TL;DR: With the children who were retarded specifically in spelling, it was tentatively concluded that although their ability to use correspondence rules is adequate, they may have difficulty in selecting the correct grapheme when several BM possible for a particular phoneme.
Abstract: SUMMARY A group of 19 children retarded in both reading and spelling Mid a group of 4 children retarded specifically in spelling were given a series of tests designes to assess two components of the reading and spelling process, namely the ability to read and spell using correspondence rules and the ability to road and spell at a whole-word level. The children retarded in both reading and spelling were found to be deficient in the ability to read and spell using rules. Furthermore, although these children had the ability to process words wholistically, their achievement at whole-word reading and spelling was deficient. With the children who were retarded specifically in spelling, ii was tentatively concluded that although their ability to use correspondence rules is adequate, they may have difficulty in selecting the correct grapheme when several BM possible for a particular phoneme.

TL;DR: In this article, a series of O,O-dialkyldithiophosphate (dtp) and dialkylditiocarbamate (dtc) complexes of cadmium and mercury in dichloromethane solution were studied.
Abstract: Phosphorus-31, cadmium-113 and mercury-199 n.m.r. spectra have been recorded for a series of O,O-dialkyldithiophosphate (dtp) and dialkyldithiocarbamate (dtc) complexes of cadmium and mercury in dichloromethane solution. Both types of ligand are labile on the n.m.r. time scale at room temperature, although the exchange of dtc ligands can be slowed at low temperatures. .The complexes interact with tributylphosphine and tricyclohexylphosphine (pcy), but at room temperature the phosphines are also labile. At low temperatures, however, the phosphine exchange becomes slow on the n.m.r. time scale to allow identification of the adducts except for Cd(dtc)2 adducts with PBu3 which are still labile at -110°C. All the data indicate that cadmium has a lower affinity for phosphine than mercury and that dtc ligands are more strongly bound to the metals than dtp ligands.

TL;DR: The field of research on teaching is a burgeoning one as mentioned in this paper, and the research that looks at what pupils learn as they learn, while also seeking to trace through those teacher activities that appear to be associated with successful learning.
Abstract: The field of research on teaching is a burgeoning one. Prominent in this revival is the research that looks at what pupils learn as they learn, while also seeking to trace through those teacher activities that appear to be associated with successful learning. Studies of ‘pupil engaged learning time’, while not new, have provided teachers and researchers with an educationally significant and readily measurable variable. Focus on pupil classroom pursuits, particularly against the background of teacher intent and behaviour, has reinforced the widely held belief of the importance of classroom management strategies. This paper looks at the place of research on engaged time as it relates to research on teacher effectiveness, as well as surveying some of the more consistent findings, and the implications those hold for classroom practitioners.

TL;DR: In this paper, two experiments were carried out to test the idea that children use visual word-recognition knowledge to check for errors in spellings generated by phoneme-letter correspondence rules.
Abstract: Two experiments were carried out to test the idea that children use visual word-recognition knowledge to check for errors in spellings generated by phoneme-letter correspondence rules. Experiment 1 compared oral spelling performance with written spelling performance for words varying in frequency. Word-recognition checks were assumed to be possible for written spelling, but not for oral spelling. However, there was found to be no difference in accuracy between the two modes of spelling for words of any frequency. Experiment 2 compared oral and written spelling using a more sensitive repeated-measures design. Although written spelling was found to be better than oral spelling, this effect was present for words the children could not read as well as for those they could. Furthermore, spontaneous self-corrections during spelling were found to be uncommon and to be equally frequent for oral and written spelling. Both experiments therefore failed to find support for a word-recognition checking strategy.

TL;DR: The development of auditing standards in Australia occurred in three phases as mentioned in this paper : the first phase was marked by F. E. Trigg's presentation to the Australian Congress on Accounting in 1948.
Abstract: The development of auditing standards in Australia occurred in three phases. The primary professional initiatives have come from the Institute of Chartered Accountants in Australia. The first phase was marked by F. E. Trigg's presentation to the Australian Congress on Accounting in 1948. In this work Trigg relied heavily on English practice and thought. The second phase was largely a period of inactivity so far as auditing standards were concerned because of concern for other matters of greater urgency. The third phase was marked by the adoption of American ideas and, partly in response to continuing criticism of accounting, a commitment to the continuing review of auditing standards.

TL;DR: It was concluded that the reaction conditions employed in the present study were less severe than those encountered in many domestic and commercial food processes and that the novel amino acids could be formed in situ in many foods, especially those with a high amine content.
Abstract: Alkali heat treatment of soluble and insoluble proteins (lysozyme, phosvitin, α-casein and keratin) in the presence of biogenic amines (phenylethylamine, histamine, putrescine and spermine) resulted in the formation of novel amino acids. Isolation of these compounds was achieved by using 14C-labelled amines and detecting radioactive zones on electrophoretograms of the acid-hydrolysed proteins. Confirmation of identity was achieved for two novel amino acids which were synthesised. The mechanism was hypothesised to be the addition of amine to dehydroalanine and evidence was provided that the latter may originate, at least in some proteins, from serine residues. The yield of the novel amino acids was increased by prolonged heating, higher temperatures, higher pH and increased amine concentration. It was concluded that the reaction conditions employed in the present study were less severe than those encountered in many domestic and commercial food processes and that the novel amino acids could be formed in situ in many foods, especially those with a high amine content.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors used the level of attendance at 22 Commonwealth Prime Ministers/Heads of Government meetings (1944-1979) as an indicator to test several propositions concerning the importance of the Commonwealth to its member states.
Abstract: Level of attendance at 22 Commonwealth Prime Ministers/Heads of Government meetings (1944–1979) is used as an indicator to test several propositions concerning the importance of the Commonwealth to its member states. According to the indicator: (1) the Commonwealth has diminished in importance although not to the extent anticipated; (2) it is of more importance to old than to new members; (3) nevertheless, the Commonwealth is of more importance to new Commonwealth states than are the Organization of African Unity or the Nonaligned Movement; (4) the Commonwealth is less important to republics than to dominions or other monarchies; and (5) first generation leaders of new Commonwealth states attach more importance to the Commonwealth than do second generation leaders, especially when the latter have come to power by extraconstitutional means. It is proposed that a watch over levels of attendance is a useful means of monitoring the health of international summit conferencing systems like the Commonwealth.

Abstract: This paper reports the results of a five-year longitudinal study in which the subsequent success of 41 MBA managers was compared to that of 41 non-MBA managers, matched initially for age, tenure, speciality, position, experience and training. Initially there were no differences between the groups in salary, positional level, or job satisfaction. However, after five years, the MBA managers earned significantly more and occupied significantly higher positions than their non-MBA counterparts, but there was no difference in their satisfaction with their jobs. The results are taken as evidence that post-graduate management training can improve one's chances of success, at least in terms of salary earned and position attained. Further research is needed to uncover the reasons for this effect.

TL;DR: Major direction in the development of new products is the search for formulations in which the efficient contraceptive effect is retained; however, undesirable endocrine changes are reduced or eliminated.
Abstract: Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the endocrine effects of combined oral contraceptive (OC) preparations. It reviews reported changes in modern laboratory tests of endocrine status occurring in women using combined OC. The changes can vary with the chemical nature of the steroids used and their formulation. Combined OC are highly efficient ovulation inhibitors, which act on the pituitary gland and hypothalamus to prevent the surge of gonadotrophins that is responsible for ovum release. As a consequence, the characteristic changes in endogenous female sex hormones are absent in OC users. Apart from effects on the pituitary–ovarian axis, OC also have profound actions on many other endocrine systems. Changes can occur in thyroid hormones, catecholamines, renin–angiotensins, corticosteroids, aldosterone, androgens, insulin, growth hormones, glucagon, bradykinin, prolactin, and prostaglandins. There can also be tissue changes in sex hormone receptors and steroid-metabolizing enzymes. Many of these secondary changes can contribute to unwanted clinical effects of OC, and a major direction in the development of new products is the search for formulations in which the efficient contraceptive effect is retained; however, undesirable endocrine changes are reduced or eliminated.
