TL;DR: A spectrophotometric method which eliminates interference due to nucleic acid absorbance has been developed for determining protein concentration over the range of 5 to 180 μg/ml and the results obtained have been compared to those obtained with the Folin-Lowry and microbiuret methods.

TL;DR: The intensive systemic administration of antileukemic agents resulted in longer complete remissions than described in other studies, and survival was at least equal to that obtained with sequential use of these agents.

TL;DR: Deoxycholate disrupted virions of Newcastle disease virus (NDV), releasing viral nucleocapsids, which contained all the 50S ribonucleic acid (RNA) in NDV virions, while virus-associated RNA sedimenting at less than 50S was external to the virions.
Abstract: Deoxycholate (DOC) disrupted virions of Newcastle disease virus (NDV), releasing viral nucleocapsids. The nucleocapsids sedimented at about 200S in sucrose gradients and measured from 1.3 to 1.4 μ long by electron microscopy. NDV nucleo-capsids were resistant to pancreatic ribonuclease. These nucleocapsids contained all the 50S ribonucleic acid (RNA) in NDV virions, while virus-associated RNA sedimenting at less than 50S was external to the virions.

TL;DR: The volume of intracranial contents can be fairly accurately computed from measurements on plain skull films and the fact that the vault was not thickened at that time would suggest that brain growth was not previously grossly retarded, and it is important to remember that microcephaly does not preclude chronic subdural fluid coIlections.

TL;DR: A mutant of Bacillus subtilis 168 (strain 168 KL), which had lost its normal capacity to accumulate K(+), was used to explore the interrelationship between protein and ribonucleic acid (RNA) synthesis.
Abstract: A mutant of Bacillus subtilis 168 (strain 168 KL), which had lost its normal capacity to accumulate K+, was used to explore the interrelationship between protein and ribonucleic acid (RNA) synthesis. In contrast to the wild type, the growth rate of strain 168 KL was markedly dependent on the K+ concentration in the medium. K+ uptake in the mutant strain was identical to that in the parent, but the mutant was unable to retain and accumulate K+. Protein synthesis was markedly dependent on the K+ concentration in the medium, whereas RNA synthesis was relatively unaffected by changes in the level of K+. Most of the RNA synthesized during K+ depletion was ribosomal RNA; it appeared in crude extracts in the form of ribonucleoproteins particles with sedimentation values between 4S and 30S. These particles were converted into mature ribosomes when growth was allowed to resume by the addition of K+. Simultaneous synthesis of RNA and protein was necessary for the quantitative conversion of the ribonucleoprotein particles into ribosomes. During recovery from K+ depletion, ribosomal protein was synthesized in preference to the other proteins of the cell.

TL;DR: Triglyceride, cholesterol and cholesteryl ester concentrations in the cord serum of 10 infants were determined and found to be considerably lower than in the mother9s serum.
Abstract: Triglyceride, cholesterol and cholesteryl ester concentrations in the cord serum of 10 infants were determined and found to be considerably lower than in the mother9s serum. The fatty acid compositions of the cord serum triglycerides and cholesteryl esters were significantly different from those of the mothers. The linoleate fraction of these esters was especially low. Plasma triglyceride concentrations in full-term, healthy infants rose significantly 9 hours after birth. The fatty acid distribution of these triglycerides at 12 hours varied from that at birth; this difference was also reflected in reported plasma free fatty acids and suggests a precursory relationship. The plasma total cholesterol concentrations did not alter in the first 12 hours, nor did the fatty acid distribution of the cholesteryl esters change significantly. A method to measure low concentrations of triglycerides in small samples is described. The differences between maternal and cord serum lipids suggest that fetal lipids do not originate directly in the mother. The rise in plasma triglycerides is part of an increased fat mobilization occurring after birth.

TL;DR: A frog virus originally isolated by Rafferty from the urine of a frog bearing a Lucke renal adenocarcinoma has been cultivated and partially characterized and electron microscopic examination of infected cells reveals a nuclear site of virus synthesis.

TL;DR: Chick embryo sympathetic chains were grown in tissue culture and pulse labelled with tritiated catecholamines and the capability of these cells to take up radioactive dopamine and norepinephrine from the culture media was retained after one month in tissueculture.
Abstract: — Chick embryo sympathetic chains were grown in tissue culture and pulse labelled with tritiated catecholamines. The uptake was restricted to sympathetic nerve cells. The capability of these cells to take up radioactive dopamine and norepinephrine from the culture media was retained after one month in tissue culture. The uptakes of both [3H]norepinephrine and [3H]dopamine were inhibited when nonradioactive DOPA, dopamine, norepinephrine or epinephrine were present in the pulse media.

TL;DR: An automatic electronic device has been designed for sectioning cylindrieal analytical polyacrylamide gels while maintaining them in a rigid state at low temperature and the relative specific radioactivity of different protein bands can be estimated by comparing the counts per gel section with the intensity of the protein stain.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: This study lends support to the idea that peptidyl-tRNA can stabilize the polysome complex, and indicates that free ribosomes are not solely involved in the inhibition of stable RNA synthesis under all conditions.

TL;DR: Improved spectrophotometric and thin-layer chromatographic methods for the rapid determination of RNA nucleotide composition were described and the nucleotide compositions of yeast RNA and 32 P-labeled chick embryo fibroblast cell RNA were determined with a high degree of accuracy and were found to agree with previously reported values.
