Abstract: The density, viscosity, conductance, and transference number of aqueous magnesium chloride at 29815°K are reported for the concentration range 0 to 57m The transference numbers were determined using the emf method It was found that the viscosity, conductance, and transference number of aqueous magnesium chloride are similar to those for aqueous nickel chloride It was therefore tentatively concluded that incomplete dissociation and complex formation was unlikely to be of importance in nickel chloride solutions

Abstract: The part played by the university in the building of a nation in the post-independence period is described and illustrated by means of a detailed study of Malaysia. The impact of economic, socio-cultural and political factors is analysed and the objectives of higher education in contemporary Malaysia are articulated. The rapid development of new universities (beginning with the author's own institution in 1969) was carried out simultaneously with an increasing demand for graduates in science and technology. Questions of access in the Malaysian multi-cultural situation and the measures taken to increase Malay participation in higher education are discussed, particularly in relation to manpower needs. Research in Malaysian universities is directed towards social and economic problems and the applied is preferred to the pure. The article ends with a call for greater coordination of the contributions made by the separate universities to the building of the nation.

TL;DR: This paper reviews the systematic status and geographical distribution of 30 odd species of freshwater calanoid copepods in Southeast Asia and the implication of a north-south diminishing of copepod species to inland fisheries is postulated.
Abstract: This paper reviews the systematic status and geographical distribution of 30 odd species of freshwater calanoid copepods in Southeast Asia. Three regions are delineated based on the diversity and abundance of these organisms; Region I being the Southasiatic element, Region II the attenuated belt of copepods and Region III rich in endemic species. The implication of a north-south diminishing of copepod species to inland fisheries is postulated.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: Investigations on tissue level bioaccumulated trace metal contents in mussel from an experimental culture farm indicated BDL values for As in all tissues, Cd highest in the intestines and stomach, and Co in the mantle, while culture experiments at 10 ppm concentration stresses of the different trace elements over a 48-h period did not result in a similar tendency in tissue bioconcentration.

TL;DR: This paper argues that careful evaluation be made of the methods and outcome of these traditional treatments of drug dependence and summarizes some of the evidence so far published.
Abstract: Many countries in Southeast Asia have the experience of traditional treatments of drug dependence, or have healers who are extending traditional methods to meet contemporary needs. Some treatments, for example those used in some Buddhist monastereis in Thailand and clinics in Japan, reply upon the philosophical and religious traditions of the country; others come closer to faith healing and magic in their practices; and many use herbal preprations during detoxification and afterwards, as well as offfering spiritual or secular therapy. This paper argues that careful evaluation be made of the methods and outcome of these traditional treatments of drug dependence and summarizes some of the evidence so far published.

TL;DR: The Malaysian MARC (MALMARC) Project, which is one of five cooperative programmes involving the five university libraries and the National Library of Malaysia, constitutes one of the components of the developing Malaysian Research Library Network.
Abstract: The Malaysian MARC (MALMARC) Project, which is one of five cooperative programmes involving the five university libraries and the National Library of Malaysia, constitutes one of the components of the developing Malaysian Research Library Network. The Project began in October 1977 as an experiment as a result of a feasibility study, and became an operational system in July 1979. During the experimental period, costing studies were undertaken and these revealed that for all the participating institutions, an automated cataloguing system was cheaper than the manual system. The MALMARC system is currently being operated by the MALMARC Coordinating Centre at the Universiti Sains Malaysia. Details of the system together with flowcharts are provided. The human and technical problems encountered are also discussed and this article concludes with a brief outline of future developments.

TL;DR: It is argued that adolescent drug abuse in Malaysia is not to be linked specifically with social deprivation, but should be seen as being part of the life style of particular groups in all strata of society.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: A representative sampling of the secondary school population of two states of Malaysia indicated that 11% of students had had experience of drug use, and a quarter of those who had used drugs reported experience with four or more substances and were likely to have progressed rapidly to heroin.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: The author recommended the sustained-release preparation technique for inducing spawning in fish difficult to breed with a significant increase in the gonadosomatic index of female fish kept in total darkness, and in natural conditions.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: The findings indicate that the new pattern of drug use by youth has transcended the older cultural differences between the states of Penang and Selangor, and is in turn explained by a more universally familiar set of characteristics in adolescent development.

TL;DR: A model for the automated morphological analysis of Bahasa Malaysia (the Malay language) via the ATEF system, a component of the mechanical translation system known as ARIANE, which was developed by G.E.T.A. at Grenoble is described.
Abstract: This paper describes a model for the automated morphological analysis of Bahasa Malaysia (the Malay language) via the ATEF system, a component of the mechanical translation system known as ARIANE, which was developed by G.E.T.A. at Grenoble. This model serves two purposes, that is, to test the capability of handling Bahasa Malaysia morphological analysis using ATEF and also to provide a first workign model.

TL;DR: In this paper, a comparative study of optical microscopy and chemical analysis of residual solutions for evaluation of degree of crystallisation was carried out to ascertain their suitability for kinetics study of CaWO4 and BaWO 4 crystallisation from LiCl melts (i) by continuous cooling at a constant cooling rate, and (ii) at constant temperature from a supersaturated solution.
Abstract: A comparative study of the accuracy of optical microscopy and chemical analysis of residual solutions for evaluation of degree of crystallisation was carried out to ascertain their suitability for kinetics study of CaWO4 and BaWO4 crystallisation from LiCl melts (i) by continuous cooling at a constant cooling rate, and (ii) at constant temperature from a supersaturated solution. Chemical analysis of residual solution does not give desirable accuracy for the case (i) for αt values <0.30, and for the case (ii) for αt values <0.60. Optical microscopy was more accurate and suitable for both cases.

TL;DR: In this paper, complexes of pyridine-2-carbothioamide with diethyltin dichloride, dibenzyltin and phenyltin trichloride are described.
Abstract: Complexes of pyridine-2-carbothioamide with diethyltin dichloride, dibenzyltin dichloride and phenyltin trichloride are described. In each case, the chelating agent is bound to the tin(IV) atom by the pyridine nitrogen and the carbothioamide sulphur, giving support to proposals that certain organotin compounds cause enzyme deactivation via the formation of tin-sulphur bonds.
