TL;DR: In this article, the divergent models pursued by South Korea and Taiwan in regard to technological catching-up and their ongoing transition towards innovation-based economies are analyzed, and it is found that South Korea's former high-debt and chaebol-dominated model inclined it to pursue a Schumpeterian scale-based technological development, while Taiwan's former pro-stability, small and medium-sized-enterprise (SME)-based model tended to favour its emphasis on a neo-Marshallian network-based technology development.
Abstract: This paper sets out to analyse the divergent models pursued by South Korea and Taiwan in regard to technological catching-up and their ongoing transition towards innovation-based economies. It is found that South Korea's former high-debt and chaebol-dominated model inclined it to pursue a Schumpeterian scale-based technological development, while Taiwan's former pro-stability, small- and medium-sized-enterprise (SME)-based model tended to favour its emphasis on a neo-Marshallian network-based technological development. It will be argued that the state's approach to economic liberalisation and firms' demand for capital for technological upgrading are the major factors that have underpinned the adjustment efforts of these two countries.

TL;DR: An uplink packet scheduling with call admission control (CAC) mechanism that is token bucket based and a mathematical model of characterizing traffic flows is proposed, showing that the delay requirements of rtPS flows are promised and the delay and loss can be predicted.
Abstract: The IEEE 802.16 standard was designed for Wireless Metropolitan Area Network (WMAN). The coverage of this new technology is expanded up to 50 km. IEEE 802.16 also has inherent QoS mechanism while the transmission rate can be up to 70Mbps. However, the main part of 802.16 - packet scheduling, was not defined and left as an open issue. In this paper, we present an uplink packet scheduling with call admission control (CAC) mechanism that is token bucket based. Also, a mathematical model of characterizing traffic flows is proposed. Simulations are carried out to validate our CAC algorithms and models. These results show that the delay requirements of rtPS flows are promised and the delay and loss can be predicted p recis e l y b y u s in g ou r math emati c al mod e ls .

TL;DR: Analysis of physician response to implementation of an activity-based costing system for treatment of cataract patients finds changes in practice patterns, where physicians redeployed resources toward more severely ill patients and decreased average length of stay.
Abstract: This research examines physician response to implementation of an activity-based costing (ABC) system developed and designed with physician input. We analyze changes in resource utilization for treatment of cataract patients and find changes in practice patterns, where physicians redeployed resources toward more severely ill patients and decreased average length of stay. We also find preliminary evidence of improvement in financial performance. We contribute to research investigating the influence of user participation on accounting system success, ABC system success, and hospital accounting information systems.

TL;DR: The majority of Taiwan residents now have Taiwan-centered national identities, viewing the island as separate and independent from the Chinese mainland as discussed by the authors, thus, few people on the island support Beijing's "one country, two systems" proposal.
Abstract: The majority of Taiwan residents now have Taiwan-centered national identities, viewing the island as separate and independent from the Chinese mainland. Thus, few people on the island support Beijing's ““one country, two systems”” proposal. China's new leaders need to present fresh plans if they are truly committed to peaceful unification.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined how egoistic appeals in charity advertising help regulate guilt and result in more favorable ad attitudes and donation intentions, and proposed an affect forecasting and regulation model to depict the process by which guilt states are mitigated more effectively by egoistic appeal, because they strengthen the affect forecasting belief that giving to charity leads to happiness.
Abstract: This article examines how egoistic (versus altruistic) appeals in charity advertising help regulate guilt and result in more favorable ad attitudes and donation intentions. The proposed affect forecasting and regulation model depicts the process by which guilt states are mitigated more effectively by egoistic appeals, because they strengthen the affect forecasting belief that giving to charity leads to happiness. Such enhanced affect forecasting beliefs further improve ad attitudes, which lead to greater donation intentions. This research tests the proposed model by exploring three possible types of guilt: existing guilt (Study 1), integral guilt (Study 2), and incidental guilt (Study 3).
