TL;DR: It was concluded that a short period of maternal hypotension sustained during the initiation of spinal analgesia for Caesarean section was not harmful to the neonate.
Abstract: Summary The effect upon the neonate of a short period of maternal hypotension sustained during the initiation of spinal analgesia for Caesarean section was studied. Babies born to mothers with hypotension were significantly more acidotic than controls although acid-base levels were still within normal limits. Neuro-behavioural studies were found to be normal in both groups at 4 and 24 hours. It was concluded that a short period (<2 minutes) of hypotension was not harmful to the neonate.

TL;DR: In this article, a multiaxial fatigue damage parameter based on the maximum range of shear stress on the critical shear plane allowing for the effect of the range of normal stress occurring on this plane has been used to develop a proposed set of design curves for in-phase bending and torsion which are conservative for the long life out-of-phase case.
Abstract: Test data on fatigue under out-of-phase bending and torsion has been reanalysed. For the materials tested failure has been found to be consistent with the plane of maximum range of maximum range of maximum principal stress, as for the in-phase case. The critical shear planes are assumed to be those associated with this principal stress plane. A multiaxial fatigue damage parameter based on the maximum range of shear stress on the critical shear plane allowing for the effect of the range of normal stress occurring on this plane has been used to develop a proposed set of design curves for in-phase bending and torsion which are conservative for the long life out-of-phase case.

Abstract: Microcomputers have gained popularity as treatment tools after severe head injury but there have been no controlled studies to show if the programmes used can modify behaviour or cognitive improvement. This paper describes a controlled study of such a training programme using three groups of subjects of ten each, one head-injured group using the computer, one head-injured group not using the computer, and a non-head-injured group. The study lasted 4 weeks. The only differences found were in the behavioural aspects of attention. Psychomotor and vigilance were not improved. The reasons for this are discussed.

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to review some of the findings in the field of readability research. First, the differences in meaning between the terms ‘readability’ and ‘legibility’ are discussed. Next, the origins and developments of readability formulas are examined in detail. Then, the best‐known formulas for English language material are described so as to give the reader a brief overview of what has been achieved in this field of research. Finally, the principal applications of these formulas are described.

TL;DR: In this paper, a sufficient condition is derived for the existence of a cascade proper compensator C(s) such that when employed in a unity feedback loop involving the proper transfer function matrix P o of a free of unstable hidden modes system \Sigma(P_{o}), will not only internally stabilize the feedback closed-loop system, but will also give rise to a closed loop transfer function H_{yr}^{diag}, which is nonsingular, diagonal, and has desired poles.
Abstract: We consider the problem of internally stabilizing and simultaneously diagonally decoupling a linear multivariable system by unity output feedback compensation. A sufficient condition is derived for the existence of a cascade proper compensator C(s) such that when employed in a unity feedback loop involving the proper transfer function matrix P o of a free of unstable hidden modes system \Sigma(P_{o}) , will not only internally stabilize the feedback closed-loop system \Sigma(P_{o}, C) but will also give rise to a closed-loop transfer function matrix H_{yr}^{diag} , which is nonsingular, diagonal, and has desired poles. Based on this analysis, an algorithmic procedure for the computation of such a compensator is presented.

Abstract: Racemic gossypol is resolved by HPLC of its amino acid ester Schiff's base derivatives on non-chiral columns. This provides a rapid and accurate method for determination of optical purity on a small scale and, combined with hydrolysis and fractional crystallization, for the preparation of pure gossypol enantiomers on a multi-gram scale.

TL;DR: The results of the study suggest that (1) the isopropyl moiety of the gossypol molecule, like the aldehyde group, is essential for its mechanism of action and (2) the pathognomonic defect in the mitochondrial sheath induced by gOSSypol appears to be related to its unique activity as a male antifertility agent.
Abstract: The effects of fourteen new, orally administered synthetic analogs of gossypol on testicular ultrastructure and fertility in hamsters and the spermicidal properties of these compounds, as well as of the optical isomers of gossypol against hamster and human sperm in vitro, are reported in this study. Test compounds were administered to adult male hamsters by daily gavage for 9 weeks at doses ranging from 15 to 50 mg/kg. The results of this study have demonstrated that the fourteen new gossypol analogs evaluated herein are not effective as male antifertility agents and their in vitro activity or lack of activity as spermicides is unrelated to their in vivo contraceptive potential. In addition, the results of the study suggest that (1) the isopropyl moiety of the gossypol molecule, like the aldehyde group, is essentialfor its mechanism of action and (2) the pathognomonic defect in the mitochondrial sheath induced by gossypol appears to be related to its unique activity as a male antifertility agent. The significance of these findings is discussed.

Abstract: The timing and patterns of death following the stressful event of conjugal bereavement are analyzed for England and Wales using a one percent sample of the total population in the OPCS Longitudinal Study for the period 1971-1981. "Overall the mortality of widowers was about 10% in excess of that in all males in the sample whereas that of widows was only slightly raised. Some increases in death rates shortly after widow(er)hood are observed. Unusually these increases in all-cause mortality rates are more marked in widows than in widowers with a two-fold increase in mortality from all causes in the first month after widowhood. Marked peaks of post-bereavement mortality from accidents and violent causes are clear in both sexes. Possible explanations for the increased mortality rates are examined." (EXCERPT)

TL;DR: In this paper, a boundary-layer approximation is used to describe the convective regime in a laterally heated vertical slot at large Prandtl numbers, subject to appropriate boundary conditions on each of the four walls.
Abstract: A boundary-layer approximation is used to describe the convective regime in a laterally heated vertical slot at large Prandtl numbers. The determination of the core flow requires the solution of the vertical boundary-layer equations in a rectangle, subject to appropriate boundary conditions on each of the four walls. Solutions based on a spectral decomposition in the vertical direction allow a comparison with experimental and numerical results, and an appraisal of an approximate solution frequently used as a basis for stability studies. Both the numerical results and an approximate stability argument lead to a simple criterion for the appearance of multiple rolls in the slot which appears to be in good agreement with experiments.

Abstract: This paper summarizes the state-of-the-art of software reliability assessment, and briefly outlines several of the better-known software reliability models within a framework defined recently by D Miller and C T Gray. It also contains a guide to several arguments now going on concerning the validity of the whole approach, and a brief note about practical experience with software reliability models, though its main thrust is theoretical. It is intended to be readable by the novice, and also provide a map of the area for the experienced software engineer and reliability theoretician.

TL;DR: Parents rated themselves significantly more confident in looking after their child immediately following the weekend, although ratings of perceived difficulty in managing the child's diabetes did not alter.
Abstract: A weekend group was organized for parents of children with diabetes with the aim of teaching them an approach to identifying and tackling common problems. A total of 97 parents of 85 children participated. The effectiveness of the weekend was evaluated and measures were taken before, immediately following and 3 months afterwards. Parents rated themselves significantly more confident in looking after their child immediately following the weekend. although ratings of perceived difficulty in managing the child's diabetes did not alter. Three months later parents' confidence had further increased, although as before perceived difficulty was unchanged. The majority of parents reported making at least some changes either in daily management or other aspects of coping with their child's diabetes. Participation in such short-term groups represents an efficient approach to increasing the confidence of parents of children with a chronic illness.
