TL;DR: An algorithm based on the conjugate gradient method for the identification of bilinear systems is developed and outperforms the LMS and RLS algorithms in terms of speed of convergence.
Abstract: The application of the conjugate gradient (CG) method for the identification of bilinear systems is investigated. An algorithm based on the CG method is developed for adaptive bilinear digital filtering. In this algorithm, the optimization is done over blocks of input and output data rather than a single pair of data. However, only one iteration and coefficient update is done for every sample of data. This, coupled with the fact that the CG method used does not require a line search makes it very efficient in computation. Simulation results show that this algorithm outperforms the LMS and RLS algorithms in terms of speed of convergence. A preconditioning technique is also applied to further accelerate the convergence in some cases. >

TL;DR: This article showed that every regular double Stone algebra with operators can be represented as an algebra of rough subsets of an approximation space, which is a result for regular double double Stone algebras with operators.
Abstract: In 1951 Jonsson and Tarski showed that every Boolean algebra with operators could be embedded in a perfect (or canonical) extension. We obtain a similar result for regular double Stone algebras with operators. As a corollary we obtain another proof that every regular double Stone algebra can be represented as an algebra of rough subsets of an approximation space.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined possible correlates of change in parenting stress such as child development, family support, resources and income in the families of 105 infants with intraventricular hemorrhage.
Abstract: Parenting stress as it pertains to the families of medically fragile children of different ethnic backgrounds has been understudied. Possible correlates of change in parenting stress such as child development, family support, resources and income were examined in the families of 105 infants with intraventricular hemorrhage #opIVH#cp participating in an early intervention program between one and three years of age. Correlational analyses showed that slower developmental progress, along with declines in family resources and social support coincided with increases in parenting stress. Subgroup analyses separately examining these relationships in the 66 white and 39 nonwhite families revealed different correlates for the two populations. Unlike the full sample and the white sample, the non‐white families’ stress changes over the course of intervention seemed correlated only to income change, but not to child's developmental progress or changes in social support. Commonly cited findings regarding parents’ stre...

TL;DR: College counseling can best be understood as the intersection of a professional activity and an environment, which is reflected in the diversity of backgrounds and perspectives represented by college counselors and in differing models of counseling services.
Abstract: College counseling can best be understood as the intersection of a professional activity and an environment. The specialty has developed from the merging of several movements: vocational guidance, mental health, and student personnel work. These elements are reflected in the diversity of backgrounds and perspectives represented by college counselors and in differing models of counseling services. College counseling will be affected by trends including health care reform, scarcity of resources in higher education, changing student demographics, and complex societal issues.

TL;DR: Investigation of relationships between maternal responsiveness and parenting stress, family, medical, and demographic factors in mothers of children born prematurely at very low birth weights with intraventricular hemorrhage revealed lower maternal responsiveness was associated with greater demographic disadvantage and with high parent-related stress on selected subscales of the Parenting Stress Index.
Abstract: Explored relationships between maternal responsiveness and parenting stress, family, medical, and demographic factors in mothers of children born prematurely at very low birth weights with intraventricular hemorrhage. Mothers of 82 2-year-olds completed self-report questionnaires and were observed interacting with their children in free play during a yearly assessment. Path analysis (LISREL) revealed that lower maternal responsiveness, measured by the Parent/Caregiver Involvement Scale, was associated with greater demographic disadvantage and with high parent-related stress on selected subscales of the Parenting Stress Index. Child-related parenting stress was not associated with responsiveness, and severity of the child's medical condition at birth was weakly related. Results are discussed in the context of this unique population, and relevant research and measurement issues.

TL;DR: Analysis indicated that those children who were allegedly sexually abused were rated as exhibiting higher levels of symptomatology on all three factors of the Pediatric Emotional Distress Scale (PEDS) as well as the Total PEDS score than the other three groups.
Abstract: One purpose of this study was to examine the differences in behavior of children exposed to trauma versus no trauma. Another goal was to compare different types of traumatic events in terms of their effects on behaviors. Our analysis indicated significant differences between trauma and no trauma groups. Additional analyses indicated that those children who were allegedly sexually abused were rated as exhibiting higher levels of symptomatology on all three factors of the Pediatric Emotional Distress Scale (PEDS) as well as the Total PEDS score than the other three groups.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors explore recent literature on the programs of internal auditing education in several countries and how these programmes differ from institution-to-institution and from country to country.
Abstract: Society′s recognition of the importance of internal auditing has increased in recent years. This has resulted in an increased recognition of the need for improving and formalizing the manner in which internal auditors are educated. Suggests some of the forces that have led to this increased awareness of the value of internal auditing and discusses historical changes in internal auditing education. Explores recent literature on the programmes of internal auditing education in several countries and how these programmes differ from institution to institution and from country to country.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors discuss quantitatively the launch behavior of free-fall lifeboats, with particular emphasis on the effects of changes in the location of the CG on the boat's attitude at water entry and headway immediately after water entry.
Abstract: The free-fall lifeboat was developed to reduce the risk of injury during evacuation in a maritime emergency. It is a generally accepted concept for lifesaving appliances that currently is in use on many ships and offshore platforms. Three concerns during launch of these lifeboats are the attitude of the boat at water entry, the headway immediately after water entry, and the acceleration forces to which the occupants are subjected. Limited quantitative data is available about the behavior of the boats during launch and, in particular, on the effects of mass distribution on the launch behavior of free-fall lifeboats. The purpose of this paper is to discuss quantitatively the launch behavior of free-fall lifeboats, with particular emphasis on the effects of changes in the location of the CG.

Abstract: Discusses the importance of operational auditing and the crucial role of internal control in the audit process, providing a brief history of the beginnings of operational auditing and describing the recent report issued by the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of the Treadway Commission (COSO) which provides a widely accepted definition of internal control. Continues to review ways of gearing an internal audit course towards operational auditing, beginning with a description of basic methods of exposing students to operational auditing: including audit reports; interaction with practitioners; and ending with an outline of how students should actually perform an operational audit.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors used the perception of insurance company effectiveness in dealing with policyholders after a major natural disaster as a model for an analysis of customer satisfaction and found that repeat business and company success largely depend on the degree the company image matches consumer expectations.
Abstract: Insurance companies project images of concern about people and commit themselves to the prompt delivery of services in time of need. This article uses the perception of insurance company effectiveness in dealing with policyholders after a major natural disaster as a model for an analysis of customer satisfaction. Findings indicate that repeat business and company success largely depends on the degree the company image matches consumer expectations. Extrapolations from the findings are recommended for testing by other organizations interested in delivering quality service to customers to gain a competitive edge.

TL;DR: In this paper, the least mean square (LMS) algorithm is investigated for stability when implemented with two's complement quantization, and two different sufficient conditions are obtained for the bounded input bounded output (BIBO) stability of the PSV filter.
Abstract: The least mean square (LMS) algorithm is investigated for stability when implemented with two's complement quantization. The study is restricted to algorithms with periodically varying inputs. Such inputs are common in a variety of applications, and for system identification, they can always be generated as shown with an example. It is shown that the quantized LMS algorithm is just a special case of a quantized periodically shift-varying (PSV) filter. Two different sufficient conditions are obtained for the bounded input bounded output (BIBO) stability of the PSV filter. When the filter is BIBO stable, two different bounds on the filter output are also derived. These conditions and bounds are then applied to the quantized LMS algorithm. The results are illustrated with examples.
