systems in the rock record have been identified mostly as linearly-consistent carbonate apron deposits, even though most ancient clastic carbonate slope deposits fit the submarine fan systems better. Calciclastic submarine fans are consequently rarely described and are poorly understood. Subsequently, very little is known especially in mud-dominated calciclastic submarine fan systems. Presented in this study are a sedimentological core and petrographic characterisation of samples from eleven boreholes from the Lower Carboniferous of Bowland Basin (Northwest England) that reveals a >250 m thick calciturbidite complex deposited in a calciclastic submarine fan setting. Seven facies are recognised from core and thin section characterisation and are grouped into three carbonate turbidite sequences. They include: 1) Calciturbidites, comprising mostly of highto low-density, wavy-laminated bioclast-rich facies; 2) low-density densite mudstones which are characterised by planar laminated and unlaminated muddominated facies; and 3) Calcidebrites which are muddy or hyper-concentrated debrisflow deposits occurring as poorly-sorted, chaotic, mud-supported floatstones. Surface science studies of model fuel cell electrocatalysts

Collective electronic excitations at metal surfaces are well known to play a key role in a wide spectrum of science, ranging from physics and materials science to biology. Here we focus on a theoretical description of the many-body dynamical electronic response of solids, which underlines the existence of various collective electronic excitations at metal surfaces, such as the conventional surface plasmon, multipole plasmons and the recently predicted acoustic surface plasmon. We also review existing calculations, experimental measurements and applications.

Interaction of slow multicharged ions with solid surfaces

Neutralization of Fast Molecular Ions H + 2 and N + 2 at Surfaces

A time-of-flight mass spectrometer has been constructed to measure the energy spectra of particles scattered by 10° with primary energies between 200 eV and 15 keV. The energy resolution Δ EE of the system is between 0.1 and 0.4%. Energy spectra of scattered molecules and their dissociation products are shown for 570 eV H2+ and 4430 eV N2+ as projectiles. Electron capture into unbound states of the neutral molecule, with perhaps some contribution from mutual scattering within the molecule, appears to explain the observed dissociation product energy spectra peak widths.

Time-of-flight measurements of light molecular ions scattered at grazing incidence from a Ni(111) surface

Scattering of particles at grazing angles from solid surfaces can be used to study surface channeling effects. We have used ions with a few keV primary energy scattered from Au(110) and a position-sensitive detector (PSD) to monitor the angular distribution of reflected particles. The distributions agree with theoretically expected dependencies on impact angle and azimuthal orientation. We followed these distributions through the (1 × 2) (1 × 1) phase transition of the Au(110) surface.

Experimental realisation of low-energy surface channeling

Experiments on energy dissipation of He-particles interacting with metal surfaces have been performed. The energy range used was 1 – 5 keV. The particles were scattered off a Ni(110) surface at grazing incident angle (5°) and detected under specular reflection condition with a time-of-flight system.
