Non-precious-metal catalysts for alkaline water electrolysis: operando characterizations, theoretical calculations, and recent advances

TL;DR: The most recent advances in NPCs for AWE were systematically reviewed, emphasizing the application of in situ/operando experimental methods and density functional theory (DFT) calculations in their understanding and development.
Journal ArticleDOI

High electrochemical activity of the oxide phase in model ceria–Pt and ceria–Ni composite anodes

TL;DR: It is demonstrated unambiguously, through the use of ceria-metal structures with well-defined geometries and interfaces, that the near-equilibrium H(2) oxidation reaction pathway is dominated by electrocatalysis at the oxide/gas interface with minimal contributions from the oxide-metal/gas triple-phase boundaries.
Journal ArticleDOI

Carbon-based electrocatalysts for sustainable energy applications

TL;DR: Carbon-based materials have multiple advantages including abundant sources, tunable molecular structures, high electronic conductivity, and environmental compatibility as mentioned in this paper. But, there is no systematic review yet covering all the general methods to boost carbon-based electrocatalysts for ORR/OER/HER, and reporting their most recent progress.
Journal ArticleDOI

Ceria–Zirconia Solid Solutions (Ce1–xZrxO2−δ, x ≤ 0.2) for Solar Thermochemical Water Splitting: A Thermodynamic Study

TL;DR: In this paper, the redox behavior of ceria-zirconia solid solutions (or Zr-substituted ceria, ZSC) with a Zr content of up to 20 mol % was studied by thermogravimetry (TG) between 600 °C and 1490 °C under controlled atmospheres.
Journal ArticleDOI

Highly Enhanced Concentration and Stability of Reactive Ce3+ on Doped CeO2 Surface Revealed In Operando

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors employed ambient pressure X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and electrochemical impedance spectrographs to quantify simultaneously the concentration of the reactive trivalent cerium ions on the surface and in the bulk of Sm-doped CeO2(100) in hundreds of millitorr of H2-H2O gas mixtures.
