Journal ArticleDOI
The GPR54 gene as a regulator of puberty
Stephanie B. Seminara,Sophie Messager,Emmanouella E. Chatzidaki,Rosemary R. Thresher,James S. Acierno,Jenna K. Shagoury,Yousef Bo-Abbas,Wendy Kuohung,Kristine M. Schwinof,Alan G. Hendrick,Dirk Zahn,John Dixon,Ursula B. Kaiser,Susan A. Slaugenhaupt,James F. Gusella,Stephen O'Rahilly,Mark Carlton,William F. Crowley,Samuel Aparicio,William H. Colledge +19 more
TL;DR: Puberty is initiated when gonadotropin-releasing hormone begins to be secreted by the hypothalamus, and complementary genetic approaches in humans and mice identified genetic factors that determine the onset of puberty.
Journal ArticleDOI
The GPR54 Gene as a Regulator of Puberty
Stephanie B. Seminara,Sophie Messager,Emmanouella E. Chatzidaki,Rosemary R. Thresher,James S. Acierno,Jenna K. Shagoury,Yousef Bo-Abbas,Wendy Kuohung,Kristine M. Schwinof,Alan G. Hendrick,Dirk Zahn,John Dixon,Ursula B. Kaiser,Susan A. Slaugenhaupt,James F. Gusella,Stephen O'Rahilly,Mark Carlton,William F. Crowley,Samuel Aparicio,William H. Colledge +19 more
TL;DR: Mutations in GPR54, a G protein-coupled receptor gene, cause autosomal recessive idiopathic hypogonadotropic hypogOnadism in humans and mice, suggesting that this receptor is essential for normal gonadotropin-releasing hormone physiology and for puberty.

Long-term effects of a ketogenic diet in obese patients
Hussein M. Dashti,T.C. Mathew,Talib Hussein,Sami Asfar,Abdulla I. Behbahani,Mousa Khoursheed,H. Al-Sayer,Yousef Bo-Abbas,N.S. Al-Zaid +8 more
TL;DR: The present study shows the beneficial effects of a long-term ketogenic diet, which significantly reduced the body weight and body mass index of the patients and decreased the level of triglycerides, LDL cholesterol and blood glucose, and increased thelevel of HDL cholesterol.
Journal ArticleDOI
Neuroendocrine, gonadal, placental, and obstetric phenotypes in patients with IHH and mutations in the G-protein coupled receptor, GPR54.
TL;DR: Observations help to tease apart the neuroendocrine, gonadal, placental and obstetric phenotypes of patients bearing mutations in GPR54.
Journal ArticleDOI
Ketogenic diet modifies the risk factors of heart disease in obese patients.
Hussein M. Dashti,Yousef Bo-Abbas,Sami Asfar,T.C. Mathew,Talib Hussein,Abdulla I. Behbahani,Mousa Khoursheed,H. Al-Sayer,N.S. Al-Zaid +8 more
TL;DR: Investigation of the long-term effect of a ketogenic diet on the activation and modification of heart disease risk factors in obese patients found that elevated levels of triacylglycerols and low levels of HDL were associated with hyperinsulinemia.
