TL;DR: A killer system, formerly used for differentiating C. albicans isolates within the species, proved to be valid as epidemiological marker when applied to 112 strains of pathogenic yeasts.
Abstract: High sensitivity rates to the activity of killer toxins produced by 25 species of yeasts belonging to the genera Candida, Hansenula, Pichia, Rhodotorula, Saccharomyces and Trichosporon have been observed among 112 yeast isolates (25 Cryptococcus neoformans, 29 C. glabrata, 16 C. parapsilosis, 20 C. pseudotropicalis and 22 C. tropicalis). The highest sensitivity has been observed among the C. parapsilosis isolates, the lowest in C. glabrata strains. Genera Pichia and Hansenula proved to have the greatest killer activity. A killer system, formerly used for differentiating C. albicans isolates within the species, proved to be valid as epidemiological marker when applied to 112 strains of pathogenic yeasts.

TL;DR: Gross features and the presence of bile ducts, of thick-walled blood vessels and nerves, and, ultrastructurally, of myofibroblast-like cells are the most significant findings, suggesting that FLC is the malignant counterpart of focal nodular hyperplasia with oncocytic change.
Abstract: A case of fibrolamellar carcinoma (FLC) in a noncirrhotic liver of a 20-year-old man is described. Gross features and the presence, among the tumor cells, of bile ducts, of thick-walled blood vessels and nerves, and, ultrastructurally, of myofibroblast-like cells are the most significant findings, suggesting that FLC is the malignant counterpart of focal nodular hyperplasia with oncocytic change. Histochemical and immunohistochemical methods demonstrate the presence inside the oncocytic tumor cells of copper, copper-binding protein, and alpha 1 antitrypsin. The pathogenesis and the significance of these findings then are discussed and related to the restricted capacity of oncocytic cells to fulfill normal cellular function.

TL;DR: There are differences in the neural proteins found in neuroblastic tumours and a wide panel of antibodies against neural markers may be a useful tool in the histological assessment of nervous system neoplasms.
Abstract: The presence and distribution of different neural markers in 30 neuroblastic tumours (neuroblastomas, ganglioneuroblastomas) and 6 non-neuroblastic tumours were investigated by immunocytochemistry. Neuron-specific enolase (NSE), S-100 protein, tyrosine hydroxylase, neurofilaments and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) were localised in 3 undifferentiated neuroblastic tumours (group A), 12 poorly differentiated tumours (group B) and 15 well differentiated neuroblastic tumours (group C). Non-neuroblastic tumours (3 lymphomas and 3 Ewing sarcomas) showed no immunoreactivity. Tyrosine hydroxylase and, in particular, NSE were found in mature ganglion cells and developing neuroblasts of poorly and well differentiated tumours (groups B and C). S-100 was localised in neuroblasts with slender cytoplasmic processes in the same groups. Neurofilaments were detected in ganglion cells and differentiated neuroblasts (groups B and C) while GFAP was localised in immature neuroblasts of undifferentiated and poorly differentiated tumours (groups A and B). Thus, there are differences in the neural proteins found in neuroblastic tumours and a wide panel of antibodies against neural markers may be a useful tool in the histological assessment of nervous system neoplasms.

TL;DR: Investigation of the possible presence of interdigitating reticulum cells in the normal human thymus found immunolabelled IRC’s in the majority of spindle cell and in some round-oval cell thymomas could be relevant in the better comprehension of this thymic neoplasm.
Abstract: In the light of recent findings concerning the presence of S-100 antigen in interdigitating reticulum cells (IRC’s) in the normal human thymus, we investigated the possible presence of these cells in human thymomas. By the unlabelled antibody PAP method, using an anti-S-100 antiserum, both by light and electron microscopy we were able to demonstrate immunolabelled IRC’s in the majority of spindle cell and in some round-oval cell thymomas. Keeping in mind the possible role of IRC’s in intrathymic T-cell differentiation, the present findings could be relevant in the better comprehension of this thymic neoplasm.

TL;DR: The results of this study indicate that the retinoblastoma may arise from a pluripotential primitive cell partially retaining neuronal and glial characteristics.
Abstract: An immunocytochemical study of 30 retinoblastomas was carried out using antibodies to neuronal and glial markers. The tumours were found to react with antibodies to neuron-specific enolase (NSE), a marker for neuronal elements, and S-100 and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), both of which are proteins present in glia. Two distinct cell populations were found within the tumour: the first, composed of anaplastic tumour cells at various stages of differentiation, showed both NSE and S-100 immunoreactivity; the second cell type, which immunostained for S-100 and GFAP, resembled mature glial cells. The results of this study indicate that the retinoblastoma may arise from a pluripotential primitive cell partially retaining neuronal and glial characteristics.

TL;DR: The results indicate that the interhemispheric disconnection, whether acute or chronic, does not disrupt binocularity in areas 17 and 18; moreover, the analysis of the ocular dominance for binocular neurons did not reveal any imbalance between the inputs from the two eyes, since at all levels of eccentricity the majority of binocular neuron was equally activated by both eyes.

TL;DR: The reliability of stereotactic biopsy seems related to the modality of its planning and execution and to the experience of the neuropathologist.
Abstract: The reliability of the informations provided by stereotactic biopsy of expanding cerebral lesions was analyzed. Out of 68 patients, studied with stereotactic biopsy, 14 were subsequently submitted to surgery and 5 to autopsy. In 18 cases there was a perfect correspondence between the diagnosis based on biopsy and that based on surgery or autopsy. In one case the tumor was missed at biopsy. The reliability of stereotactic biopsy seems related to the modality of its planning and execution and to the experience of the neuropathologist.

TL;DR: The authors present a case of multiple brain metastases and an extracranial secondary localization from malignant melanoma and a patient was operated on three times for the intracranial masses and had a 49-month survival with a good quality of life.
Abstract: The authors present a case of multiple brain metastases and an extracranial secondary localization from malignant melanoma. The patient was operated on three times for the intracranial masses and had a 49-month survival with a good quality of life after the first of the three operations. She lived a total of 80 months from the time of diffusion of the primary tumor. The course of malignant melanoma is unpredictable, and long-term survival can be achieved in some cases, even in the presence of multiple brain metastases.

TL;DR: A patient who suffered two successive, right and left, strokes that caused bilateral rolandic operculum damage was characterized by selective impairment of volitional facio-pharyngo-glosso-masticatory movements with sparing of automatic and reflex motor activity (Foix-Chavany-Marie syndrome).
Abstract: The authors describe a patient who suffered two successive, right and left, strokes that caused bilateral rolandic operculum damage. The clinical picture was characterized by selective impairment of volitional facio-pharyngo-glosso-masticatory movements with sparing of automatic and reflex motor activity (Foix-Chavany-Marie syndrome). Though completely speechless, the patient was not aphasic. This dissociation is discussed in the light of the peculiar localization of lesions evidenced by CT-scan.

TL;DR: A hitherto undescribed sign, sensorineural deafness, is noted in the FG syndrome and is likely to represent more than a chance occurrence, given its presence also in the Townes-Brocks syndrome.
Abstract: We report on four new cases of FG syndrome with typical manifestations of this X-linked inherited condition and note a hitherto undescribed sign, sensorineural deafness. The association between sensorineural deafness and imperforate anus is likely to represent more than a chance occurrence, given its presence also in the Townes-Brocks syndrome.

TL;DR: A normal ultrasound pattern of thegallbladder was progressively restored during the clinical recovery in most of the patients and a statistical correlation was found between the gallbladder wall thickness and the alanine transferase index.
Abstract: Ultrasound was used for a serial evaluation of gallbladder modifications in 61 patients with acute viral hepatitis during both the acute phase of the illness and recovery. Most of the patients studied within 7 days from the onset of symptoms and/or jaundice showed sonographic abnormalities of the gallbladder (increased wall thickness, reduced volume, abnormal bile content). A normal ultrasound pattern of the gallbladder was progressively restored during the clinical recovery in most of the patients. A statistical correlation was found between the gallbladder wall thickness and the alanine transferase index.

TL;DR: A method for protoplast formation and regeneration suitable for Lactobacillus reuteri strains was developed, and production and regeneration of protoplasts promoted the loss of plasmids harboured by the strains.
Abstract: A method for protoplast formation and regeneration suitable for Lactobacillus reuteri strains was developed. Lysozyme-treated cells formed protoplasts at a high percentage and regenerative ability varied according to the strains considered. Moreover, production and regeneration of protoplasts promoted the loss of plasmids harboured by the strains.

TL;DR: A case of ankylosing spondylitis with aortic valve disease and hearing loss and it seemed most likely that the hearing loss was related to an inflammatory involvement of the ossicular joints due to the primary disease.
Abstract: A case of ankylosing spondylitis with aortic valve disease and hearing loss is described. A series of radiographic and audiometric investigations showed the hearing loss to be of a conductive type. It seemed most likely that the hearing loss was related to an inflammatory involvement of the ossicular joints due to the primary disease. No other case of conductive hearing loss has previously been reported due to otoarthritis in ankylosing spondylitis. This is important both theoretically and practically.

TL;DR: Hg exposure increased cardiac inotropism, without chronotropic changes, in both groups, and induced arterial hypertension in the rats exposed for 350 days, while Hg exposure induced baroreflex hyposensitivity and produced a drastic alteration of the levels of copper and zinc in brain and kidney.
Abstract: Two groups of male Sprague-Dawley rats received from weaning 50 μg/ml of mercury as mercuric chloride (HgCl2) in drinking water for 320 and 350 days. Hg exposure increased cardiac inotropism, without chronotropic changes, in both groups, and induced arterial hypertension in the rats exposed for 350 days. In the exposed rats, cardiovascular responses to the stimulation of peripheral alpha and beta adrenoceptors were decreased and increased, respectively, possibly through a reduced intracellular availability of calcium ions for contractile mechanisms. Hg exposure did not affect either vagal or sympathetic activity or cardiovascular reactivity to several physiological agonists. On the other hand, Hg exposure induced baroreflex hyposensitivity and produced a drastic alteration of the levels of copper and zinc in brain and kidney.

TL;DR: It is hypothesized that fertile triplo-X individuals have chromosomally normal oogonia due to mitotic nondisjunction in a cell from which the primordial germ line took origin to explain the low incidence of gonosomal aneuploidy among the offspring.
Abstract: A review of the reproductive performance of 47,XXX individuals showed that the incidence of gonosomal aneuploidy among the offspring is low. To explain this unexpected phenomenon it is hypothesized that fertile triplo-X individuals have chromosomally normal oogonia due to mitotic nondisjunction in a cell from which the primordial germ line took origin. Mosaic 46,XX/47,XXX individuals have a somewhat higher risk of bearing aneuploid offspring, possibly due to a constitutional tendency toward gonosomal nondisjunction.

TL;DR: The therapeutic response for analgesic effect has been evaluated in complete response when total disappearance of pain was present; in partial response (PR) with the reduction of at least 1 point on the Keele Scale; in non‐responsive (NR) when patients showed worsening or no change in pain symptomatology during or following therapy.
Abstract: Seventy-nine patients with osseous metastases were prospectively evaluated for bone pain. The evaluation of pain has been accomplished using the Keele Scale system. All cases have been treated with radiotherapy. The therapeutic response for analgesic effect has been evaluated in complete response (CR) when total disappearance of pain was present; in partial response (PR) with the reduction of at least 1 point on the Keele Scale; in non-responsive (NR) when patients showed worsening or no change in pain symptomatology during or following therapy. 51.8% have presented complete response, 36.8% partial response and 11.3% no response. The global response (CR + PR) has been 88.6%. This response was evaluated in relation to fractionating daily dose of radiotherapy and minimum dose necessary for analgesia.
