Abstract: Background: We investigated the relationship among socioeconomic status factors, the risk of anemia, and iron deficiency among school-aged children in Korea. Methods: The sample consisted of fourth-grade students aged 10 y recruited from nine elementary schools in Korean urban areas in 2008 (n = 717). Anthropometric and blood biochemistry data were obtained for this crosssectional observational study. Anemia was defined as hemoglobin levels lower than 11.5 g/dl. Iron deficiency was defined as serum iron levels lower than 40 ug/dl. We also obtained data on parental education from questionnaires and on children’s diets from 3-day food diaries. Parental education was categorized as low or high, with the latter representing an educational level beyond high school. Results: Children with more educated mothers were less likely to develop anemia (P = 0.0324) and iron deficiency (P = 0.0577) than were those with less educated mothers. This group consumed more protein (P = 0.0004) and iron (P = 0.0012) from animal sources than did the children of less educated mothers, as reflected by their greater consumption of meat, poultry, and derivatives (P < 0.0001). Logistic regression analysis revealed a significant inverse relationship between maternal education and the prevalence of anemia (odds ratio: 0.52; 95% confidence interval: 0.32, 0.85). Conclusions: As a contributor to socioeconomic status, maternal education is important in reducing the risk of anemia and iron deficiency and in increasing children’s consumption of animal food sources.

Abstract: OBJECTIVE. The number of citations an article receives after its publication reflects its impact in the scientific community. The aim of this study was to identify and characterize the 100 top-cited articles published in radiology journals. MATERIALS AND METHODS. The top-cited articles published in 12 radiology journals were identified using the database of Science Citation Index Expanded (1945–2012). The 100 top-cited articles were selected and analyzed with regard to the number of citations, year of publication, publishing journal, authorship, institution and country of origin, type of article, radiologic subspecialty, main topic, and radiologic technique. RESULTS. The 100 top-cited articles were published in eight radiology journals, led by Radiology (n = 67) and followed by the American Journal of Roentgenology (n = 11). Abstract: PURPOSE. To determine the anatomic variations in the peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) thickness distribution and the relationship between these anatomic variations and other ocular variables. METHODS. A complete ophthalmic examination, including measurement of visual acuity, refraction, and axial length, was performed on 269 subjects with no ophthalmic abnormalities. Further, fundus photographs and optic disc cube scans of the subjects' eyes were obtained with a fundus camera and spectral domain OCT (Cirrus HD-OCT; Carl Zeiss Meditec, Inc., Dubin, CA), respectively. The distance between the foveola and the center of the optic nerve head was measured. The correlations of the angles of the peaks in the RNFL thickness profile with the axial length, spherical equivalent of refractive error (SE), and distance between the foveola and optic disc center were analyzed by simple linear regression. RESULTS. Considerable interindividual variations were found in the angles of the peaks in the RNFL thickness profile. Further, the angles in the eyes in each individual showed significant differences. The angles of the superior and inferior first peak correlated significantly with the SE, axial length, and distance between the foveola and optic disc center. CONCLUSIONS. Subjects with increased distance between the foveola and optic disc center are likely to have a temporal shift in peak RNFL thickness. RNFL profiles with horizontally deviated peak RNFL thickness differ considerably from the normative data provided with the HD-OCT system. The variations in RNFL thickness profiles should be taken into account.

Abstract: Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) comprises an aggregate of mesenchymal cells. However, the cellular origin of these mesenchymal phenotypes remains unclear. Transforming growth factor β1 (TGF-β1) has been known as the main cytokine involved in the pathogenesis of IPF. We examined whether the potent fibrogenic cytokine TGF-β1 could induce the epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in the human alveolar epithelial cell line, A549, and determined whether snail expression is associated with the phenotypic changes observed in the A549 cells. EMT was investigated with cells morphology changes under phase-contrast microscopy, western blotting, and indirect immunofluorescence stains. E-cadherin and transcription factor, snail, were also evaluated by measuring mRNA levels using reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain rection (RT-PCR) analysis. The data showed that TGF-β1 induced A549 cells with epithelial cell characteristics to undergo EMT in a concentration-dependent manner. Following TGF-β1 treatment, A549 cells induced EMT characterized by cells morphological changes, loss of epithelial markers E-caherin and cytokeratin, increased stress fiber reorganization by F-actin, and cytokeratin replacement by vimentin. Although IL-1β failed to induce A549 cells to undergo EMT, the combination of TGF-β1 and IL-1β showed synergy effects in cells morphology changes and the expression of mesenchymal markers. The snail expression study using RT-PCR analysis provided that loss of E-cadherin expression was associated with snail expression. Stimulation of A54 cells with TGF-β1 plus IL-1β revealed a higher level of snail expression. Our data showed that EMT of A549 cells might be closely associated with snail expression.
