TL;DR: Prevalence of sexually transmitted infections in a cohort of HIV-1-infected pregnant women and factors associated with STI diagnosis are investigated, as a nested study within the European Collaborative Study (ECS).
Abstract: We investigated prevalence of sexually transmitted infections (STI) in a cohort of HIV-1-infected pregnant women and described factors associated with STI diagnosis, as a nested study within the European Collaborative Study (ECS). The ECS is a cohort study in which HIV-infected pregnant women are enrolled and their children followed from birth, according to standard clinical and laboratory protocols. Information on STIs diagnosed during pregnancy was collected retrospectively from the antenatal records of women enrolling between January 1999 and October 2005; other variables were obtained from the ECS prospective database. A total of 1,050 women were included: 530 in Western Europe and 520 in Ukraine. Syphilis was the most common bacterial STI (2% prevalence, 95% CI 1.2–3.0). Prevalence of HPV-related genital lesions was 8.6% (95%CI 6.9–10.4) and prevalence of Trichomonas vaginalis was 12.1% (95%CI 10.2–14.2). Women in Ukraine (AOR 10.7, 95%CI 3.7–30.5), single women (AOR 3.9, 95%CI 1.2–12.7), sexual partners of injecting drug users (AOR 3.8, 95%CI 1.4–10.4) and women with CD4 counts <200 cells/mm3 (AOR 5.4, 95%CI 1.0–28.1) were at increased risk of diagnosis with Chlamydia trachomatis, syphilis or Trichomonas vaginalis. African origin (AOR 1.9, 95%CI 1.1–3.3) and CD4 count <200 cells/mm3 (AOR 3.4, 95%CI 1.5–7.8) were associated with HSV-2 and/or HPV-related genital lesions. Antenatal screening should be considered an effective tool for diagnosis, treatment and prevention of further transmission of STIs. HIV-infected women should receive adequate screening for STIs during pregnancy together with appropriate counseling and follow-up for treatment and prevention.

TL;DR: In this article, the present expansion of our universe endowed with relict colored objects (i.e., quarks and gluons) that survived hadronization either as isolated islands of quark-gluon "nuggets" or spread uniformly in the universe is calculated.
Abstract: We calculate the present expansion of our Universe endowed with relict colored objects — quarks and gluons — that survived hadronization either as isolated islands of quark-gluon "nuggets" or spread uniformly in the Universe. In the first scenario, the QNs can play the role of dark matter. In the second scenario, we demonstrate that uniform colored objects can play the role of dark energy providing the late-time accelerating expansion of the Universe.

TL;DR: The results confirm the mixed ancestry of American Creole cattle and the role that African cattle have played in their development.
Abstract: Cattle imported from the Iberian Peninsula spread throughout America in the early years of discovery and colonization to originate Creole breeds, which adapted to a wide diversity of environments and later received influences from other origins, including zebu cattle in more recent years. We analyzed uniparental genetic markers and autosomal microsatellites in DNA samples from 114 cattle breeds distributed worldwide, including 40 Creole breeds representing the whole American continent, and samples from the Iberian Peninsula, British islands, Continental Europe, Africa and American zebu. We show that Creole breeds differ considerably from each other, and most have their own identity or group with others from neighboring regions. Results with mtDNA indicate that T1c-lineages are rare in Iberia but common in Africa and are well represented in Creoles from Brazil and Colombia, lending support to a direct African influence on Creoles. This is reinforced by the sharing of a unique Y-haplotype between cattle from Mozambique and Creoles from Argentina. Autosomal microsatellites indicate that Creoles occupy an intermediate position between African and European breeds, and some Creoles show a clear Iberian signature. Our results confirm the mixed ancestry of American Creole cattle and the role that African cattle have played in their development.

01 Jan 2014TL;DR: A universal Petri net with 14 places, 42 transitions, and 218 arcs was built in the class of deterministic inhibitor Petri nets (DIPNs); it is based on the minimal Turing machine (TM) of Woods and Neary with 6 states, 4 symbols, and 23 instructions, directly simulated by a PetriNet.
Abstract: A universal Petri net with 14 places, 42 transitions, and 218 arcs was built in the class of deterministic inhibitor Petri nets (DIPNs); it is based on the minimal Turing machine (TM) of Woods and Neary with 6 states, 4 symbols, and 23 instructions, directly simulated by a Petri net. Several techniques were developed, including bi-tag system (BTS) construction on a DIPN, special encoding of TM tape by two stacks, and concise subnets that implement arithmetic encoding operations. The simulation using the BTS has cubic time and linear space complexity, while the resulting universal net runs in exponential time and quadratic space with respect to the target net transitions' firing sequence length. The technique is applicable for simulating any TM by the Petri net.
