TL;DR: It is concluded that barbless stent tubes show promise in the management of dysphagia caused by esophageal strictures.
Abstract: To overcome the drawbacks of the modified Gianturco stent tube with barbs, a new barbless stent tube was constructed. Twenty-two barbless stent tubes 4.5-14.0 cm long were placed with a new introducing tube in 21 patients: 10 stent tubes in 10 patients with recurrent dysphagia after radiation therapy or chemotherapy, 10 in 10 patients with esophageal cancer in whom surgical management was contraindicated, and two in one patient with postoperative benign stricture. No technical failure or procedural complications occurred. After the procedure, all but two patients could ingest most or all foods. In two patients with an esophagorespiratory fistula and one patient with esophageal rupture, the barbless stent tube successfully occluded the fistula and rupture site. The stent tube migrated in one patient. Fifteen patients are surviving, with the stent tubes patent for 3-35 weeks (mean patency, 13 weeks); the six other patients died 7-24 weeks (mean, 16 weeks) after stent placement. It is concluded that barbless...

TL;DR: Conclusively, the anti-apoptotic effect of caspase inhibitor on PG-induced Calu-6 cell death was closely related to changes in GSH content rather than ROS levels.
Abstract: Pyrogallol (PG) is a polyphenol compound and is known to be an O2.- generator. In the present study, we evaluated the anti-apoptotic effects of caspase inhibitors in relation to changes in reactive oxygen species (ROS) and glutathione (GSH) levels in PG-treated human pulmonary adenocarcinoma Calu-6 cells. Treatment with 50 microM PG inhibited the growth of Calu-6 cells approximately 60% and induced apoptosis approximately 17% at 24 h, accompanied by mitochondrial membrane potential loss (DeltaPsim). Treatment with pan-caspase inhibitor (Z-VAD-FMK), caspase-3 inhibitor (Z-DEVD-FMK), caspase-8 inhibitor (Z-IETD-FMK) and caspase-9 inhibitor (Z-LEHD-FMK) significantly prevented apoptosis in PG-treated Calu-6 cells at 24 h. PG increased the ROS and depleted GSH contents in Calu-6 cells. Treatment with each caspase inhibitor did not significantly change the ROS and GSH levels in PG-treated Calu-6 cells at 24 h. However, Z-VAD significantly prevented GSH depletion in PG-treated Calu-6 cells at the late time phase of 72 h. Conclusively, the anti-apoptotic effect of caspase inhibitor on PG-induced Calu-6 cell death was closely related to changes in GSH content rather than ROS levels.

TL;DR: Balloon dilation in corrosive esophageal strictures is effective, but the high rupture rate indicates the need for extra caution.
Abstract: The safety and long-term effectiveness of fluoroscopically guided balloon dilation for corrosive esophageal stricture was evaluated in 22 patients with a follow-up period of more than 1 year (range, 13-52 months). The average interval between corrosive agent ingestion and initial balloon dilation was 18 years (range, 2 months to 51 years). Balloons with a diameter of 5-8 mm were used in the initial attempt. The caliber of the balloon catheter was increased gradually over subsequent dilations, up to a diameter that allowed patients to swallow solid foods. Dilation of more than 17 mm in diameter was performed in five patients. Patients underwent one to five sessions. Esophageal rupture occurred in seven patients and was treated nonoperatively in five and surgically in two. With exclusion of these latter two, 11 of 20 could tolerate swallowing all kinds of food and nine could tolerate swallowing most foods. Balloon dilation in corrosive esophageal strictures is effective, but the high rupture rate indicates the need for extra caution.

TL;DR: The Cooley-Tukey FFT as discussed by the authors algorithm is based on the version of the Goertzel algorithm via Horner's rule, which is suitable for vector processors and any parallel machine such as hypercube.
Abstract: An efficient algorithm that places an optimized DG (dependence graph) for 2/sup n/ points of the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) computation is proposed. A one-dimensional DFT is turned into a multidimensional DFT, consisting of a few short DFTs, which is based on the version of the Goertzel algorithm via Horner's rule. The data sequences in the Cooley-Tukey FFT algorithm are in an order that is easily manageable and well suited for vector processors and any parallel machine such as hypercube. >

TL;DR: In this paper, a powder of single PMN phase was obtained by calcination of as-pyrolyzed powders at 750°C by the carrier gas of the composition N2:O2=4:1.
Abstract: Lead nitrate, magnesium nitrate and niobium oxalate as raw materials were chosen and dissolved into distilled water with nitric acid. The mixed solution was sprayed with an ultrasonic atomizer and transported into an electric furnace heated at 750°C by the carrier gas of the composition N2:O2=4:1. The powder, the pyrolysis product, was collected in a filter paper by pumping. The obtained powders consist mainly of pyrochlore and a little PMN. A powder of single PMN phase was obtained by calcination of as-pyrolyzed powders at 750°C. The particles had spherical shape with a narrow size distribution and an average size of 0.36μm.

Abstract: A patient with a sciatic artery aneurysm, which is so rare that only 31 cases have been reported in the literature to date, was treated successfully with transcatheter arterial embolization (TAE) alone. Potentially risky and difficult surgery was avoided. This was the first trial with a good result. TAE alone is simple, safe and effective method for the treatment of sciatic artery aneurysm either in incomplete type or in complete type with adequate collateralization.

Abstract: Middle Carboniferous to Early Triassic paleomagnetic directions from Northeast Okchon Fold Belt of South Korea have been obtained and used to calculate the paleopoles of South Korea. Many samples collected are strongly overprinted by the Brunhes normal magnetic field, but thermal demagnetization has been successful in isolating ancient, dualpolarity characteristic directions of magnetization, with results passing reversal and fold tests. An Early Triassic direction (D=76.8°/I=37.2°, α95=8.9°, k=29.3, Nchr=18), a Late Permian direction (D=258.0°/I=12.2°, α95=16.4°, k=14.4, Nchr=7), and a Middle Carboniferous direction (D=100.5°/I=-22.5°, α95=13.0°, k=17, Nchr=18) have been obtained from the Northeast Okchon Fold Belt of South Korea.Southern Korea and South China Block (SCB) yield Jurassic and younger paleopoles that are to first approximation similar, but on the other hand Carboniferous-Triassic Apparent Polar Wander Path is different from that of SCB. Inclinations and declinations calculated from these two paths for the Korean reference site are significantly different in the Carboniferous-Triassic. It is, therefore, insisted that the southern part of Korean Peninsula and SCB were different tectonic masses before the Jurassic.

TL;DR: In this article, high pressure Raman spectra of fullerite, a solid form of C 60, were measured at pressures up to a 4 GPa and room temperature and the phase transition was observed to be irreversible.
Abstract: High-pressure Raman spectra of fullerite, a solid form of C 60 , were measured at pressures up to a 4 GPa and room temperature. A change of slope (dv/dP) of the frequency-pressure plots for the A g pentagonal pinch mode and the A g breathing mode was observed at 1.3 GPa, where a solid-solid phase transition might occur. The phase transition was observed to be irreversible. The pressure dependence of the Raman mode frequency and the phase transition are discussed in terms of an orientational ordering transition in fullerite

TL;DR: This procedure can be performed at the same time as percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage with low morbidity or mortality, and although the potential for perforation of bile ducts and injury to adjacent blood vessels is considered it is a useful addition to existing biopsy techniques for yielding material sufficient for histologic analysis.
Abstract: To obtain a histopathologic diagnosis at the site of a biliary obstruction, we recently have performed 24 cases of biliary biopsy using gastrofiberscopic biopsy forceps (Olympus, Tokyo, Japan) via transhepatic tracts provided in the course of the procedure of percutaneous biliary drainage. Histopathologic diagnosis was successfully made at the first attempt of biopsy procedure but a second trial was made a week later in 6 cases who were negative for malignant cells on the first attempt. The histological results from the biopsy specimens were 18 adenocarcinomas, 5 chronic inflammations and one normal epithelium. Of 6 cases who were negative for malignant cells on forceps biopsy specimen, three cases were confirmed as adenocarcinoma of the ampulla of Vater, adenocarcinoma of the pancreas and chronic pancreatitis by surgical biopsy. The latter was a true negative result, which was diagnosed as chronic inflammation on forceps biopsy and verified as chronic pancreatitis by surgery. The remaining two cases were diagnosed as malignant obstructive jaundice by clinical and radiological follow-up findings. Major complications (bile peritonitis, bleeding, and hemopneumothorax) occurred in 3 patients, which mainly arose in the earlier period of study. This procedure can be performed at the same time as percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage with low morbidity or mortality, and although the potential for perforation of bile ducts and injury to adjacent blood vessels is considered it is a useful addition to existing biopsy techniques for yielding material sufficient for histologic analysis.

TL;DR: It is suggested that soluble merozoite T. sergenti antigens may be potential vaccine candidates for developing a genetic vaccine in Korea after significantly more vaccinated cattle maintained normal ranges of hematological and biochemical values as compared with the control group.
Abstract: A Theileria sergenti soluble merozoite preparation containing the 29, 34, 35 and 105 KD as the immunodominant polypeptides, was evaluated for efficacy, safety and protectivity in Holstein calves against virulent field tick challenge. The soluble antigens (100 mg/dose) were fortified with either complete or incomplete Freund's adjuvant. Twenty naive calves, aged one month, were subcutaneously inoculated with the preparation and a booster dose was administered 4 weeks later. Twenty additional calves served as controls. Five weeks after the booster dose, vaccinates and uninoculated controls were moved to a pasture, a heavily tick infested area in Cheju-do, Korea. The vaccinates showed negligible change in hematocrit and total RBC count whereas control animals showed significant (p < 0.05) hematological changes and associated anemia. Only 30% of vaccinates required chemotherapy after the experiment was terminated. All control animals required chemotherapy and 25% received blood transfusion. The highest percent parasitized erythrocytes in vaccinated cattle was 0.4% as compared with 3.6% among controls during the month of July. A significant difference (p < 0.05) was observed in the rate of body weight increase. Significant differences were also noted in serum albumin, aspartate aminotransferase, total protein and bilirubin. Significantly more vaccinated cattle maintained normal ranges of hematological and biochemical values as compared with the control group. It is suggested that soluble merozoite T. sergenti antigens may be potential vaccine candidates for developing a genetic vaccine in Korea.

TL;DR: After vaccination and challenge, the antibody responses demonstrated that vaccination had induced significant production of antibody to the 29 and 35 kD polypeptides, which was much more strongly recognized by the vaccinated animals, and thus it may be a potential candidate for the vaccine.
Abstract: Theileria sergenti were isolated from infected erythrocytes by hypotonic lysis, and soluble merozoite antigens were purified by sonication and differential centrifugation. The preparation contained 29, 34, 35 and 105 kD immuno-dominant poly-peptides. The soluble antigens (0.5 mg/ml) were prepared and fortified with Freund's adjuvant. Five month old naive Korean calves were subcutaneously inoculated with the preparation and a booster dose was administered 4 weeks later. Nine weeks after the booster dose, vaccinates and controls were challenged with a homologous stabilate (5.6 x 10(6) RBC/dose, 40% Parasitemia). All animals were monitored for hematocrit, total erythrocyte count, parasitemia and for the specific antibody by Western immunoblot (WB) and indirect immuno-fluorescent antibody (IFA) test. By 18 weeks after vaccination (6 weeks after the challenge), vaccinated cattle had an average IFA titer of 1:10,240 compared with 1:1,280 of the controls. The vaccinates showed negligible change in hematocrit and total RBC count whereas control animals showed significant (p less than 0.05) hematological changes and associated anemia. After vaccination and challenge, the antibody responses demonstrated that vaccination had induced significant production of antibody to the 29 and 35 kD polypeptides. The latter polypeptide was much more strongly recognized by the vaccinated animals, and thus it may be a potential candidate for the vaccine.

Abstract: High Tc YbBaCuO film(Tc,0 gt 80K) was successfully prepared on various substrates by CVD method using molecular oxygen as an oxidant. The deposited 123 phase showed c-axis oriented structure with a large c-axis lattice parameter with c = 11.706 ~ 11.826A. It was observed that the formation of 123 phase accompanied 132 phase as well as BaCuO and CuO. It is very noticeable that Yb2O3 was also deposited with 123 phase in YbBaCuO system.

TL;DR: In this paper, the rollover burr is dealt as a specific case of the chip formation process in the final stage of cut, which the tool moves toward the end of workpiece.
Abstract: The initiation of burr formation is characterized by the initial negative shear angle and the initial tool distance which are obtained from the minimum energy principle and energy conservation at the chip/burr transition point. Specially in this report the rollover burr is dealt as a specific case of the chip formation process in the final stage of cut, which the tool moves toward the end of workpiece. The purpose of this paper is to experimentally invesigate the burr formation mechanism near the end of cut by using a copper with various cutting conditions and tool geometries, and the influence of the surface active medium, that was used to reduce the burr size and improve the machinability, upon the mechanism of burr formation in the orthogonal cutting using the milling machine.

Abstract: Two fully matured specimens were collected from the blood vessel of two fish, Theragra chalcogramma, which was bought at the Emun market of Seoul in May, 1985. The blood fluke has no pharynx and suckers. Its body surface was covered with minute spines forming fan-shaped groups, 15 microns long. The intestine was H-shaped, and the ratio of esophageal length to body length was 1:6.1-6.8. Irregular shaped testes were 109-114 in number, occupying the intercecal space from cecal bifurcation to the genital pore. The present species was identified as Aporocotyle theragrae. This is the first report of the species in Korea.

TL;DR: In this paper, a fracture strength of microstructure at any localized region of interest on HAZ, weld metal and parent material in two steels was evaluated by using ductile-brittle transition temperature (DBTT) or ΔDBTT obtained from the small punch (SP) test technique to weldments.
Abstract: It has been well known that the ductile-brittle transition temperature (DBTT) of each weld structure or its shift (ΔDBTT) from parent material is one of the very useful measures of the fracture characteristics in steel weldment. In order to present an applicability of small punch (SP) test technique to weldments, in this study, a fracture strength of microstructure at any localized region of interest on HAZ, weld metal and parent material in two steels was evaluated by using DBTT or ΔDBTT obtained from the SP test in relation to the data obtained from the COD test. The empirical correlation, (ΔDBTT) SP ⋟0.55 (ΔDBTT) COD , was obtained from the SP and COD test. In addition, the effects of test materials, that is the microstructures of welded region and the orientations of specimens etc, did not appear at the empirical correlation.
