Abstract: As a continuation of our previous work on the abundance gradient in the outer part of the galactic disc, this paper presents results on the metallicicty distribution over galactocentric distances up to 15 kpc The outer disc is clearly separated from the middle part by the existence of a step in the metallicity distribution at about 10 kpc Taking the region of galactocentric distances from 10 kpc to 15 kpc, one can derive an iron gradient $-003 \pm 001$ dex kpc -1 (25 stars) The existence of a discontinuity can be caused by the effective suppression of mixing processes near the corotation circle where the radial component of the gas velocity should be very small

Abstract: Two forms of the transverse energy circulation within plane-polarized paraxial light beams are specified: one inherent in wave-front singularities (optical vortices) and the other peculiar to astigmatism and asymmetry of beams with a smooth wave front. As quantitative measures of these energy flow components, the concepts of vortex and asymmetry parts of a beam's orbital angular momentum are introduced and their definitions are proposed on the basis of beam intensity moments. The properties and physical meaning of these concepts are analyzed, and their use for the study of transformations of optical vortices is demonstrated.

Abstract: Summary Candidate gene strategy has been proposed to direct the search for quantitative trait loci, and polymorphisms at these loci have been associated with several production traits in bovine. A total of 211 animals resulting from crosses between Nelore females with sires from either Aberdeen Angus, Canchim and Simmental breeds were analyzed for restriction fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) in the κ-casein, β-lactoglobulin (LGB) and growth hormone GH genes. Average daily gain from birth to weaning (GBW) and from weaning to yearling (GWY) were analyzed by a statistical model comprising RFLP genotypes and their interaction effects. Significant effects (p < 0.05) of growth hormone (GH) and of the interaction β-lactoglobulin × GH were verified for the GWY. Animals with LL genotypes for GH had higher GBW than LV animals but lower GWY (p < 0.05). Zusammenfassung Kandidatengene fur Wachstum in Fleischrinderkreuzungen Bos taurus × Bos indicus Fur die direkte Suche nach QTLs ist der Kandidatengen-Ansatz eine Moglichkeit und Polymorphismen in diesen Genen zeigen Assoziationen zu Produktionsmerkmalen beim Rind auf. Insgesamt wurden 211 Tiere aus Kreuzungen zwischen Nelore-Kuhen und Aberdeen Angus-, Canchim- oder Simmental-Bullen fur die Analyse von RFLPs im κ-Kasein, β-Laktoglobulin (LGB) und Wachstumshormon (GH) verwendet. Die durchschnittliche tagliche Zunahme von der Geburt bis zum Absetzen (GBW) und vom Absetzen bis zum Alter von einem Jahr (GWY) wurden durch ein statistisches Modell unter Berucksichtigung der RFLP-Genotypen und deren Interaktionen analysiert. Signifikante Effekte (p < 0,05) von GH und die Interaktion β-LGB × GH wurden fur GWY verifiziert. Tiere mit dem Genotyp GH × LL hatten hohere GBWs als LV-Tiere, jedoch niedrigere GWY (p < 0,05).

Abstract: We report what is to our knowledge the first all-optical detection of the frequency beats between Gaussian and Laguerre–Gaussian LG01 modes in their axial superposition, caused by the rotational Doppler effect. The relation between the observable off-axis optical vortex rotation and the rotational frequency shift of the Laguerre–Gaussian component is ascertained. The results can be used as a physical basis for recognition of Laguerre–Gaussian mode spectra along their orbital angular momenta.

Abstract: We present precise relative radial velocity (RV) measurements for the rapidly oscillating Ap (roAp) star 33 Librae measured from high-resolution data spanning the wavelength interval 5000–6200 A. We find that the pulsational radial velocity amplitude determined over a broad wavelength range (≈100 A) depends on the spectral region that is examined and can be as high as 60 m s−1 at 5600 A and as low as 7 m s−1 in the 5900 A region. RV measurements of individual spectral lines can show higher amplitudes than results obtained using a ‘broad-band’ measurement that includes many spectral lines. The acoustic cross-sections of the atmosphere, i.e. the phase and amplitude of the pulsations, as a function of optical depth are found for spectral lines of Ca, Cr, Fe, La, Ce, Gd, Er and Nd. This analysis shows that pulsation phase is variable through the atmosphere and that Nd iii lines pulsate almost 180° out of phase with those of Nd ii features and are formed significantly higher in the stellar atmosphere. This conclusively establishes the presence of at least one radial node to the pulsations in the upper stellar atmosphere. We have estimated that this acoustic node is located above an optical depth log τ < −4.5 and below the level where the Nd iii lines are formed. We also suspect that there may be a second atmospheric node in the lower atmosphere below or at log τ≃−0.9 and close to continuum formation level. The histogram of pulsational phases for all individual spectral features shows a bimodal Gaussian distribution with 17 per cent of the lines having a pulsational phase ≈165° out of phase with most other spectral lines. This is also consistent with the presence of a radial node in the stellar atmosphere. The accumulation of phase due to a running wave component can explain the 165° phase difference as well as the broader width (by a factor of 2) of one of the Gaussian components of the phase distribution. We also found evidence for phase variations as a function of effective Landeg-factors. This may be the influence of magnetic field and magnetic intensification effect on depths of spectral line formation and shows that the magnetic field is controlling the pulsations. Our RV measurements for 33 Lib suggest that we are seeing evidence of vertical structure to the oscillations as well as the influence of the distribution of elements on the stellar surface. We suggest and briefly discuss a new semi-empirical tomographic procedure for mono- and multimode roAp stars that will use acoustic cross-sections obtained on different chemical elements and different pulsation modes for restoring the abundance and acoustic profiles throughout the stellar atmosphere and across the stellar surface.

Abstract: From August, 1996 to December, 1997, 293 of ''dourado'' specimens, Salminus maxillosus (Valencienes, 1840), of various sizes, were caught in Mogi-Guacu River, Emas Falls, for hematologic studies. Total weight (Wt in g) and length (Lt in cm) were taken for each individual animal. Smears were prepared from blood samples and utilized for differential leukocyte counts (lymphocytes, neutrophils, monocytes, eosinophils, special granulocytic cell and immature cells). The mean percentages of leukocytes were determined according to sex and stage of gonadal maturation (immature, in maturation, mature, spent and resting). Significant differences between male and female occurred only for the special granulocytic cell. In analyzing the leukocyte profile during gonadal development, only female showed significant differences in mean percentages of lymphocytes, neutrophils, monocytes and eosinophils.

Abstract: We present the results of a systematic search for pulsating components in Algol-type eclipsing binary systems. A total number of 14 eclipsing binaries with A-F spectral type primary components were observed for 22 nights. We confirmed small-amplitude oscillating features of a recently detected pulsator TW Dra, which has a pulsating period of 0.053 day and a semi-amplitude of about 5 mmag in B-passband. We discovered new pulsating components in two eclipsing binaries of RX Hya and AB Per. The primary component of RX Hya is pulsating with a dominant period of 0.052 day and a semi-amplitude of about 7 mmag. AB Per has also a pulsating component with a period of 0.196 day and a semi-amplitude of about 10 mmag in B-passband. We suggest that these two new pulsators are members of the newly introduced group of mass-accreting pulsating stars in semi-detached Algol-type eclipsing binary systems.

Abstract: Provided herein is an apparatus for scrubbing either acidic or alkaline impurities from gas streams, wherein the gas streams to be scrubbed exist at a pressure which is only slightly higher than ambient pressure. An apparatus according to a preferred form of the invention exists substantially in the shape of a rectangular or cubic solid, having an inlet pipe which is directed to an inner chamber having a wall portion which functions as a manifold, including a plurality of gas conduction tubes in fluid contact with the inner chamber, and into which tubes the gas to be scrubbed enters. The gas to be scrubbed passes through holes in the walls of the gas conduction tubes and contacts a liquid absorbent substance present in the interior confines of the apparatus, which liquid is capable of reacting with one or more impurities in the gas stream, thus eliminating the impurities from the gas stream. The gas stream so treated emerges from the apparatus through a gas outlet provision.

Abstract: We carried out a detailed analysis of spectra of the unique roAp star HD 101065 (Przybylski's star) near the resonance doublet Li I 6708 A, using a most complete line list including all possible transitions between REE levels of the NIST database. Our model calculations were performed under two assumptions: a blend of Li and REE lines, and a blend of REE lines only. They prove that Li lines are present in the range 6707.72−6708.02 A and that the resulting Li abundance is 3.1 dex (in the scale log N(H) = 12.0), while the isotopic ratio 6 Li/ 7 Li is near to 0.3.

Abstract: A non-linear gravitational model with a multidimensional geometry and quadratic scalar curvature is considered. For certain parameter ranges, the extra dimensions are stabilized if the internal spaces have negative constant curvature. As a consequence, the 4-dimensional effective cosmological constant as well as the bulk cosmological constant become negative. The homogeneous and isotropic external space is asymptotically AdS 4 . The connection between the D-dimensional and the 4-dimensional fundamental mass scales sets an additional restriction on the parameters of the considered non-linear models.

Abstract: A alfafa e uma das especies mais frequentemente estudadas do ponto de vista da producao de embrioes somaticos derivados da cultura de tecidos. Neste trabalho, cinco cultivares de alfafa foram analisados com referencia a capacidade de regenerar plantas a partir de culturas de protoplastos via embriogenese somatica. Regeneracao de plantas a partir de protoplastos isolados de folhas da cultivar Rangelander foi obtida usando-se um protocolo definido para embriogenese somatica derivada de suspensoes celulares de alfafa. Em funcao da sua alta eficiencia, recomenda-se o uso deste procedimento para transformacao genetica de alfafa mediada por eletroporacao de protoplastos.

Abstract: The relationship between the structural peculiarities of the hydrogen bond net and the anomalous behavior of density and dielectric permittivity of water is investigated. The degree of ordering in the network of hydrogen bonds is described in terms of the structural functions, among which the most important ones are tetrahedricity and the mean number of hydrogen bonds per molecule. The temperature dependence of the number of hydrogen bonds per molecule is discussed in terms of the analysis of the experimental temperature dependences of density and permittivity of water on the saturation line. The estimated density of hexagonal ice at the melting point is reproduced in terms of the concepts suggested for analysis; the estimate is rather close to the experimental value. Possible applications of the new approach are discussed.

Abstract: We have investigated line profiles in a large sample of Cepheid spectra, and found four stars that show unusual (for Cepheids) line profile structure (bumps or/and asymmetries). The profiles can be phase dependent but the behavior persists over many cycles. The asymmetries are unlikely to be due to the spectroscopic binarity of these stars or the specific velocity field in their atmospheres caused by shock waves. As a preliminary hypothesis, we suggest that the observed features on the line profiles in the spectra of X Sgr, V1334 Cyg, EV Sct and BG Cru can be caused by the non-radial oscillations. It is possible that these non-radial oscillations are connected to resonances between the radial modes (3: d 2, 7: 5o r 10: 0).

Abstract: The rumen fermentative characteristics of Nelore steers grazing Brachiaria Brizantha pastures (Teste), or supplemented during the dry season (Seca), dry and wet seasons (Ano) or with free access to a Leucaena bank (Banco), in a randomized block design with four replications, were evaluated. The dry season supplement had 46.9% CP, 70% rumen degradable, and the wet season supplement, 43.9%CP, 60% degradable. Rumen liquor was collected on August, November, February and May. The molar proportions of propionic acid in the supplemented animals were higher in August in the Ano and Seca treatment, and in the others periods animals in the treatment Ano had greater proportions. Similarly, the acetate:propianate ratio was lower in the supplemented treatments in all periods. The values of N-NH3 showed an interaction between period and treatment, with the animals receiving proteic supplement showing higher values in August (Ano and Seca), February and May (Ano. Urea nitrogen showed an interaction between period and treatment, with supplemented animals showing higher values in August (Ano and Seca), February and May (Ano) than the other treatments, and in November the Ano treatment was higher than Teste only.

Abstract: Atraves do presente trabalho, avaliou-se a eficiencia da climatizacao do ambiente da sala de ordenha (ventilacao ou ventilacao mais aspersao) sobre a producao e composicao do leite (gordura, proteina, lactose) e os niveis plasmaticos de cortisol, triiodotironina (T3) e tiroxina (T4). Foram utilizadas 21 vacas em lactacao, com producao media de 21 kg d-1 de leite, distribuidas em um delineamento inteiramente casualisado. O periodo experimental foi de 90 dias, entre os meses de agosto e outubro. Os tratamentos utilizados foram: 1) sala de espera sem climatizacao - controle (CONTR); 2) sala de espera com ventilacao artificial (V) e 3) sala de espera com ventilacao artificial mais aspersao (VA). Os dados referentes a producao de leite foram coletados diariamente em cada ordenha e, para analise da composicao do leite, coletaram-se amostras semanais. Para a determinacao dos hormonios - cortisol, T3 e T4, foram colhidas amostras de sangue, semanalmente, da veia coccidea. Mediante analises dos dados (ANOVA), verificou-se que nao houve diferenca entre os tratamentos para a producao de leite, que os animais do tratamento V apresentaram maior teor de gordura no leite e, ainda, que os animais do grupo CONTR apresentaram maiores concentracoes hormonais de cortisol, T3 e T4, seguida pelo tratamento VA. Por fim, o tratamento VA proporcionou melhores condicoes de conforto aos animais, porem o tempo de permanencia dos animais na sala de ordenha climatizada (30 min) foi, provavelmente, insuficiente para proporcionar aumento na producao de leite.

Abstract: The aim of the present survey was to evaluate in dairy cattle a sanitary management model for the control and eradication of infectious diseases that affect reproduction, such as Infectious Bovine Rhinotracheitis (IBR), Bovine Virus Diahrroea (BVD), Brucelosis and Leptospirosis. As Tuberculosis is a zoonosis, it was also controlled. In six years under sanitary management measures, aiming at biosecurity, such as control of traffic of animals, artificial insemination using pathogen-free semen and periodic sanitary evaluation of the animals, there was not any case of IBR, BVD, Brucelosis or Tuberculosis. In spite of treatment with streptomycin, the incidence of Leptospirosis rose.

Abstract: The experiment was developed at Instituto de Zootecnia in Sao Jose do Rio Preto, SP, and the objective was to evaluate the digestibility coefficients, the nutrients intake, and the nitrogen balance of diets with 20% of corn silage and 80% of concentrate and 0, 25, 40 and 55% of citrus pulp in total dry matter, replacing corn grain. Eight crossbred lambs, with nine months of age and 34 kg of liveweight, were fed in individual cages, where feces and urine could be separated. During six days, feed, orts, feces and urine were weighed and sampled. The amount of feed offered was the mean of the intake in the last three days of the adaptation period. The experiment consisted of two phases, using the same animals, which were blocked by liveweight. Data were analyzed by regression. There was linear increase in the apparent digestibility coefficients of the crude protein and of the acid detergent fiber with higher levels of citrus pulp. The digestibility coefficients did not differ and means were, respectively: 71.8, 73.3, 77.2, 63.5, and 72.2%, for dry matter, organic matter, ether extract, neutral detergent fiber and hemicellulose. The total digestible nutrients mean was 72.39%. Increasing citrus pulp in the diet caused a linear and significant increase of dry matter and total digestible nutrients intake by day and by metabolic weight. Similar effects were observed for the amount of ingested, absorbed, urinary and retained nitrogen. An increasing proportion of citrus pulp up to 55% of the dietary dry matter, replacing corn grain, resulted in improvement of the fiber utilization and of the efficiency of nitrogen metabolism.

Abstract: We have undertaken a statistical study of the component mass ratios and the orbital eccentricities of WR + O close binary, detached main-sequence (DMS), contact early-type (CE), and semidetached (SD) systems. A comparison of the characteristics of WR + O systems and of DMS, CE, and SD systems has enabled us to draw certain conclusions about the evolutionary paths of WR + O binaries and to demonstrate that up to 90% of all known WR + O binaries formed as a result of mass transfer in massive close O + O binary systems. Since there is a clear correlation between the component masses in SD systems with subgiants, the absence of an anticorrelation between the masses of the WR stars and O stars in WR + O binaries cannot be considered evidence against the formation of WR + O binaries via mass transfer. The spectroscopic transitional orbital period P tr sp corresponding to the transition from nearly circular orbits (e sp<0.1) to elliptical orbits (e sp≥0.1) is ∼14d for WR + O systems and ∼2d–3d for OB + OB systems. The period range in which all WR + O orbits are circular $$(1\mathop d\limits_. 6 \leqslant P \leqslant 14^d )$$ is close to the range for SD systems with subgiants, $$0\mathop d\limits_. 7 \leqslant P \leqslant 15^d $$ . The large difference between the P tr sp values for WR + O and OB + OB systems suggests that a mechanism of orbit circularization additional to that for OB + OB systems at the DMS stage (tidal dissipation of the orbital energy due to radiative damping of the dynamical tides) acts in WR + O binaries. It is natural to suggest mass transfer in the parent O + O binaries as this supplementary orbit-circularization mechanism. Since the transitional period between circular and elliptical orbits for close binaries with convective envelopes and ages of 5×109 years is $$P_{tr} = 12\mathop d\limits_. 4$$ , the orbits of most known SD systems with subgiants had enough time to circularize during the DMS stage, prior to the mass transfer. Thus, for most SD systems, mass transfer plays a secondary role in circularization of their orbits. In many cases, the initial orbital eccentricities of the O + O binary progenitors of WR + O systems are preserved, due to the low viscosity of the O-star envelopes and the short timescale for their nuclear evolution until the primary O star fills its Roche lobe and the mass transfer begins. The mass transfer in the parent O + O systems is short-lived, and the number of orbital cycles during the early mass-transfer stage is relatively low (lower than for the progenitors of SD systems by three or four orders of magnitude). The continued transfer of mass from the less massive to the more massive star after the component masses have become equal leads to the formation of a WR + O system, and the orbit's residual eccentricity increases to the observed value. The increase of the orbital eccentricity is also facilitated by variable radial mass loss via the wind from the WR star in the WR + O system during its motion in the elliptical orbit. The result is that WR + O binaries can have considerable orbital eccentricities, despite their intense mass transfer. For this reason, the presence of appreciable eccentricities among WR + O binaries with large orbital periods cannot be considered firm evidence against mass transfer in the parent O + O binary systems. Only for the WR + O binaries with the longest orbital periods (4 of 35 known systems, or 11 %) can the evolution of the parent O + O binaries occur without filling of the Roche lobe by the primary O star, being governed by radial outflow in the form of the stellar wind and possibly by the LBV phenomenon, as in the case of HD 5980.

Abstract: Foi desenvolvido no Instituto de Zootecnia, em Nova Odessa, SP, um experimento para avaliar 39 variedades de canas-de-acucar, com vistas a alimentacao animal. As canas foram avaliadas atraves de analise sob componentes principais e agrupamento. A analise de agrupamento foi efetuada pelo metodo UPGA (unweighted pair group method with arithimetic average), levando-se em conta, 4 caracteres, producao de materia seca, teor de carboidratos totais nao estruturais, teor de fibra insoluvel em detergente neutro e degradabilidade efetiva da materia seca. Levando-se em conta apenas a qualidade e degradabilidade foram selecionados os grupos 6, 7, 8, 9 e 10. Incluindo na avaliacao, a producao de materia seca, os grupos selecionados foram os de numero 6, 8 e 9.

Abstract: The abundances of 19 chemical elements in the atmospheres of five stars belonging to three globular clusters have been determined by applying the model-atmospheremethod to 430.0–790.0 nm spectra obtained with the echelle spectrometer of the 6-m telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory. The abundances of silicon, calcium, iron-peak elements, copper, zinc, and neutron-capture elements follow the abundance patterns for halo stars. The abundance of sodium in M 10 giants provides evidence that different mixing mechanisms operate in halo and cluster stars or that light elements are enriched in different ways in the pre-stellar matter from which some globular clusters and halo stars were formed.
