01 Aug 2018TL;DR: A prototype of a smart toothbrush including a mobile application and a novel approach to solve the issue based on the brushing style of the user to detect tooth and surface brushed concisely is presented.
Abstract: Dental caries has a prevalence of more than 90%. To prevent cavities, smart toothbrushes can help to guide the user and give valuable feedback. This requires the concise localization of the toothbrush within the mouth of the user. As of today, there is no convenient technique available to detect the tooth and surface brushed concisely. Therefore, this paper presents a prototype of a smart toothbrush including a mobile application and a novel approach to solve this issue based on the brushing style of the user. We utilized a 3-axis accelerometer, 3-axis gyroscope, 3-axis magnetometer combined with the random forest machine learning algorithm. With an accuracy of 99.63% for the right-handed model and an accuracy of 99.71% for the left-handed model, an evaluation of the localization detection approach showed an average accuracy of 9.0%. This shows that the brushing habits might be too variable to be captured by the random forest algorithm or that the data are not sufficient to generalize the pattern.

07 Jul 2004TL;DR: The ability of a blind student to pursue a career in mathematics, engineering, science or technology is severely limited by the students ability to manipulate complex mathematical equations as discussed by the authors, and the current STS deals with this problem from a broad perspective focusing on what are the best and worst practices in the area of presenting equations to blind math students.
Abstract: The ability of a blind student to pursue careers in mathematics, engineering, science or technology are severely limited by the students ability to manipulate complex mathematical equations. While there are exceptions to the rule, it has been difficult or impossible for blind members of our society to enter these career domains. The current STS deals with this problem from a broad perspective focusing on what are the best and worst practices in the area of presenting equations to blind math students.

01 Sep 2017TL;DR: An accurate detection method is proposed to address this serious problem of unknown input disturbances in power systems and one dynamic state observer is applied to a case study to estimate this system's states and the unknown input.
Abstract: There are many kinds of cyber disruptions in smart grids. In order to address these issues, dynamic state estimation is utilized. These estimators are able to efficiently capture the power system dynamics because of their fast update rate. Contrary to its undue influence, unknown input disruptions and their detection methods have not attracted many researchers' attentions. Cyber malfunction and faults can be emerged as unknown input disturbances in power systems. These interruptions can endanger the stability and security of the power system; therefore, in this paper an accurate detection method is proposed to address this serious problem. Additionally, one dynamic state observer is applied to a case study to estimate this system's states and the unknown input. This case study is load frequency of a single area power system. According to results, this proposed method is successfully able to estimate the states.
