TL;DR: Theoretical and experimental studies of thermal self-defocusing and self-focusing CW laser beams in liquids and solids are given in this article, where an analytical theory of the thermal selfactions, including aberration phenomena, is developed.
Abstract: Theoretical and experimental studies of thermal self-defocusing and self-focusing CW laser beams in liquids and solids are given. An analytical theory of thermal self-actions, including aberration phenomena, is developed. Special attention is given to the problem of thermal self-defocusing in liquids with flows (wind or convection). The new effect of continuous light-beam deflection in absorbing moving media is discussed.

TL;DR: In this article, a theory of nonstationary nonlinear wave phenomena occurring in the field of ultrashort high-intensity light pulses is developed (harmonic generation and parametric amplification stimulated Raman scattering).
Abstract: A theory of nonstationary nonlinear wave phenomena occurring in the field of ultrashort high-intensity light pulses is developed (harmonic generation and parametric amplification stimulated Raman scattering). The main equations are given, the group velocity mismatch effects are studied, and special attention is paid to the high-conversion conditions. The possibilities of picosecond pulse narrowing on account of linear and nonlinear nonresonance parametric amplification and harmonic generation are studied in detail. The factors that determine the minimum light-pulse duration (dispersion broadening) are examined. A nonstationary theory of stimulated Raman scattering (SRS) is developed. Expressions for minimum pulse duration in forward and backward SRS are given. Reduction of Raman amplification with a picosecond pump is discussed.

TL;DR: The incorporation of the 14CH3-group from labelled methionine or S-adenosylmethionine is often taken as a measure of the amount of 6-MAP and 5-MC in the DNA of bacteria5–7 and other micro-organisms, but this way of determining rare bases is not always reliable because it is possible that there are other methyl donors besides Methionine.
Abstract: THE species specificity and functional role of rare bases in DNA have not been thoroughly studied and there are few data on the occurrence of rare bases in bacterial DNA. The commonest rare base in bacterial DNA is 6-methyl-aminopurine (6-MAP)1–4, but recently some bacterial DNAs were shown to contain 5-methylcytosine (5-MC) as well5. The incorporation of the 14CH3-group from labelled methionine or S-adenosylmethionine is often taken as a measure of the amount of 6-MAP and 5-MC in the DNA of bacteria5–7 and other micro-organisms8. But this way of determining rare bases is not always reliable because it is possible that there are other methyl donors besides methionine. Moreover, labelled methionine may be metabolized and incorporated into the heterocyclic ring of newly formed bases.

TL;DR: In this article, the heat of adsorption on graphitized thermal carbon blacks, BN, and many sulfides has been studied and shown to be convex towards the pressure axis and the maount of adorption is very low.
Abstract: Completely hydrophobic adsorbents such as graphitized thermal carbon blacks, BN, and many sulfides are nonspecific, provided that the structural defects are largely eliminated. Their surfaces carry no π-bonds or groups with lone electron pairs, ions, or free radicals. The adsorption isotherms of water vapor on such surfaces are convex towards the pressure axis and the maount of adsorption is very low. Adsorbates capable of forming intermolecular hydrogen bonds are adsorbed on such surfaces at first as isolated molecules with a heat of adsorption much below the heat of condensation, but, with increasing surface coverage, they become associated, and the heat of adsorption abruptly increases. Certain porous polymers, for instance, chromosorb 102, are also fairly hydrophotic, although the presence on their surfaces of aromatic π-bonds and possibly oxygen-containing groups impart to them a slight specificity, especially in relation to adsorbate molecules containing OH or NH groups. Specific adsorbents may be made nonspecific by chemical modification, grafting saturated groups to their surface, or adsorption of a dense layer of saturated macromolecules. Conversely, the deposition on th carbon black surface of dense layer of macromolecules or high melting organic substances, containing π-bonds or functional groups with lone electron pairs, imparts specificity to the surface. the heats of adsorption on modified adsorbents are usually lower than the heats of condensation. The oxidation in liquid media of carbon blacks makes them as hydrophilic as hydroxylated silicas.

Abstract: The planar Hall effect of Ni, Fe, Co and Ni-Fe films with thicknesses between 100 and 1500 A is investigated in the temperature range 77 to 293°K. It is shown that the experimental data obtained may be explained by assuming that the mechanism of scattering and reflection on film surfaces does not give an appreciable contribution to the planar Hall effect.

TL;DR: In this paper, the existence of pyrochlore-type compounds has been established and phase relationships in the HfO2Gd2O3 system have been studied by thermal and X-ray analysis.
Abstract: Phase relationships in the HfO2Gd2O3 system have been studied by thermal and X-ray analysis and the phase diagram of the system has been plotted. The existence of a compound Gd2Hf2O7, with a pyrochlore structure [ a = 10.490 A ], has been established. This compound melts congruently at 2440 °C. Solid solutions based on the pyrochlore-type compound are, on each side of the stoichiometric composition, transformed into fluorite-type solid solutions. Two hexagonal compounds of an M7O11.5- and M7O11-type have been found in the Gd2O3-rich region (>50 mol.% Gd2O3), viz., Gd5.25Hf1.75O11.375, which possesses a very narrow range of homogeneity, is formed at about 60 mol.% Gd2O3,and Gd6HfO11 which is formed within the Gd2O3 concentration range between 75 and 90 mol.% Gd2O3. The first of these compounds undergoes a transformation at 1500 °C into a cubic solid solutions of fluorite and C-type, and the second above 1700 °C into a cubic solid solution in C-Gd2O3.

TL;DR: In this paper, a review of the latest works at the University of Moscow in the field of pulsed parametric oscillators and the new application of parametric light interaction-nonlinear spectrograph is presented.
Abstract: The paper presents the review of the latest works at the University of Moscow in the field of pulsed parametric oscillators and the new application of parametric light interaction-nonlinear spectrograph. This spectrograph is based on the steep frequency dependence of phase-matched angles for nonlinear mixing processes. Two new types of oscillators are considered: one having a cavity without dielectric coatings, the other a travelling-wave oscillator that is really an amplifier of parametric superluminescence. The latter has a narrow spectrum of radiation (1-2 A). The most possible applications of oscillators and their necessary characteristics are given.

TL;DR: In this article, the effect of electron-hole interaction on the electroabsorption in semiconductors is investigated and the effective time-dependent Schrodinger equation of the problem is solved exactly for x 0.
Abstract: The effect of electron–hole interaction (excitonic effects) on the electro-absorption in semiconductors is investigated. The effective time-dependent Schrodinger equation of the problem is solved exactly for x 0. Explicit expressions for the shape of the exciton lines in the electric field are given. The field-induced change of the interband absorption is discussed in the limiting cases of weak and strong electron-hole interaction.

TL;DR: Treatment with glycine-HCl buffer solution of resistant M10-45-2 cells after incubation with poliovirus at 0 C did not result in recovery of infectious virus, although such release did take place after treatment of sensitive M10 cells.
Abstract: Two cell lines, M10-45-2 and L-41, were studied, each of which possessed specific resistance either to poliovirus or to coxsackievirus. Infection of M10-45-2 cells with poliovirus ribonucleic acid (RNA) and L-41 cells with infectious coxsackievirus RNA was accompanied by production of complete viruses in each of the resistant cell lines. During incubation of the cells with the virus to which they were resistant, the amount of infectious virus did not decrease. Treatment with glycine-HCl buffer solution (pH 2.5) of resistant M10-45-2 cells after incubation with poliovirus at 0 C did not result in recovery of infectious virus, although such release did take place after treatment of sensitive M10 cells. Infection of resistant cells with virus containing poliovirus RNA and coxsackievirus proteins resulted in production of poliovirus in M10-45-2 cells but not in L-41 cells. The resistant cells are apparently unable to adsorb the virus to which they are resistant.
