TL;DR: In this paper, three critical success factors in online delivery are identified: technology, the instructor and the previous use of the technology from a student's perspective, and they also argue that the lecturer will continue to play a central role in online education, albeit his or her role will become one of a learning catalyst and knowledge navigator.
Abstract: The Internet is a major technological advancement reshaping not only our society but also that of universities worldwide. In light of this, universities have to capitalise on the Internet for teaching, and one progressive development of this is the use of online delivery methods. This paper draws upon the results of a survey conducted amongst students enrolled in one online management course at an Australian university. Three critical success factors in online delivery are identified: technology, the instructor and the previous use of the technology from a student’s perspective. We also argue that the lecturer will continue to play a central role in online education, albeit his or her role will become one of a learning catalyst and knowledge navigator.

TL;DR: In this article, the influence of awareness, purchase and dream values of luxury brands on two counts was studied in Singapore and it was shown that increasing awareness yields higher levels of brand preference, which generates stronger purchase intentions.
Abstract: This paper extends work on the influence of awareness, purchase and dream values of luxury brands on two counts. First, it introduces a measure on consumers' ‘dislike’ for certain luxury brands of high awareness. The justification is consumers may be aware of a well-known brand but need not necessarily like it. Second, the Rarity Principle suggests that in order to maintain prestige, luxury brands must sustain high levels of awareness and tightly controlled brand diffusion to enhance exclusivity. This study in Singapore supports the notion that Asian consumers hold different perceptions in the ownership of luxury brands compared to the West. The findings show that the popularity of a brand may propel the dream value of the brand. Increasing awareness yields higher levels of brand preference, which generates stronger purchase intentions. This clearly rejects the Rarity Principle, which exists in the USA findings. Therefore, in order for luxury brands to be successful, they have to be promoted through active-marketing communication. The focus must be on strengthening the brand image and delivering benefits that the brands could provide.

TL;DR: Three Grenville-age provinces can be distinguished in East Antarctica with U-Pb zircon data as discussed by the authors, and these crustal segments represent three separate collisional orogens.
Abstract: Three Grenville-age provinces can be distinguished in East Antarctica with U-Pb zircon data. The Maud, Rayner, and Wilkes provinces each have a distinctive age signature for late Mesoproterozoic–early Neoproterozoic magmatism and high-grade metamorphism and are correlated with similar rocks in the Namaqua-Natal (Africa), Eastern Ghats (India), and Albany-Fraser (Australia) provinces, respectively. These crustal segments represent three separate collisional orogens. They are separated by regions of intense late Neoproterozoic–Early Cambrian tectonism, consistent with their juxtaposition during the final assembly of Gondwana and indicating that previous models for a single, continuous, Grenville-age mobile belt around the East Antarctic coastline should be discarded.

TL;DR: For example, this article found that students who were encouraged to use multiple particle models displayed more scientific understandings of particles and their interactions than did students who concentrated on a correct or best analogical model.
Abstract: Analogical models are frequently used to explain science concepts at all levels of science teaching and learning. But models are more than communicative tools: they are important links in the methods and products of science. Different analogical models are regularly used to teach science in secondary schools even though little is known about how each student's mental models interact with the various models presented by teachers and in textbooks. Mounting evidence suggests that students do not interpret scientific analogical models in the way intended, nor do they find multiple and competing models easy to understand. The aim of this study is summarized in the research question: How can students' understanding of the multiple models used to explain upper secondary chemistry concepts be enhanced? This study qualitatively tracked ten students' modeling experiences, intellectual development, and conceptual status throughout grade 11 as they learned about atoms, molecules, and chemical bonds. This article reports in detail a year-long case study. The outcomes suggest that students who socially negotiated the shared and unshared attributes of common analogical models for atoms, molecules, and chemical bonds, used these models more consistently in their explanations. Also, students who were encouraged to use multiple particle models displayed more scientific understandings of particles and their interactions than did students who concentrated on a “correct” or best analogical model. The results suggest that, when analogical models are presented in a systematic way and capable students are given ample opportunity to explore model meaning and use, their understanding of abstract concepts is enhanced. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. TL;DR: Based on notions of vicarious trauma, burnout, and countertransference, the purpose of as mentioned in this paper was to explore the impact on counselors of working with domestic violence (DV) clients.
Abstract: Based on notions of vicarious trauma, burnout, and countertransference, the purpose of this study was to explore the impact on counselors of working with domestic violence (DV) clients. Eighteen counselors with high case loads of DV clients participated in a semistructured interview. They described classical symptoms of vicarious trauma, and reported changes in cognitive schema, particularly in regard to safety, world view, and gender power issues. Specific challenges of DV work included changes in counseling practice to meet the unique needs of DV clients, difficulties with confidentiality, fear for clients' safety, feelings of isolation, and powerlessness. The majority reported symptoms of burnout, but used a range of strategies for dealing with their adverse effects including monitoring client caseloads, debriefing, peer support, self care and political involvement. The implications of these findings for the training of DV counselors are discussed as are recommendations for best practice in DV counseli...

TL;DR: In this article, a conceptual model known as the internal service quality model was designed based on the original GAP Model, which evaluated the dimensions, and their relationships, that determine service quality among internal customers (frontline staff) and internal suppliers (support staff) within a large service organisation, namely, Singapore Airlines.
Abstract: Explores the extent to which the construct service quality plays in an internal marketing setting. A conceptual model known as the “Internal Service Quality Model” was designed based on the original “GAP Model” developed by Parasuraman. The model evaluated the dimensions, and their relationships, that determine service quality among internal customers (front‐line staff) and internal suppliers (support staff) within a large service organisation, namely, Singapore Airlines. The dependent variable in this study was internal service quality (ISQ), while the independent variables were tangibility, reliability, responsiveness, assurance, and empathy. The results suggest that the perceptions and expectations of internal customers and internal suppliers play a major role in recognising the level of internal service quality perceived. The acceptance of the postulated hypotheses has confirmed the importance of the internal service quality construct, thus acknowledging the usefulness of the INTSERVQUAL instrument and the conceptualised Internal Service Quality Model proposed in this research study.

TL;DR: It is shown that, during landing, the bee decelerates continuously and in such a way as to keep the projected time to touchdown constant as the surface is approached, which reflects a surprisingly simple and effective strategy for achieving a smooth landing.
Abstract: Freely flying bees were filmed as they landed on a flat, horizontal surface, to investigate the underlying visuomotor control strategies. The results reveal that (1) landing bees approach the surface at a relatively shallow descent angle; (2) they tend to hold the angular velocity of the image of the surface constant as they approach it; and (3) the instantaneous speed of descent is proportional to the instantaneous forward speed. These characteristics reflect a surprisingly simple and effective strategy for achieving a smooth landing, by which the forward and descent speeds are automatically reduced as the surface is approached and are both close to zero at touchdown. No explicit knowledge of flight speed or height above the ground is necessary. A model of the control scheme is developed and its predictions are verified. It is also shown that, during landing, the bee decelerates continuously and in such a way as to keep the projected time to touchdown constant as the surface is approached. The feasibility of this landing strategy is demonstrated by implementation in a robotic gantry equipped with vision.

TL;DR: In this paper, a cross-cultural study of junior high school science classes in Australia and Taiwan is presented. But the authors focus on what is happening in this class? (WIHIC) questionnaire.
Abstract: This research is distinctive in that it not only provides an example of one of the few cross-cultural studies in science education, but also it used multiple research methods from different paradigms in exploring classroom learning environments in Taiwan and Australia. This article describes the validation and use of an English and Mandarin version of the What is Happening in this Class? (WIHIC) questionnaire in junior high school science classes in Australia and Taiwan. When the WIHIC was administered to 1,081 students in 50 classes in Australia and to 1,879 students in 50 classes in Taiwan, data analysis supported the reliability and factorial validity of the questionnaire, and revealed differences between Taiwanese and Australian classrooms. Although the study commenced from a more positivistic framework, favouring a more objectivist view, as the study progressed, it employed an interpretative framework and drew on elements of constructivist and critical theory paradigms. This article outlines the researchers' use of multiple research methods including classroom observations, in-depth interviews and narratives. The themes which emerged from the data gathered using these methods helped to make sense of classroom environments that were created in each country.

TL;DR: An approach automatically to classify and evaluate publicly accessible World Wide Web sites and a multi‐methodological approach is chosen that comprises statistical clustering, textual analysis, supervised and non‐supervised neural networks and manual classification for validation purposes.
Abstract: Describes an approach automatically to classify and evaluate publicly accessible World Wide Web sites. The suggested methodology is equally valuable for analyzing content and hypertext structures of commercial, educational and non‐profit organizations. Outlines a research methodology for model building and validation and defines the most relevant attributes of such a process. A set of operational criteria for classifying Web sites is developed. The introduced software tool supports the automated gathering of these parameters, and thereby assures the necessary “critical mass” of empirical data. Based on the preprocessed information, a multi‐methodological approach is chosen that comprises statistical clustering, textual analysis, supervised and non‐supervised neural networks and manual classification for validation purposes.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors focus on facilitating recovery and growth in professionals for whom disaster work and its consequences is an occupational reality, and discuss resilience and vulnerability at dispositional, cognitive and organisational levels.
Abstract: The assumption of an automatic link between disaster exposure and pathological outcomes is increasingly being questioned. Recognition of the possibility of positive reactions and growth outcomes in this context necessitates the development of alternative models and, in particular, the accommodation of the resilience construct in research and intervention agenda. Reviews possible vulnerability and resilience factors and adopts a risk management framework to outline its potential for modelling the complex relationships between these variables and both growth and distress outcomes. Resilience and vulnerability is discussed at dispositional, cognitive and organisational levels. The paradigm developed here focuses attention on facilitating recovery and growth in professionals for whom disaster work and its consequences is an occupational reality.

TL;DR: In this article, a business school has identified a set of generic skills to be taught to all undergraduate students and begun implementing a project to teach and assess the skills in the context of each discipline.
Abstract: Feedback from employers of graduates indicates a need to include a focus on generic skills to complement disciplinary expertise. Educational research shows that such skills are most effectively taught in the disciplinary context. Therefore, in order to better meet the requirements of employers for graduates who are more 'fit for purpose', universities may need to change the curriculum and how it is taught. Such changes involve significant investment in staff development and monitoring of the change process. Measures of effectiveness of changes must be developed and used to improve graduate quality. This paper describes how a business school has identified a set of generic skills to be taught to all undergraduate students and begun implementing a project to teach and assess the skills in the context of each discipline. The measures of effectiveness that were developed are outlined and lessons learned to date in efforts to improve educational quality are discussed.

TL;DR: The paper outlines the extent to which this concept of compassion has implications for nursing care, highlighting some of the obstacles that nurses need to overcome in order to maintain this essential moral value of the caring role.
Abstract: Compassionate care: a moral dimension of nursing This paper focuses on the concept of compassion and its meaning for nursing practice. Compassion is often considered to be an essential component of nursing care; however, it is difficult to identify what exactly comprises compassionate care. To begin with, there is a general discussion of the meaning of compassion and an examination of its common usage. An argument then is presented that compassion is more than just a natural response to suffering, rather that it is a moral choice. The paper outlines the extent to which this concept has implications for nursing care, highlighting some of the obstacles that nurses need to overcome in order to maintain this essential moral value of the caring role.

TL;DR: Using data from regular grid DEMs, a method is described in this paper for calculating the cumulative downhill slope length, and methods for calculating slope angle and downhill direction (aspect) are defined.
Abstract: The Universal Soil Loss Equation has been used for a number of years to estimate soil erosion. One of its parameters is slope length, however, slope length has traditionally been estimated for large areas rather than calculated. Using data from regular grid DEMs, a method is described in this paper for calculating the cumulative downhill slope length. In addition, methods for calculating slope angle and downhill direction (aspect) are defined. Details of the algorithm and its associated advantages and disadvantages are discussed.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors describe a new vision for leadership and the development of organizations which integrates emerging perspectives from the fields of science, transpersonal psychology, eastern philosophy and management.
Abstract: Many recent authors have suggested it is time to move beyond the scientific, materialistic paradigm of the twentieth century toward a more holistic and spiritual view for the workplace of the twenty‐first century. The purpose of this article is to describe a new vision for leadership and the development of organizations which integrates emerging perspectives from the fields of science, transpersonal psychology, eastern philosophy and management. Spirituality is seen as important in helping human beings experience the fundamental meaning and purpose of their work. It is defined and described as distinctly different from organized religion. Practical examples are given of leaders and organizations that are facilitating spirituality in the workplace.
