Journal ArticleDOI
The JAK/STAT pathway in obesity and diabetes.
Esteban Nicolas Gurzov,Esteban Nicolas Gurzov,William J Stanley,William J Stanley,Evan G Pappas,Evan G Pappas,Helen E. Thomas,Helen E. Thomas,Daniel Dj Gough,Daniel Dj Gough +9 more
TL;DR: The role of JAK/STAT activation in the brain, liver, muscle, fat and pancreas, and how this affects the course of the disease is analyzed and the therapeutic implications are considered.
Journal ArticleDOI
Inhibition of hIAPP Amyloid Aggregation and Pancreatic β‐Cell Toxicity by OH‐Terminated PAMAM Dendrimer
Esteban Nicolas Gurzov,Bo Wang,Emily H. Pilkington,Pengyu Chen,Aleksandr Kakinen,William J Stanley,Sara A Litwak,Eric Hanssen,Thomas P. Davis,Feng Ding,Pu Chun Ke +10 more
TL;DR: It is shown that generation-3 OH-terminated poly(amidoamine) dendrimer, a polymeric nanoparticle, can effectively halt the aggregation of hIAPP and shut down hI APP toxicity in pancreatic MIN6 and NIT-1 cells as well as in mouse islets.
Journal ArticleDOI
Graphene oxide inhibits hIAPP amyloid fibrillation and toxicity in insulin-producing NIT-1 cells
Praveen Nedumpully-Govindan,Esteban Nicolas Gurzov,Esteban Nicolas Gurzov,Pengyu Chen,Emily H. Pilkington,William J Stanley,William J Stanley,Sara A Litwak,Thomas P. Davis,Thomas P. Davis,Pu Chun Ke,Feng Ding +11 more
TL;DR: This multidisciplinary study suggests that GO nanosheets have the potential to be utilized as an anti-aggregation nanomedicine itself in addition to a biosensor or delivery vehicle for the mitigation of T2D progression.
Journal ArticleDOI
Star Polymers Reduce Islet Amyloid Polypeptide Toxicity via Accelerated Amyloid Aggregation
Emily H. Pilkington,May Lai,Xinwei Ge,William J Stanley,Bo Wang,Miaoyi Wang,Aleksandr Kakinen,Marc-Antonie Sani,Michael Whittaker,Esteban Nicolas Gurzov,Esteban Nicolas Gurzov,Feng Ding,John Jf Quinn,Thomas P. Davis,Thomas P. Davis,Pu Chun Ke +15 more
TL;DR: New light is shed on the structure–toxicity relationship of IAPP and the potential of exploiting star polymers as a new class of therapeutic agents against amyloidogenesis is pointed to.
Journal ArticleDOI
Pancreatic β-Cell Membrane Fluidity and Toxicity Induced by Human Islet Amyloid Polypeptide Species.
Emily H. Pilkington,Esteban Nicolas Gurzov,Esteban Nicolas Gurzov,Aleksandr Kakinen,Sara A Litwak,William J Stanley,William J Stanley,Thomas P. Davis,Thomas P. Davis,Pu Chun Ke +9 more
TL;DR: A biophysical scheme based on the use of a lipophilic Laurdan dye for examining MIN6 cell membranes upon exposure to fresh and oligomeric hIAPP as well as mature amyloid is shown, which offers a new insight into β-cell toxicity induced by controlled hI APP species.
