TL;DR: Shanmugam et al. as mentioned in this paper showed a simple facies association and absence or scarcity of emergence indicators characterizes the Hollin and Napo T-U sands.
Abstract: The article by Shanmugam et al. (2000) is a welcome addition to the scant sedimentological literature on the Oriente Basin and its continuation in Colombia, the Putumayo Basin (Higgs, 1997a). Shanmugam et al. (2000) reinterpreted the Hollin and Napo T-U sands as tide-dominated estuarine deposits, rejecting a previous deltaic model. Neither model, however, accords with the stated lack of evidence for subaerial emergence. An alternative, tidal shelf interpretation is promoted here, and petroleum reservoir implications discussed. Also, although Shanmugam et al. (2000) did not report any sequence boundaries, their data suggest that angular (tectonic) sequence boundaries occur at the base of the A and B limestones, signifying possible incised valleys cutting into the U and T sands, again important for oil exploration. ### Lack of Emergence Indicators The 516 ft (157 m) of cores from seven wells examined by Shanmugam et al. (2000) show a simple facies association of shales, heterolithics, and cross-bedded sands. "[N]o evidence for subaerial exposure" exists (Shanmugam et al., 2000, p. 674); for example, "rooting is lacking" (Shanmugam et al., 2000, p. 660) and no coal beds, paleosoils, or desiccation cracks were reported. Sparse interpreted marsh deposits (<1% of one 58 ft core) (Shanmugam et al., 2000, table 2) are based on nondiagnostic interpretation criteria, that is, sandstone with "intervals of concentrated carbonaceous fragments … may be interpreted as a marsh environment" (Shanmugam et al., 2000, p. 660). Alternatively, such plant-flake concentrations could occur on a shelf because of tidal-current segregation of particles. An interpreted "fluvial channel" is based solely on "cross-stratification and basal lags" (Shanmugam et al., 2000, p. 656), both of which can also apply to submarine tidal bars (e.g., Stride et al., 1982, figure 5.22; Dalrymple, 1992, figure 29C). The same facies association and absence or scarcity of emergence indicators characterizes the Hollin and Napo T-U …

TL;DR: In this article, the authors used a porous molecular sieve which contains a metal in an oxidation state above zero within the interior of the pore structure of the sieve as well as a cerium component which enhances the stability and sulfur reduction activity of the catalyst.
Abstract: The sulfur content of liquid cracking products, especially the cracked gasoline, of the catalytic cracking process is reduced by the use of a sulfur reduction catalyst composition comprising a porous molecular sieve which contains a metal in an oxidation state above zero within the interior of the pore structure of the sieve as well as a cerium component which enhances the stability and sulfur reduction activity of the catalyst. The molecular sieve is normally a faujasite such as USY. The primary sulfur reduction component is normally a metal of Period 3 of the Periodic Table, preferably vanadium. The sulfur reduction catalyst may be used in the form of a separate particle additive or as a component of an integrated cracking/sulfur reduction catalyst.

TL;DR: A geochemical study of the heavy-mineral suite in Triassic strata from two wells in the Beryl Embayment was undertaken in order to identify changes in provenance through the Lewis Formation.
Abstract: A geochemical study of the heavy-mineral suite in Triassic strata from two wells in the Beryl Embayment was undertaken in order to identify changes in provenance through the Lewis Formation. Detailed provenance studies also allow the reconstruction of paleodrainage patterns and aid in predicting facies distributions. The heavy-mineral assemblage in the Lewis Formation is dominated by almandine-pyrope garnets, which are typically derived from pelitic metasediments, together with zircon, apatite, tourmaline, and rutile, some of which are rich in niobium (Nb). These latter phases could have been sourced either from metasediments or granitic protoliths, although Nb-rich rutiles have a more restricted paragenesis, being associated with alkaline plutonic rocks and granite pegmatites. In the uppermost members of the Lewis Formation influxes of more "exotic" provenance-specific heavy-minerals such as Cr-spinel, staurolite, and chloritoid become more common. The chemistry of the detrital Cr-spinel implies that it was derived from an ophiolitic source. Gross grain size, and facies changes in the Embayment suggest a NW to SE dispersal of detritus. Although hydraulic sorting of the heavy-mineral suite between relatively distal and proximal locations has resulted in subtle variations in whole-rock trace-element geochemical signatures, the complete overlap in the geochemical data from distal and proximal wells requires that the sediments were essentially derived from a single source area. The combination of mineralogical, sedimentological, and geochemical data implies that the dominant source for these sediments was the Devonian Old Red Sandstone (ORS), the Shetland ophiolite and the underlying Dalradian metasedimentary rocks of the Shetland Isles and the East Shetland Platform. Provenance studies such as this are central to the reconstruction of paleo-drainage patterns, which in turn lead to improved prediction of potential reservoir quality, distribution, and connectivity.

TL;DR: In this paper, statistical parameters describing heterogeneity in the Proterozoic basement of the Baltic Shield were estimated from controlled-source seismic data, using a statistical inversion based on the theory of wave propagation through random media (WPRM), derived from the parabolic wave approximation.
Abstract: Summary Statistical parameters describing heterogeneity in the Proterozoic basement of the Baltic Shield were estimated from controlled-source seismic data, using a statistical inversion based on the theory of wave propagation through random media (WPRM), derived from the parabolic wave approximation. Synthetic plane-wave seismograms generated from models of random media show consistency with WPRM theory for forward propagation in the weak-scattering regime, whilst for two-way propagation a discrepancy exists that is due to contamination of the primary wave by backscattered energy. Inverse modelling of the real seismic data suggests that the upper crust to depths of ∼ 15 km can be characterized, subject to the range of spatial resolution of the method, by a medium with an exponential spatial autocorrelation function, an rms velocity fluctuation of 1.5 ± 0.5 per cent and a correlation length of 150 ± 50 m. Further inversions show that scattering is predominantly occurring in the uppermost ∼ 2 km of crust, where rms velocity fluctuation is 3 − 6 per cent. Although values of correlation distance are well constrained by these inversions, there is a trade-off between thickness of scattering layer and rms velocity perturbation estimates, with both being relatively poorly resolved. The higher near-surface heterogeneity is interpreted to arise from fractures in the basement rocks that close under lithostatic pressure for depths greater than 2 − 3 km.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used filter paper to keep the structure of asphalt in place, and obtained best observation conditions with rigid cantilevers and a very smooth surface (drop form).
Abstract: AFM is an easy, nondestructive tool to study the structure of asphalt and the association and size of its individual particles. Best observation conditions were obtained with rigid cantilevers and a very smooth surface (drop form). In comparison to AFM, SEM needs an adequate preparation method to prevent artefacts by the deoiling step. This was obtained by using filter paper, which keeps the structure in place.
