TL;DR: Experimental and clinical evidence is consistent with the hypothesis that aplastic disease of the marrow in human patients may result from immunological damage to the sinusoidal microcirculation, which would explain the failure of isogeneic transplants to repopulate the marrow of patients with aplastics an˦mia.

TL;DR: Common side effects encountered were hyperthermic reactions, gastrointestinal disturbances, hyperkeratosis and vesiculation of fingers, alopecia, and stomatitis.
Abstract: Bleomycin is an antitumor antibiotic produced by Streptomyces verticillus. Seventy-five patients with various neoplasms were studied using this drug. Fourteen out of 20 patients with epidermoid carcinoma of the head and neck region, 5 out of 14 cases of lymphoma including Hodgkin's disease, 3 out of 6 patients with testicular tumors, and one patient with lymphangiosarcoma of the arm showed evidence of objective regression. Common side effects encountered were hyperthermic reactions, gastrointestinal disturbances, hyperkeratosis and vesiculation of fingers, alopecia, and stomatitis. Pulmonary fibrosis is a rare but serious complication. One patient in this series died of this complication. There was no evidence of bone marrow, liver, or renal toxicity. Bleomycin promises to be a useful therapeutic agent and merits further study.

TL;DR: This observation supports the concept that tardive dyskinesias are related to hypersensitivity of dopaminergic receptors to dopamine and is suggested that Levodopa should be avoided in patients with neuroleptic-induced lingual-facial-buccal Dyskinesia.

TL;DR: The data suggest that sodium diatrizoate has a negative inotropic effect on left ventricular myocardium by the third cardiac cycle after injection, and this should be derived from the first 2 cardiac cycles after opacification.
Abstract: Seven selective left ventricular angiocardiograms that permitted measurement of end-diastolic volume for 5 consecutive cardiac cycles were analyzed. Neither end-diastolic volume nor end-systolic volume changed significantly between the first and second cycles after ventricular opacification. A progressive increase in the major and minor ventricular semiaxes occurred beginning with the third opacified cycle. Correspondingly, the average end-diastolic volume and end-systolic volume increased by 6.9 ml and 3.4 ml, respectively, between the second and third cardiac cycles. Ventricular volumes progressively increased between the third and fifth cardiac cycles in each patient. These data suggest that sodium diatrizoate has a negative inotropic effect on left ventricular myocardium by the third cardiac cycle after injection. Physiologic information from cineangiocardiography should be derived from the first 2 cardiac cycles after opacification.

TL;DR: An intravenous bolus injection of mithramycin was given to patients with malignancy‐related hypercalcemia persisting after hydmtion, and in most instances a gradual but steady fall in the serum calcium occurred within the next 48 hours, accompanied by a fall in serum inorganic phosphate and 24 hour urinary calcium excretion.
Abstract: An intravenous bolus injection of mithramycin (25 μg per kilogram) was given to patients with malignancy‐related hypercalcemia persisting after hydmtion. In most instances a gradual but steady fall in the serum calcium occurred within the next 48 hours, accompanied by a fall in serum inorganic phosphate and 24 hour urinary calcium excretion. Patients with head and neck cancer, cancer of the lung, and multiple myeloma were somewhat less responsive as a group than patients with cancer of the breast or kidney. Aside from transient nausea and vomiting, side effects were minimal. Small doses of mithramycin inhibit bone resorption; dactinomycin and other RNA inhibitors block the action of vitamin D in vitro. The hypocalcemia following administration of these agents may be an expression of their antivitamin D action.

TL;DR: The localization of chick embryonic lysozyme was determined by studying the rate of release from the tissue during sequential enzymatic digestion and by immunocytochemistry, indicating that, in this tissue, ly sozyme is primarily extra-cellular.
Abstract: The localization of chick embryonic lysozyme was determined by two techniques: by studying the rate of release from the tissue during sequential enzymatic digestion and by immunocytochemistry. Both techniques indicate that, in this tissue, lysozyme is primarily extra-cellular. Cartilage lysozyme was isolated and partially characterized and found to be identical with egg white lysozyme in its immunologic and enzymatic behavior. In addition, a method for the isolation of large numbers of viable chondrocytes is described.

TL;DR: An impaired response to both PHA and tumour cells was noted in patients with florid tumours, a form thought to be associated with a diminished host response.
Abstract: This study describes a correlation between the morphologic types of cutaneous Kaposi's sarcomata and the capacity of lymphocytes to be stimulated in culture with PHA and tumour cells. Lymphocytes from patients with the sarcoma and from normal controls were cultured in vitro with PHA, autologous Mitomycin-inhibited tumour cells, and control cells. Lymphocyte transformation was evaluated by measuring the uptake of 125 iodo-2′ deoxyuridine. Lymphocytes from seven of 21 Kaposi patients showed increased transformation in cultures containing tumour cells and six of these seven patients had nodular or infiltrative disease. An impaired response to both PHA and tumour cells was noted in patients with florid tumours, a form thought to be associated with a diminished host response. Standardized extracts of tumour and control cells were incubated with homologous lymphocytes from other Kaposi patients and normal controls. Two of nine cultures from Kaposi patients showed increased isotope uptake, compared with none of three control cultures.

TL;DR: A patient is described who developed hepatocellular jaundice after methyldopa was administered, and this exacerbation, along with transient arthritis, antinuclear antibodies and positive LE cell tests, document this as a case of hepatotoxicity due to methYldopa.
Abstract: A patient is described who developed hepatocellular jaundice after methyldopa was administered. When the drug was again prescribed, hepatitis recurred. This exacerbation, along with transient arthritis, antinuclear antibodies and positive LE cell tests, document this as a case of hepatotoxicity due to methyldopa.

TL;DR: Lysozyme, a particulate-associated enzyme in other tissues, was not detected in any subcellular fraction even by the sensitive technique of microzone electrophoresis and is therefore considered to be primarily extracellular in cartilage.
Abstract: Some characteristic enzymatic activities were determined in chick embryonic cartilage and compared with the analogous activities in bone and liver. Chondrocytes were isolated, broken by sonication, and subjected to subcellular fractionation to yield a nuclear pellet, the mitochondrial, lysosomal, and microsomal fractions, and the high speed supernatant solution. It was established that these fractions are characterized by enzymatic activities usually associated with similar fractions in other tissues, but with some quantitative differences. Lysozyme, a particulate-associated enzyme in other tissues, was not detected in any subcellular fraction even by the sensitive technique of microzone electrophoresis and is therefore considered to be primarily extracellular in cartilage.

TL;DR: The linear-nonlinear-linear transition occurring over the entire bandwidth of the frog retinal system is explained in terms of a two-component model.
Abstract: The frog retinal response to light is obtained in the frequency domain. The response is obtained by means of a capillary-type electrode at the cornea. Sinusoidal stimuli are used. The very low frequency range (0.01 to 1 Hz.) is examined. With decreasing frequency, retinal gain increases and the response is more nearly sinusoidal. The increase in sensitivity is thought to result from rod enhancement. The linear-nonlinear-linear transition occurring over the entire bandwidth of the frog retinal system is explained in terms of a two-component model.

TL;DR: Catecholamines stimulate brain hexokinase when Mg 2+ and H + concentration levels are suboptimal and the concentration of the phosphate acceptor ( glucose or 2-deoxyglucose) exceeds the half-saturation level, suggesting a physiologic control mechanism for Hexokinase in which tissue levels of Mg2+, H + and glucose serve as metabolic signals.

TL;DR: The chances of adverse emotional side reactions to L‐dopa appear to be minimal when the dosage level does not exceed 4 Gm.
Abstract: This paper reports a study, using systematic observation, interview, and psychological examination, in a sample of 34 patients receiving L‐dopa for parkinsonism. Our results do not support the suggestion that disturbances of mood and behavior are to be expected. We concluded that the chances of adverse emotional side reactions to L‐dopa appear to be minimal when the dosage level does not exceed 4 Gm. per day and the subjects are emotionally stable prior to treatment.
