High-Performance Piezoelectric Energy Harvesters and Their Applications

Recent development in lead-free perovskite piezoelectric bulk materials

Energy harvesting technologies have been explored by researchers for more than two decades as an alternative to conventional power sources (e.g. batteries) for small-sized and low-power electronic devices. The limited life-time and necessity for periodic recharging or replacement of batteries has been a consistent issue in portable, remote, and implantable devices. Ambient energy can usually be found in the form of solar energy, thermal energy, and vibration energy. Amongst these energy sources, vibration energy presents a persistent presence in nature and manmade structures. Various materials and transduction mechanisms have the ability to convert vibratory energy to useful electrical energy, such as piezoelectric, electromagnetic, and electrostatic generators. Piezoelectric transducers, with their inherent electromechanical coupling and high power density compared to electromagnetic and electrostatic transducers, have been widely explored to generate power from vibration energy sources. A topical review of piezoelectric energy harvesting methods was carried out and published in this journal by the authors in 2007. Since 2007, countless researchers have introduced novel materials, transduction mechanisms, electrical circuits, and analytical models to improve various aspects of piezoelectric energy harvesting devices. Additionally, many researchers have also reported novel applications of piezoelectric energy harvesting technology in the past decade. While the body of literature in the field of piezoelectric energy harvesting has grown significantly since 2007, this paper presents an update to the authors' previous review paper by summarizing the notable developments in the field of piezoelectric energy harvesting through the past decade.

Giant Piezoelectric Coefficients in Relaxor Piezoelectric Ceramic PNN-PZT for Vibration Energy Harvesting

Conventionally, effective mechanical vibration energy harvesting is based on (Pb,Zr)TiO3 (PZT) ceramics, poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) polymers or PVDF/PZT or other piezoelectric composite materials, and their working temperature is normally limited to room temperature (R-T) or below 150 °C. Here, bismuth scandium lead titanate (BiScO3-PbTiO3, abbreviated as BSPT) ceramic is reported which has a high Curie temperature point around 450 °C and its application for high-temperature (H-T) vibration energy harvesting. Experimental results show that it exhibits an excellent H-T piezoelectricity, converting mechanical vibration energy into electric power effectively in a wide temperature range from R-T till 250 °C. This research shows the BSPT piezoelectric energy harvester having the potential application for self-power source of wireless sensor network system in high temperature circumstance.

Giant Piezoelectricity of Ternary Perovskite Ceramics at High Temperatures

In this paper, we report a barbell-shaped piezoelectric energy harvester (BSPEH) operating in a d33 mode and aiming for mechanical vibration energy harvesting in a high temperature (H-T) circumstance. BSPEH is composed of a ring-shaped multilayer piezo-stack, a tip mass, and an elastic shaft connecting them together. The piezo-stack is made of bismuth scandium lead titanate (BiScO3-PbTiO3) ceramic with a large piezoelectric coefficient of d33 = 450 pC/N and a high Curie temperature point Tc of around 450 °C. Experimental results show that the BSPEH works effectively and steadily in a wide temperature range from room temperature (R-T) till Tc/2. Furthermore, it is found that under a constant mechanical vibration excitation, the power output of the BSPEH at 200 °C is even two times higher than that at R-T. The proposed harvester shows a great potential for applications as a self-power source of wire-less sensor system in H-T circumstance.
