Abstract: A program, called ELANAL, has been written in basic which computes all possible empirical formulae for a molecular ion or a fragment ion containing up to eleven common elements. The program then calculates the expected intensities of the peaks following the molecular or fragment ion due to heavier isotopes in the formulae. These calculated intensities are compared with the intensities in an experimentally determined mass spectrum.

Abstract: Topographic Rossby waves are long-period waves which occur on continental slopes. In this paper we examine the effect of a mean current on these waves, when the current is directed along the isobaths and has a linear shear in the transverse direction. Solutions are obtained in terms of Whittaker functions and are applied to some data analyzed by Hamon et al. (1975), which has been interpreted as evidence of topographic Rossby waves by Garrett (1979). The modifications due to a linear friction law are also considered.

Abstract: Studies by Barron and Henderson (1977) and Johnson (1975) provide evidence that whole words may be the unit of identification in word perception, rather than single letters. Johnson found that words were matched faster than a letter to the first letter in a word. Barron and Henderson found faster matching times for words than for legal non-word items in a letter-matching task. These findings support the interpretation that words are identified before individual letters. If so, a word-frequency effect should be expected. Experiments 1 and 2 tested for word vs. first-letter-in-word differences, as well as for a word-frequency effect in simultaneous and delayed visual matching tasks. In the simultaneous task, first letters in words were matched faster than words. In the delayed task, there was no difference between matching words or matching the first letters in words. With both tasks there was a word-frequency effect for word matches but not for first-letter-in-word matches. In Experiment 3, first-letter matching time was unrelated to word frequency or lexical status, although it did vary with orthographic legality. These results, on the whole, are consistent with a race model in which identifications take place simultaneously at word, letter-cluster, and letter levels, rather than a sequential model in which the whole word is identified before the component letters.

One-millilitre or 2-mL syringes which are divided into one tenths or one twentieths (Figure 6) require only simple multiplications to assess the dosage in units. Patients using U-40 insulin multiply the number of marks by four, while those using U-80 insulin multiply by eight. Therefore, the patient receiving six marks of U-40 insulin receives a dosage of 24 units, while 12 marks of U-80 gives 96 units of insulin.

Abstract: Administration of synthetic steroids with biological properties similar to those of the naturally occurring female sex hormones is one of the world’s most widely used methods of family planning. Such steroids may be administered as oral contraceptives (Briggs, 1977), or as long-acting depot injections or implants (Benagiano, 1977). They have also been released from vaginal rings (Mishell & Lumkin, 1970) or intrauterine devices (Rowe, 1977). Experimental routes of administration include intra-nasal spray (World Health Organization, 1979) and release from intracervical devices (World Health Organization, 1977).

Abstract: The ‘raison d’etre’ of this chapter is to consider the actual and possible contribution of developmental psychology to the resolution of educational issues and, in particular, the problem of divining the nature of educational competence. As this represents the theme for a tome rather than a chapter a well-defined and delimited structure is required to render it manageable. The approach adopted will involve a consideration of two lines of research concerned with ‘competence’. It will be argued that the current situation in both indicates the desirability of the same research strategy in developmental psychology if progress is to be made towards the understanding of educational competence. The reasons that this strategy has not been characteristic of developmental psychological research to date will be discussed and the chapter will conclude with a consideration of aspects of ongoing research which suggest trends towards its adoption.

Abstract: The coastal inlet dealt with in this paper has a fixed bed of exposed rock and mobile side boundaries of sand that overlies the bed rock platform. The work was undertaken to investigate the response of the throat section to natural hydraulic and meteorological events and to observe the nature and rate of recovery of the inlet after the more extreme events. These events included sea and swell states, wind, freshwater flood flows and short term changes in mean sea level (storm surges or meteorological tides). The three year study involved the inlet at the mouth of the Barwon River, Victoria, Australia (see Figure 1). The work forms part of a continuing study to assess the impact of engineering works on the stability of the estuary and inlet, and was required to assist in delineating the natural inlet variability from that due to engineering works. The study described here looked specifically at the inlet throat section which refers to the short narrow waterway connecting the estuary with the sea. The inlet throat section at Barwon Heads is well defined and is shown in Figure 1. The inlet itself is free of training walls and is normally flanked by sandy beaches. However, the depth of the inlet is limited by a bed of rock (see Figure 2), there being, in effect, unlimited mobility on a side boundary only.
