TL;DR: A framework is created based on four major components of crowdsourcing: the task that is outsourced, the crowd which carries out the task, the crowdsourcing process, and the outcome evaluation to support various phases of managerial decision-making and problem solving.
Abstract: Crowdsourcing can be viewed as a method of distributing work to a large number of workers (the crowd) both inside and outside of an organization, for the purpose of improving decision making, completing cumbersome tasks, or co-creation of designs and other projects. Of the various applications of crowdsourcing, the one investigated in this paper is to support various phases of managerial decision-making and problem solving. To examine the research issues related to such support, we created a framework based on four major components of crowdsourcing: the task that is outsourced, the crowd which carries out the task, the crowdsourcing process, and the outcome evaluation. Each component is examined from the managerial, behavioral, and information technology aspects. This framework enables us to organize existing literature and identify key research issues. Suggested topics for future research are described.

TL;DR: In this paper, a simple arithmetic-geometric method was proposed to solve the problem of conditionally permissible delay in payments in an economic order quantity model, in which the supplier offers the retailer a fully permissible delay of M periods (i.e., there is no interest charge until M ) if the retailer orders more than or equal to a predetermined quantity W. However, if the retailers order quantity is less than W, then the retailer must make a partial payment to the supplier, and enjoy a permissible delay for the remaining balance.

TL;DR: A web-based reading annotation system with an attention-based self-regulated learning mechanism (ASRLM), which is based on brainwave detection, is designed to enhance the sustained attention of learners while reading annotated English texts online, and thereby promote online reading performance.
Abstract: Due to the rapid development of information technology, web-based learning has become a dominant trend. That is, learners can often learn anytime and anywhere without being restricted by time and space. Autonomic learning primarily occurs in web-based learning environments, and self-regulated learning ( SRL) is key to autonomic learning performance. Moreover, sustained attention to web-based learning activities can be challenging for students. Therefore, a web-based reading annotation system with an attention-based self-regulated learning mechanism ( ASRLM), which is based on brainwave detection, is designed to enhance the sustained attention of learners while reading annotated English texts online, and thereby promote online reading performance. In total, 126 Grade 7 students in four classes at a junior high school in New Taipei City, Taiwan, are the participants. Among the four classes, two classes are randomly distributed to the experimental group and the other two classes are randomly distributed to the control group. The experimental group utilizes the ASRLM to support their reading of annotated English texts online, whereas the control group is not supported by the ASRLM while reading annotated English texts online. Experimental results show that sustained attention and reading comprehension of the experimental group are better than those of the control group. Moreover, the web-based reading system with ASRLM support promotes the sustained attention and reading comprehension of female learners more than those of male learners while reading annotated English texts online. Additionally, learners with high- SRL ability in the experimental group have better sustained attention and reading comprehension than those learners with low- SRL ability. Furthermore, the sustained attention and reading comprehension of the experimental group are strongly correlated, and the duration of sustained attention strongly predicts their reading comprehension performance. TL;DR: In this paper, the authors consider two effects of debt originating from agency theory, namely the takeover defense and the disciplinary effect of debt, on the speed of adjustment to the optimal capital structure and find that both overlevered and underlevered firms with weak governance adjust slowly toward their target debt levels.
Abstract: The effects of corporate governance on optimal capital structure choices have been well documented, though without offering empirical evidence about the impact of corporate governance quality on the adjustment speed toward an optimal capital structure. This study simultaneously considers two effects of debt originating from agency theory—the takeover defense and the disciplinary effects of debt—on the speed of adjustment to the optimal capital structure. Corporate governance has a distinct effect on the speed of capital structure adjustment: weak governance firms that are underlevered tend to adjust slowly to the optimal capital structure, because the costs of the disciplinary role of debt outweigh the benefits of using debt as a takeover defense tool. Although overlevered weak governance firms also adjust slowly, they do so because they are reluctant to decrease their leverage toward the target level to deter potential raiders, especially if they face a serious takeover threat. Therefore, this study finds that both overlevered and underlevered firms with weak governance adjust slowly toward their target debt levels, though with different motivations.

TL;DR: A collaborative reading annotation system with a reading annotation and interactive discussion scaffold (CRAS-RAIDS) for improving reading performance in collaborative digital reading environments and shows that the experimental group significantly outperformed the control group in direct and explicit comprehension, inferential comprehension performance, and use of reading strategy.
Abstract: As children now spend considerable time reading electronic media, digital reading skills and good reading comprehension are essential. However, many studies agree that screen-based reading leads to shallow reading, short attention spans, and poor comprehension. Therefore, this work presents a collaborative reading annotation system with a reading annotation and interactive discussion scaffold (CRAS-RAIDS) for improving reading performance in collaborative digital reading environments. This study used a quasi-experimental design. Fifty-three Grade 5 students were recruited from two classes of an elementary school in Taoyuan County, Taiwan. One class was randomly designated the experimental group used the proposed CRAS-RAIDS support for collaborative reading. The other class was designated the control group and used the traditional paper-based reading annotation method and face-to-face discussions. The two groups were then compared in terms of reading attitude, reading comprehension, and use of reading strategy in an active reading context. Analytical results show that the experimental group significantly outperformed the control group in direct and explicit comprehension, inferential comprehension performance, and use of reading strategy. Moreover, the experimental group, but not the control group, had a significantly improved reading attitude in the total dimensions and in the behavioral and affective sub-dimensions. Additionally, the experimental group showed positive interest and high learning satisfaction.

TL;DR: Although limited data is available, the current meta-analysis shows that linezolid treatment for VRE bacteremia was associated with a lower mortality than daptomycin treatment, however, the results should be interpreted cautiously because of limitations inherent to retrospective studies and the high heterogeneity among studies.
Abstract: Linezolid, which has bacteriostatic activity, is approved for the treatment of vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) infections. Meanwhile, daptomycin exerts bactericidal activity against VRE, but is not approved for the treatment of VRE bacteremia. Only a few studies with small sample sizes have compared the effectiveness of these drugs for treatment of VRE bacteremia. PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library were searched for studies of VRE bacteremia treatment published before January 1, 2014. All studies reporting daptomycin and linezolid treatment outcomes simultaneously were included. The endpoints were mortality and microbiological cure. The adjusted odds ratios (aORs) of mortality in daptomycin- and linezolid-treated patients were extracted if available. Pooled odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated for all outcomes using a random-effects model. Thirteen studies (532 patients receiving daptomycin, 656 patients receiving linezolid) met the selection criteria. All studies had retrospective cohort designs and relatively small sample sizes. Eight studies compared the aORs of mortality in daptomycin- and linezolid-treated patients. Four studies were published as conference papers and there was significant heterogeneity among these studies (I 2 = 63%, p = 0.04). Daptomycin use was not associated with better microbiological cure (daptomycin vs. linezolid, OR: 0.67, 95% CI: 0.42–1.06, p = 0.09). However, mortality was higher in patients receiving daptomycin (OR: 1.43, 95% CI: 1.09–1.86, p = 0.009). Subgroup analysis of studies that reported aORs indicated that daptomycin was associated with higher mortality (OR: 1.59, 95% CI: 1.02–2.50, p = 0.04). There was no evidence of publication bias, but all enrolled studies were retrospective, had small sample sizes, and had substantial limitations. Although limited data is available, the current meta-analysis shows that linezolid treatment for VRE bacteremia was associated with a lower mortality than daptomycin treatment. However, the results should be interpreted cautiously because of limitations inherent to retrospective studies and the high heterogeneity among studies. A large randomized trial is needed to confirm the present results.

Abstract: This research presents a proposed model which addresses the drivers of innovation in channel integration in supply chain management. A total of 317 Taiwan qualified high-tech manufacturers were mailed questionnaires and 84 valid samples(response rate of 26%) were analyzed by AMOS analysis. The results indicate that a significant relationship has been established between market orientation and supply chain performance. The findings reveal that market orientation is significantly related to embedding operant resources and resource integration, and that resource orientation is significantly related to value co-creation,embedding operant resources and resource integration. The findings also confirm that value co-creation and the value constellations as the drivers of innovation in channel integration are positively associated with supply chain performance.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigate whether publicly available patent information is incrementally useful in assessing the benefits and risks of corporate innovation from bondholders' perspective, and find that firm-level innovation performance is a determinant of bond issuers' perceived default risk and, by extension, corporate bond pricing.
Abstract: Prior literature documents mixed evidence about how research and development activities affect corporate creditworthiness. We investigate whether publicly available patent information is incrementally useful in assessing the benefits and risks of corporate innovation from bondholders’ perspective. We find that firm-level innovation performance — measured in terms of the level, impact, generality, and originality of firms’ patents — is a determinant of bond issuers’ perceived default risk and, by extension, corporate bond pricing. Investors consider more technologically innovative bond issuers to have lower default probabilities; consequently, bonds issued by more innovative firms have lower issuance premiums and lower realized excess returns. Our findings are further supported by instrumental regressions that use the monetary and time costs of innovation, and by cross-sectional tests based on exogenous shocks from state-level R&D tax credits.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors explored the mechanisms that explain the relationship between transformational leadership and team performance and found that TFL predicts high levels of team performance through shaping team goal orientation and group affective tone.
Abstract: Extending previous research on transformational leadership (TFL), the present study explores the mechanisms that explain the relationship between TFL and team performance. Drawing on the three-stage model of TFL (Conger & Kanungo, 1998), we theorize that TFL predicts high levels of team performance through shaping team goal orientation and group affective tone. To test the hypotheses, we use data collected from managers and members of 61 research and development teams and use the partial least squares analysis to test hypotheses. The results show that TFL positively predicts positive group affective tone through team learning goal orientation but negatively predicts negative group affective tone via team avoiding goal orientation. Finally, we find that positive group affective tone is positively associated with team performance, whereas negative group affective tone is negatively associated with team performance.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined how egoistic appeals in charity advertising help regulate guilt and result in more favorable ad attitudes and donation intentions, and proposed an affect forecasting and regulation model to depict the process by which guilt states are mitigated more effectively by egoistic appeal, because they strengthen the affect forecasting belief that giving to charity leads to happiness.
Abstract: This article examines how egoistic (versus altruistic) appeals in charity advertising help regulate guilt and result in more favorable ad attitudes and donation intentions. The proposed affect forecasting and regulation model depicts the process by which guilt states are mitigated more effectively by egoistic appeals, because they strengthen the affect forecasting belief that giving to charity leads to happiness. Such enhanced affect forecasting beliefs further improve ad attitudes, which lead to greater donation intentions. This research tests the proposed model by exploring three possible types of guilt: existing guilt (Study 1), integral guilt (Study 2), and incidental guilt (Study 3).

TL;DR: Based on the presented techniques, Stranger, an automata-based string analysis tool for detecting string-related security vulnerabilities in PHP applications is implemented and able to detect known/unknown vulnerabilities, and prove the absence of vulnerabilities with respect to given attack patterns.
Abstract: Verifying string manipulating programs is a crucial problem in computer security. String operations are used extensively within web applications to manipulate user input, and their erroneous use is the most common cause of security vulnerabilities in web applications. We present an automata-based approach for symbolic analysis of string manipulating programs. We use deterministic finite automata (DFAs) to represent possible values of string variables. Using forward reachability analysis we compute an over-approximation of all possible values that string variables can take at each program point. Intersecting these with a given attack pattern yields the potential attack strings if the program is vulnerable. Based on the presented techniques, we have implemented Stranger, an automata-based string analysis tool for detecting string-related security vulnerabilities in PHP applications. We evaluated Stranger on several open-source Web applications including one with 350,000+ lines of code. Stranger is able to detect known/unknown vulnerabilities, and, after inserting proper sanitization routines, prove the absence of vulnerabilities with respect to given attack patterns.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors examine how consensus between operational-level managers and employees on strategy implementation affects the effectiveness of performance measures and employee performance and find that consensus on the implementation of the customer-oriented strategy is positively associated with frontline employees' performance.
Abstract: In this article, we examine how consensus between operational-level managers and employees on strategy implementation affects the effectiveness of performance measures and employee performance. We use field-based surveys and proprietary archival data from a Taiwanese financial services company to answer our research questions. Consistent with the predictions of person–organization fit theory, we find that consensus on the implementation of the customer-oriented strategy is positively associated with frontline employees’ performance. Our results also indicate that the incentive effect of using performance measures in performance evaluation and promotion is stronger for employees with a higher level of consensus. Our findings suggest that consensus is critical to the success of an organization’s strategy implementation and the effectiveness of performance measures.

TL;DR: Five guidelines for planning and evaluating NeuroIS studies are offered to advance IS research, to apply the standards of neuroscience, to justify the choice of a neuroscience strategy of inquiry, to map IS concepts to bio-data, and to relate the experimental setting to IS-authentic situations.
Abstract: Neuroscience provides a new lens through which to study information systems (IS). These NeuroIS studies investigate the neurophysiological effects related to the design, use, and impact of IS. A major advantage of this new methodology is its ability to examine human behavior at the underlying neurophysiological level, which was not possible before, and to reduce self-reporting bias in behavior research. Previous studies that have revisited important IS concepts such as trust and distrust have challenged and extended our knowledge. An increasing number of neuroscience studies in IS have given researchers, editors, reviewers, and readers new challenges in terms of determining what makes a good NeuroIS study. While earlier papers focused on how to apply specific methods (e.g., functional magnetic resonance imaging), this paper takes an IS perspective in deriving six phases for conducting NeuroIS research and offers five guidelines for planning and evaluating NeuroIS studies: to advance IS research, to apply ...

TL;DR: Overall, this study establishes an explanatory platform for newcomers' participation behavior by combining self-determination theory with relationship management theories and incorporates both mediating and moderating effects.
Abstract: This study proposes and tests a model that outlines the antecedents of newcomers' participation behavior in virtual communities and incorporates both mediating and moderating effects. According to self-reported data from two periods and objective behavioral data, the combined fulfillment of needs for autonomy, relatedness, and competence determines newcomers' cognitive social identity, which then influences participation behavior through affective commitment and collective self-esteem. Of the three needs, autonomy exerts the strongest effect on cognitive social identity. Moreover, relationship satisfaction moderates the relationship between awareness of group membership and affective commitment, which helps explain why newcomers with high awareness of their group membership might not cohere with a particular social group. Overall , by combining self-determination theory with relationship management theories, this study establishes an explanatory platform for newcomers' participation behavior. The authors conclude with a discussion of the managerial and research implications of these findings.

TL;DR: The decision-making matrix combined with an efficiency improvement map proposed in this study can clearly define the benchmark that can be emulated by inefficient BHCs and help BHC managers to develop appropriate strategies needed to enhance their overall efficiency.
Abstract: This paper investigates the association between the performance of bank holding companies (BHCs) and their intellectual capital (IC). We start from constructing an innovation ratio two-stage DEA model and then applies fuzzy multiple objective programming approaches to calculate the efficiency score. This model provides a common scale for comparing performance, increases the discriminating power, and simplifies the calculation process. The links between IC and the BHCs' performance are also investigated by means of the truncated-regression model, and a positive relationship between them is found. The decision-making matrix combined with an efficiency improvement map proposed in this study can clearly define the benchmark that can be emulated by inefficient BHCs and help BHC managers to develop appropriate strategies needed to enhance their overall efficiency.

TL;DR: In this paper, a survey of full-time employees of ongoing mentoring relationships to investigate relationships among mentors' perceived organizational support (POS), the extent of mentoring functions proteges received, and proteges' POS was conducted.
Abstract: Summary We surveyed full-time employees of ongoing mentoring relationships toinvestigaterelationships among mentors’ perceived organizational support (POS), the extent of mentoring functions proteges received, and proteges’ POS. Moreover, we examined the moderating role of mentors’ altruistic personality in the relationship between mentors’ POS and mentoring functions received. Results showed that mentors’ POS was positively related to the extent of mentoring proteges reported receiving, which was then related positively to proteges’ POS.Furthermore, the extent of mentoring received partially mediated the relationship between mentors’ POS and proteges’ POS. We also found that mentors’ altruistic personality moderated the positive relationship between mentors’ POS and the extent of mentoring received such that this relationship was stronger for low altruistic mentors. Theoretical and practical implications of the findings are discussed. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

TL;DR: An extended expectation–confirmation model (ECM) is proposed that explicitly incorporates experiential learning, perceived self-efficacy, and perceived usefulness to examine blog continuance learning behavioural intentions to demonstrate the blog as a good learning platform.
Abstract: Web-based learning is ubiquitous. The blog is a learning channel where learners acquire useful knowledge, to use in specific situations or in dealing with issues. These benefits may stimulate learning motivation for learners. Whether each blog learner can effectively enhance continuance learning intentions is a valuable research issue. Hence, this study proposes an extended expectation–confirmation model ECM that explicitly incorporates experiential learning, perceived self-efficacy, and perceived usefulness to examine blog continuance learning behavioural intentions. A survey of 318 bloggers provides strong support for the extended model. Results of the study show that these variables have a strong effect on satisfaction. This study demonstrates the blog as a good learning platform, and provides implications and recommendations resulting from the study.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors empirically identified crucial green shipping management capability and examined its impact on firm performance using survey data collected from container shipping firms, including shipping companies and agencies.
Abstract: This study empirically identifies crucial green shipping management capability and examines its impact on firm performance using survey data collected from container shipping firms, including shipping companies and agencies. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis is performed to identify three critical green shipping management capability dimensions, namely, greener policy, greener ships, and greener suppliers. In this study, firm performance is categorized into environmental performance and financial performance. The results indicate that a greener policy has a direct and positive influence on both the greener ships and the greener suppliers factors. Greener ships and greener suppliers are found to have an indirect and positive influence on financial performance through environmental performance. Accordingly, this study suggests that container shipping managers could focus on organizational green shipping management capability, specifically regarding policies, ships, and suppliers, to improve their...

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors argue that workplace trust as a result of human interaction and personal choice has a bearing on public service motivation (PSM) and test this proposition by using data collected from middle managers working in the Taiwan central government and it receives strong support.
Abstract: The existing literature addressing antecedents of public service motivation (PSM) focuses on personal predisposition and institutional shaping. The authors offer a focus that differs from previous studies, arguing that workplace trust as a result of human interaction and personal choice has a bearing on PSM. It is postulated that public managers' trust in citizens, trust in colleagues, and trust in agency leaders enhance their PSM. The authors test this proposition by using data collected from middle managers working in the Taiwan central government and it receives strong support. This study brings trust into the study of PSM, facilitates interdisciplinary dialogues, and thus helps make PSM a type of knowledge that pushes back the boundaries of public administration.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined the relationship among gratitude, social support, coping style, and well-being and found that gratitude had direct effects on undergraduates' active coping styles.
Abstract: The main purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among gratitude, social support, coping style, and well-being. In total, 750 undergraduate participants completed four inventories measuring the variables of interest. Analyses of structural equation modeling found that gratitude had direct effects on undergraduates’ active coping styles, social support, and well-being. In addition, gratitude had indirect effects on undergraduates’ well-being via an active coping style and social support, and social support had direct effects on undergraduates’ active coping styles. These results support the proposed model of well-being and contribute to the understanding of how gratitude influences undergraduates’ well-being via interpersonal and cognitive variables.
