Journal ArticleDOI
Impaired local intrinsic immunity to SARS-CoV-2 infection in severe COVID-19.
Carly G. K. Ziegler,Vincent N. Miao,Anna H. Owings,Andrew W. Navia,Ying Tang,Joshua D. Bromley,Peter Lotfy,Peter Lotfy,Meredith Sloan,Hannah Laird,Haley B. Williams,Micayla George,Micayla George,Micayla George,Riley S. Drake,Riley S. Drake,Riley S. Drake,Taylor Christian,Adam M. Parker,Campbell B Sindel,Molly W. Burger,Yilianys Pride,Mohammad H. Hasan,George E. Abraham,Michal Senitko,Tanya O. Robinson,Alex K. Shalek,Sarah C. Glover,Bruce H. Horwitz,Bruce H. Horwitz,Jose Ordovas-Montanes +30 more
TL;DR: In this article, the authors performed scRNA-seq on nasopharyngeal swabs from 58 healthy and COVID-19 participants, and identified genes associated with susceptibility, resistance, or infection response.
Journal ArticleDOI
Reduced density of calbindin immunoreactive GABAergic neurons in the occipital cortex in major depression: relevance to neuroimaging studies.
Dorota Maciag,Jonathan Hughes,Gillian O'Dwyer,Yilianys Pride,Craig A. Stockmeier,Craig A. Stockmeier,Gerard Sanacora,Grazyna Rajkowska +7 more
TL;DR: The reduction in the density of CB-IR GABAergic neurons in the occipital cortex in depression is similar to that observed previously in the prefrontal cortex.

TL;DR: This work defines both protective and detrimental host responses to SARS-CoV-2, determines the direct viral targets of infection, and suggests that failed anti-viral epithelial immunity in the nasal mucosa may underlie the progression to severe COVID-19.
Journal ArticleDOI
The gut microbiome of COVID-19 recovered patients returns to uninfected status in a minority-dominated United States cohort.
Rachel C. Newsome,Josee Gauthier,Maria C. Hernandez,George E. Abraham,Tanya O. Robinson,Haley B. Williams,Meredith Sloan,Anna H. Owings,Hannah Laird,Taylor Christian,Yilianys Pride,Kenneth J. Wilson,Mohammad H. Hasan,Adam M. Parker,Michal Senitko,Sarah C. Glover,Sarah C. Glover,Raad Z. Gharaibeh,Christian Jobin +18 more
TL;DR: In this paper, the relationship between intestinal microbiota and SARS-CoV-2-mediated pathogenicity in a United States, majority African American cohort was investigated, where 16S rRNA sequencing and qPCR analysis was performed on fecal DNA/RNA.
Journal ArticleDOI
Examination of gene expression in saliva samples from COVID-19 patients to study the host defense response against SARS-CoV-2 in the oral cavity
Gill Diamond,Erika L. Figgins,Tanya O. Robinson,Michal Senitko,George E. Abraham,Haley B. Williams,Meredith Sloan,Anna H. Owings,Hannah Laird,Yilianys Pride,Kenneth J. Wilson,Mohammad H. Hasan,Adam M. Parker,Sarah C. Glover +13 more
TL;DR: It is suggested that infection of the oral cavity and nasopharynx (ONP) is an obligate step in its pathogenesis, suggesting that innate and adaptive immune responses in the oral epithelia are almost certainly involved in the defense against SARS-CoV-2 infection.
