TL;DR: The design of the laser transmitter for the first Doppler wind lidar in space and its performance during the first year of the Aeolus mission is discussed, providing valuable insights for upcoming space lidar missions.
Abstract: Global acquisition of atmospheric wind profiles using a spaceborne direct-detection Doppler wind lidar is being accomplished following the launch of European Space Agency’s Aeolus mission. One key part of the instrument is a single-frequency, ultraviolet laser that emits nanosecond pulses into the atmosphere. High output energy and frequency stability ensure a sufficient signal-to-noise ratio of the backscatter return and an accurate determination of the Doppler frequency shift induced by the wind. This Letter discusses the design of the laser transmitter for the first Doppler wind lidar in space and its performance during the first year of the Aeolus mission, providing valuable insights for upcoming space lidar missions.

18 Dec 2006TL;DR: In this paper, a method for monitoring particle contamination in flowing hydraulic fluids comprises means for particle counting and particle sizing, which helps lowering the costs for A/C maintenance and increase the A/Cs availability since necessary service actions can be scheduled strategically.
Abstract: A device for monitoring particle contamination in flowing hydraulic fluids comprises means for particle counting and particle sizing. Further a method for monitoring particle contamination in flowing hydraulic fluids comprises the steps of determining (A, B) fluid flow velocity; counting of particles in the hydraulic fluid passing the light barrier (4) for a fixed period of time; obtaining particle size distribution by using a range of different trigger levels. The monitoring device is insertable into the A/C hydraulic system to enable an online-monitoring of the degradation of the fluid quality during normal flight operations or on the ground using the method according to the present invention. Further the inventive solution helps lowering the costs for A/C maintenance and increase the A/C availability since necessary service actions can be scheduled strategically.

24 Oct 2007TL;DR: In this paper, a thermoplastic, carbon-fiber reinforced tape can be pressed by means of a pressure roller on a variable surface contour of a laminating device.
Abstract: A device is disclosed for pressing a tape, in particular a thermoplastic, carbon-fiber reinforced tape, for a fiber/tow placement method. A portion of the tape can be pressed by means of a pressure roller on a variable surface contour of a laminating device. An elastomer coating for even pressing of the tape adheres to the circumference of the pressure roller with a material bond. This may provide the advantage that a permanent and reliable connection is created between the elastomer coating and the pressure roller, which furthermore can be easily produced.

TL;DR: In this paper, a semi-analytical model for the nonlinear analysis of simply supported, unstiffened laminated composite cylinders and cones using the Ritz method and the classical Laminated Plate Theory is proposed.
Abstract: A semi-analytical model for the non-linear analysis of simply supported, unstiffened laminated composite cylinders and cones using the Ritz method and the Classical Laminated Plate Theory is proposed A matrix notation is used to formulate the problem using Donnell׳s and Sanders׳ non-linear equations The approximation functions proposed are capable to simulate the elephant׳s foot effect, a common phenomenon and a common failure mode for cylindrical and conical structures under axial compression Axial, torsion and pressure loads can be applied individually or combined, and solutions for linear static, linear buckling and non-linear buckling analyses are presented and verified using a commercial finite element software The presented non-linear buckling analyses used perturbation loads to create the initial geometric imperfections, showing the capability of the method for arbitrary imperfection patterns The linear stiffness matrices are integrated analytically and for the conical structures an approximation is proposed to overcome the non-integrable expressions

21 Nov 2003TL;DR: The inventive fluid cooling system for an aircraft (30) comprises an air-cooled heat exchanger (40) through which said fluid passes and which is provided with air intake means (52) and air exhaust means (54) as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: The inventive fluid cooling system for an aircraft (30) comprises an air-cooled heat exchanger (40) through which said fluid passes and which is provided with air intake means (52) and air exhaust means (54). Said air-cooled heat exchanger (40) is placed in a reception area of the fairing (34) of a guiding rail of wing flaps (36) connected to a wing (32) of said aircraft. Said means (52) for air intake into the air-cooled heat exchanger (40) is connected to air intake means (42) crossing the external covering (46) of the fairing (34) and said air exhaust means (54) of the air-cooled heat exchanger (40) is connected to air exhaust means (44) which exits from said external covering (46) in such a way that the air outside the aircraft (30) passes through said air-cooled heat exchanger (40), thereby cooling said fluid.
