The optimal layout design for minimizing operating costs in a picker-to-part warehousing system

Abstract: The decision problems in the design and control of warehousing order picking process include layout design, storage assignment, routing, and order batching policies. Previous researches on layout design for pick-and-pass systems are not abundant. However, a pick-and-pass system is a commonly used approach because of the growth of e-commerce and the faster delivery of small and frequent orders. This paper presents an algorithm to determine the number of zones, and the number of picking bins and racks in each zones for the pick-and-pass systems such that both investment and operational costs can be minimized. A cycle time evaluation model is developed and incorporated into the proposed algorithm to aid a warehouse designer to quickly evaluate design alternatives for warehouse configurations. The result indicates that the cycle time evaluation model appears to be sufficiently accurate for practical purpose and the optimal layout can be determined by the proposed algorithm.

Preparing Statement of Cash Flows from Taoist Perspectives

Abstract: The preparation of cash-flow statement under the indirect method involves adjustments of many items. This is a highly complex process prone to errors, due to a lack of philosophical guidance. This paper finds that the concept of natural equilibrium of Chinese Taoism “...is the way of heaven to take from what has in excess in order to make good what is deficient...” can lend intellectual support to the preparation of cash flows statement under the indirect method. This approach will greatly enhance the accuracy of cash flows statement under the indirect method. This paper uses examples to illustrate the process of adjustments in the preparation of cash- flow statement under the indirect method in the context of Taoist philosophy. The results show that the philosophical perspectives of Chinese Taoism can provide strong guidance on these adjustments by achieving both efficiency and efficacy. The assurance of this “win-win” is a testimony to the philosophical contents of Taoism in the context of modern times.

Performance Evaluation of Teams in Chinese Professional Baseball League

Abstract: In this article, a performance evaluation of the Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL) was conducted from a human resources (HR) perspective. Two important aspects were included: (1) a comprehensive evaluation of the competition performance of the professional baseball teams in international games and regular season games; and (2) the data envelopment analysis (DEA) and “two-stage†methodologies, which were employed to process truncated data to resolve the factors that affect the efficiency of the decision-making unit (DMU). By applying DEA and truncated regression analysis with bootstrapping, the performances of CPBL teams in games of different intensities were investigated. The number of foreign coaches and native players both were the key factors to affect the competitive efficiency of CPBL teams, and the Uni President 7-ELEVEN Lions had the best performance efficiency team. This interdisciplinary investigation provided the most appropriate references and recommendations for professional baseball teams on HR management so that baseball fans' expectations are met.

The Role of Convertible Securities in Venture Capital Financing

Abstract: In this paper we study the role of convertible securities in the financing of start-up enterprises when the entrepreneurs are better informed than the venture capitalists (VCs). We demonstrate that for a well-designed contract the conversion ratio of the securities can be used as a signaling device to overcome the problem of information asymmetry. If the variability of the return is sufficiently large, the entrepreneurs will find it desirable to rely on convertible securities with the conversion ratio revealing part of his information, that is, a ”separating equilibrium” will arise. Such an equilibrium has the advantage of avoiding the incentive constraints that appear in the other ”pooling equilibrium”, in which the privately held information is not revealed. We show that the time-lag of decisions between investment and conversion will also benefit the VCs, with the extra return as the ”time value”. In addition, we study the impact of introducing ”technical shares” with which the entrepreneurs are awarded equity shares without investment outlays. We compare the different financing devices with convertible securities and explain why convertible securities have become the most commonly used financial instrument for start-up enterprises.
