TL;DR: In this paper, a parametric study is conducted to study the influence of important system parameters on the response behavior of damper connected structures, such as excitation frequency, mass ratio, and stiffness ratio of the structure.
Abstract: In this paper, the dynamic behavior of two identical adjacent structures connected with viscous dampers is investigated under base acceleration. The base acceleration is modeled as harmonic excitation as well as stationary white-noise random process. Each adjacent structure is modeled as a two-degree-of-freedom system. The governing differential equations of motion of the coupled system are derived and solved for relative displacement and absolute acceleration responses. A parametric study is conducted to study the influence of important system parameters on the response behavior of damper connected structures. The important parameters considered are excitation frequency, mass ratio, and stiffness ratio of the structure. It is observed that the viscous damper is quite effective in controlling the dynamic response of identical connected structures. For a given coupled structure and excitation, it is found that there exists an optimum value of damping coefficient of damper for which the peak responses under harmonic excitation and the mean square response quantities under stationary white-noise excitation attain the minimum value. The close-form expressions for optimum parameter and corresponding response are derived for an undamped system. Finally, it is observed that the damping ratio of the connected structures does not have noticeable effects on the optimum damper damping. This implies that the proposed close-form expressions of undamped structures can be used for the damped connected structures as well. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors analyzed and reexamine the Altman Z score and used various ratios from Altman's Z score to divide sample firms into healthy and unstable among BSE-30 companies.
Abstract: In the era of globalization, prediction of financial distress is of interest not only to managers but also to external stakeholders of a company. The stakeholders are continuously seeking the optimal solution for performance forecasting, as a way to rationalize the decision-making process. The recent past shows that financial stability of companies is at the stake. Stockholders, Managers, Creditor and employees of the business are always concerned about financial stability of the companies. The most frequently tool for financial analysis is financial ratios. However, financial ratios are no-longer proved appropriate for ‘Stockholders’ equity position and creditors’ claims. Stakeholder’s have concerns about the consequences of financial distress for companies, and controls of capital adequacy through the regulatory capital requirement (Mingo, 2000). This shared interest creates persistent investigations and continuing attempts to answer an incessant question that how financial distress can be predicted, or what reveals the credit risk of firms. For this purpose most commonly used tool is Altman Z score, but due to nature of the explanatory variables, financial distress prediction research has not reached an unequivocal conclusion. The primary goal of this paper is to analyze and reexamine the Altman Z score. In order to facilitate the current research, various ratios were taken from Altman’s Z score. To fulfill our objective Z score ratios were used to divide sample firms into healthy and unstable among BSE-30 companies. First the Z score is calculated for 10 companies selected for this purpose for a period of 5 years each. And then it is divided as per z scores, later the significant in the changes in the ratio is calculated with the help of One sample Komogrov-Smirnow test, which resulted that the change in the z scores is not significant in case of all the companies.

TL;DR: In this article, the performance of envelope detection with fast Fourier transform (FFT) and continuous wavelet transform (CWT) of vibration signals produced from a bearing with defects on inner race and rolling element, have been examined at low signal to noise ratio.
Abstract: Fault diagnosis of rolling element bearings requires efficient signal processing techniques. For this purpose, the performances of envelope detection with fast Fourier transform (FFT) and continuous wavelet transform (CWT) of vibration signals produced from a bearing with defects on inner race and rolling element, have been examined at low signal to noise ratio. Both simulated and experimental signals from identical bearings have been considered for the purpose of analysis. The bearings have been modeled as spring-mass-dashpot systems and the simulated signals have been obtained considering transfer functions for the bearing systems subjected to impulsive loads due to the defects. Frequency B spline wavelets have been applied for CWT and a discussion on wavelet selection has been presented for better effectiveness. Results show that use of CWT with the proposed wavelets overcomes the short coming of FFT while processing a noisy vibration signals for defect detection of bearings.

TL;DR: This paper described all the features extraction mechanism for the SOM input and devised an algorithm for creating the clusters of the raga based on their PCP (pitch class profiles) and the onsets detected and provided the future possibilities for the enhancements.
Abstract: This paper is mainly focusing the aspects regarding the Self organized maps in the recognition of the Ragas and the strategy behind the Digital signal processing for the raga recognition and clustering of the same. Paper mainly describes all the features extraction mechanism for the SOM input and we devised an algorithm for creating the clusters of the raga based on their PCP (pitch class profiles) and the onsets detected. Our strategy is very promising that its providing better clusters of the raga patterns and the raga segments are very much clearly be distinguished from the other ragas, as we compared them with the formation of the key attributes. The Indian classical music history is very old and the need for identifying the music based on the raga onsets is very much helping for the music professionals and domestic users for identifying and detecting the raga types and using the same without the help or availability of any experts nearby. Thus our strategy is very promising in nature for the novice users and practitioners as well as home users. The very early learners would also find it very interesting and supportive after due course of frequent uses of it. At last we provided the future possibilities for the enhancements.

TL;DR: This paper investigates a static index pruning approach which is useful to reduce the index size and finds that for specific collections, the proposed model gives better precision values for the retrieval of top 30 and above documents.
Abstract: Information Retrieval deals with retrieving documents from a large collection that matches the information need of a user. Efficient retrieval is based on the proper storage of the inverted index. There have been many techniques for reducing the size of the inverted index. Static index pruning is one such technique, which is used to reduce the index size. This paper investigates a static index pruning approach which is useful to reduce the index size. The proposed approach prunes the entire document from the index based on its importance and relevance of top-k results. The elimination takes place on the basis of the score of the individual document. Experiments have been conducted on the FIRE text collection. Based on the results, it was found that for specific collections, the proposed model gives better precision values for the retrieval of top 30 and above documents.

TL;DR: A detailed analysis of success stories of seven companies from different sectors viz. FMCG, banking, healthcare, transportation, and online selling is presented in this article, where case studies were developed and critically analyzed on the basis of their objectives of implementing Analytics, tools that were adopted, results achieved and success factors leading to their enhanced performance.
Abstract: Business analytics has proven itself as a high business performance tool that can be applied to multiple divisions of an enterprise and creates a fact based culture across the organisation. The use of Quantitative analysis, predictive models and statistical tools helps the business managers in gaining a different view of the data, and deriving maximum value out of it, which in turn contributes towards improved decision making and problem solving in an organisation. However, it has been observed that despite the several benefits that are anticipated with Business Analytics adoption, very few have achieved proficiency in its implementations and organizations are facing adoption barriers, most of them being management and culture related rather than being data and technology related. The present study was undertaken to bridge this gap between the highly proclaimed business benefits of Analytics and the problems faced by organizations in successfully implementing this tool. It presents a detailed analysis of success stories of 7 companies from different sectors viz. FMCG, banking, healthcare, transportation and online selling, who have capitalized on this tool. Case studies were developed and critically analysed on the basis of their objectives of implementing Analytics, tools that were adopted, results achieved and success factors leading to their enhanced performance. The results lead to identification of factors that contribute towards successful implementation of Business Analytics for enhancing the performance of companies from various industries and also companies with varied capital structures. This research also helps in critically analysing various factors that are pulling a company away from implementing the analytical models. Considering the various dimensions of successfully implementing analytics in organizations, as identified through the study, we also propose a roadmap for successful implementation of business analytics. The findings from the study will help organizations in proactively finding a solution to counter adoption barriers that are generally faced during use of analytics and learning from the best practices of the industry.

TL;DR: In this paper, an investigation has been made to estimate the load on a rolling element in a bearing subjected to dynamic loading, in the present study, included harmonic and periodic loadings which are deterministic functions of time.
Abstract: External load in a bearing is transferred from one race to another race through the rolling elements. In the present work, an investigation has been made to estimate the load on a rolling element in a bearing subjected to dynamic loading. The dynamic loading, in the present study, included harmonic and periodic loadings which are deterministic functions of time. The roller load is also investigated under random loading with known statistical values of mean and variance. Numerical values have been obtained for NJ204 bearing with known radial clearance. These results show the variation in the spectra obtained for different nature of external loadings. These results can be expected to satisfy the difference in theoretical and experimental spectra obtained by earlier researchers.

Abstract: In today's world the music professionals are facing challenges when they want to practice on any song. The challenge is that the instrumentalists are not available at all times to accompany them. Thus there is an increase demand of the karaoke systems that can generate the instrumental music without having the vocals. This creates a significant need to develop such kind of systems. In this paper we are proposing an efficient approach that helps in creating the karaoke of any song and removes the vocal part from any song. Lots of researchers are focusing on using different aspects, we propose the LPF Technique that is exploited to separate the vocal and the instrumental portion from the song clip. As there is room for additional improvements for the system, the proposed technique is useful and easy to use with the proven validations. The strategy uses the matlab programming environment and the filtering techniques. Using the Matlab GUI one working prototype has been proposed that helps user to create the karaoke which is the vocal separated instrumental only.

TL;DR: In this paper, a graphical and mathematical approach based maximum power angle determination mechanism is adopted to determine the angle made from the intersection point of open circuit voltage and short circuit current with respect to the voltage (V) axis to the point of maximum power (MPP) using the known parameters of the solar PV module.
Abstract: A novel maximum power angle (MPA) based maximum power point tracking (MPPT) technique is reported. In this technique, a graphical and mathematical approach based maximum power angle determination mechanism is adopted. On the I-V characteristic curve, the angle made from the intersection point of open circuit voltage (V OC ) and short circuit current (I SC ) with respect to the voltage (V) axis to the point of maximum power (MPP) is determined using the known parameters of the solar PV module. The proposed MPPT technique is able to minimize the dependency on various voltage and current sensor requirements, thereby the reduced requirement of hardware components. Due to this fact, the implementation cost of this technique is expected low and maintenance needs of such technique based MPPT system would be also minimized.

TL;DR: The proposed work will tolerate any crash failure of processes in system and reduce the load on sequencer (by providing an opportunity to each process to be a sequencer) and introduction of crash tolerance in second refined version.
Abstract: This article investigates a novel mechanism of atomic broadcast in distributed systems. Various mechanisms are already given for moving sequencer based atomic broadcast like RMP [1], DTP [2] and Pin Wheel [3]. Since all these mechanisms are built on broadcast broadcast (BB) variant [4] of fixed sequencer atomic broadcast hence introduce a very large number of messages [4]. Here we propose a novel mechanism that works on unicast broadcast (UB) invariant of fixed sequencer atomic broadcast in order to build moving sequencer atomic broadcast. The proposed mechanism relies on unicast broadcast hence it will introduce a very less number of messages in comparison to previous mechanisms [4]. Along with broadcast any process may get crash any time. Hence, system must be so efficient such that it can tolerate such crashes and maintains normal behavior so that reliability of system will be maintained. The proposed work will tolerate any crash failure of processes in system and reduce the load on sequencer (by providing an opportunity to each process to be a sequencer). We have used B [5] as formal technique for development of our model. B uses set theory as a modeling notation, refinements to represent system at different abstraction level. We have used Pro B [19] model checker and animator for constraint based checking, discover errors due to invariant violation and deadlocks, thereby, validating the specifications. We present an abstract model specifying atomic broadcast with a fixed sequencer and introducing moving sequencer in first refined version then introduction of crash tolerance in second refined version.

Abstract: Vibration signal of a defective bearing carries fault related information. The aim of this paper is to develop a signal processing methodology that identifies the presence of defect from bearing vibration signal subjected high background noise. A simulated vibration signal considering inner race defect in a deep groove ball bearing with low signal to noise ratio has been generated and investigated. A technique involving CWT of vibration signal and post-processing though FFT has been adopted to analyze the signal. Results show that proposed methodology can yield the presence of inner race defect prominently from a noisy vibration signal.

Abstract: Data compression algorithms are used to reduce the redundancy, storage requirement and efficiently reduce communication costs. Data Encryption is used to protect our data from unauthorized users. Due to the unprecedented explosion in the amount of digital data transmitted via the Internet, it has become necessary to develop a compression algorithm that can effectively use available network bandwidth and also taking into account the security aspects of the compressed data transmitting over Internet. This paper presents an encoding technique that offers high compression ratios. An intelligent and reversible transformation technique is applied to source text to improve the capability of algorithms to compress the transmitted data. The results prove that the proposed method performs better than many other popular techniques with respected to compression ratio and the speed of compression and requires some additional processing on the server/nodes.

TL;DR: A novel technique for static index pruning based on document relevance with chi square scoring is presented, which increases the Precision for pruning level 60 and above for the top-30 documents retrieval.
Abstract: In this study, a novel technique for static index pruning based on document relevance with chi square scoring is presented. The term presents in the document are score using the chi-square statistical method. It takes into account the term's occurrences and the expected frequency in the document. The expected frequency is estimated by the term's entropy and the dispersion value of the document. During the computation of document score, the associated terms are averaged by their chi-square based score. The performance of the proposed algorithm is tested on the FIRE 2010 dataset. Experimental results show that the proposed approach increases the Precision for pruning level 60 and above for the top-30 documents retrieval.

TL;DR: In this article, different active and passive solar energy harnessing techniques have been discussed, analysed and recommended leading to zero energy buildings (ZEBs) in urban and peri-urban areas.
Abstract: Solar energy utilisation is the most important energy resource for bridging the gap between demand and supply of various energy needs in urban and peri-urban areas. The energy consumption is basically in terms of electricity for many appliances and equipment in homes, thermal energy for heating and cooling in homes and passive solar architecture for energy efficient buildings. On the other hand, the conventional energy consumption also induces the ecological imbalance such as the generation of greenhouse gases. Therefore solar energy may be considered an environmentally friendly alternative energy source for sustainable development. In this chapter, different active and passive solar energy harnessing techniques have been discussed, analysed and recommended leading to zero energy buildings (ZEBs) in urban and peri-urban areas. Here the study of solar energy applications for all types of energy needs in a residential building for advanced, ecological and smart liveability is presented. In this Chapter, we suggest some effective ways to harvest solar energy in urban and peri-urban areas using active and passive solar techniques.

TL;DR: A static index pruning method for phrase queries which is based on the cohesive similarity between terms which creates an effective pruned index and can be applies to standard inverted index for phrase query also.
Abstract: This paper proposes a static index pruning method for phrase queries which is based on the cohesive similarity between terms. The co-occurrence between terms is model by term's cohesiveness within document. The less relevant terms gets pruned away while assuring that there is no change in the top-k results. The proposed method creates an effective pruned index. This method also considers the term proximity based on the term frequency and the terms informative ness. The experiments were conducted on a number of different standard text collections, and analysis of the results shows promising results and is comparable with the existing static pruning method. It is an advantage of the proposed approach that it can be applies to standard inverted index for phrase queries also.
