TL;DR: In this article, the authors show that treatment with antioxidants makes the plant tolerant against water stress by modulating the endogenous levels of H2O2 and ascorbic acid in stressed tissue.
Abstract: Vigna cutjang Endl. cv. Pusa Barsati seedlings, subjected to increasing degrees of water stress (−0.5, −1.0, −1,5 MPa), produced an approximately proportional increase in glycolate oxidase activity, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and proline content but a decrease in catalase activity, ascorbic acid and protein content. Leaf water potential (leaf ψ) and relative water content (RWC) were also lowered with increasing stress. Pretreatment with l-cysteine and reduced glutathione (10-3 M) decreased glycolate oxidase activity, H2O2 content, ascorbic acid oxidase activity, proline content and also slightly improved the water status of leaves stressed (−1.0 MPa) for 2 days. Pretreatment of non-stressed seedlings with these antioxidants had little or no effect. These studies indicate that treatment with antioxidants makes the plant tolerant against water stress by modulating the endogenous levels of H2O2 and ascorbic acid in stressed tissue.

TL;DR: The number of spikelets per panicle, number of panicles, percentage filled grains, panicle weight and grain yield per plant and the mobilization and harvest indices were significantly increased by kinetin treatment, while ABA decreased most of them.
Abstract: Senescence of rice (Oryza sativa L. cv. Jaya) leaves was regulated with kinetin and abscisic acid (ABA) sprays at the reproductive stage. The effect of such sprays on grain-filling and yield was analyzed. Spraying 100-day-old plants with kinetin solution (100 μg ml-1) significantly delayed senescence as indicated by higher total chlorophyll and protein levels in the three uppermost leaves compared with the controls. In contrast, spraying with ABA (15 μg ml-1) significantly promoted foliar senescence. The number of spikelets per panicle, number of panicles, percentage filled grains, panicle weight and grain yield per plant and the mobilization and harvest indices were significantly increased by kinetin treatment, while ABA decreased most of them. The possibility of increased grain-filling and thus, yield due to delayed foliar senescence by kinetin treatment and decreased grain-filling due to hastening of senescence by ABA is discussed.

TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of Hall current on Couette flow of an electrically conducting fluid between two parallel plates in the presence of a uniform transverse magnetic field for a rotating system has been discussed.
Abstract: In this paper the effects of Hall current on Couette flow of an electrically conducting fluid between two parallel plates in the presence of a uniform transverse magnetic field for a rotating system has been discussed. Here, we have taken the plates to be of arbitrary conductivity and arbitrary thickness. Analytic solution has been obtained exactly and influence of different parameters viz.,Hartmann number, rotation parameter, wall conductivity parameters, Hail parameters for the liquid as well as the plates, and the thickness parameters on the primary and secondary velocity profiles, and induced magnetic field components, magnetic and viscous stresses as well as flux ratio has been examined numerically.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors measured the refractive indices of AgGaS2 crystal at different temperatures using the classical minimum deviation technique and fitted in appropriate dispersion relations, and the variation of pump laser wavelength for noncritical upconversion of signal at 10.6 μm with the change in crystal temperature has been verified using the above data.
Abstract: Refractive indices of AgGaS2 crystal are measured at different temperatures using the classical minimum deviation technique and are fitted in appropriate dispersion relations. The variation of pump laser wavelength for noncritical upconversion of signal at 10.6 μm with the change in crystal temperature has been verified using the above data. Temperature tunable infrared generation by noncritically phase-matched difference-frequency mixing has been predicted from 3 to 18 μm.

TL;DR: Glycerol and glucose were found to be the best carbon sources, while as N-source nitrate was preferred, and growth in shake flasks favoured higher yield of the antibiotic in a shorter time.
Abstract: The nutritional requirements and cultural conditions for optimal production of a new extracellular antifungal antibiotic byStreptomyces galbus under laboratory conditions were determined. Glycerol and glucose were found to be the best carbon sources, while as N-source nitrate was preferred. Maximum titre was reached after 7 d of incubation at 30 °C at pH 6.8. The metal ions Cu2+, Zn2+, Mn2+ and Fe2+ had some promoting effect. Casein hydrolysate improved production, but yeast extract markedly inhibited. Growth in shake flasks favoured higher yield of the antibiotic in a shorter time.

TL;DR: A bacterium isolated from Burdwan (India) soil was found to accumulate lysine in the growth medium and was identified as Arthrobacter globiformis.
Abstract: A bacterium isolated from Burdwan (India) soil was found to accumulatel-lysine in the growth medium and was identified asArthrobacter globiformis. The strain grew and accumulated lysine in a purely synthetic medium. Supplementation of the synthetic medium stimulated growth but did not improve the yield. The entire fermentation period could be divided into a growth phase and a production phase, which could be prolonged by adjustment of pH to the neutral range. Among the different hydrocarbon and nitrogen sources tested SR gas oil at 4 % and ammonium sulphate at 0.4 %, respectively, were found most to be suitable. Different vitamins and antibiotics stimulated growth and lysine yield; inoculum of 7 % (V/V) of the medium was found to be optimal. The yield of lysine under optimal conditions was 3.4 g per litre medium. Lysine was isolated in crystalline form from the fermented broth by IEC and found to be a purel-isomer.

TL;DR: Sex expression in a monoecious cucurbit can be regulated by application of gibberellin A3 (GA3), indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and 3-hydroxymethyl oxindole (HMO), an oxidation product of IAA, all of which promote female flowering.
Abstract: Sex expression in a monoecious cucurbit, Momordica charantia L. (long–fruited variety ‘Karela’) can be regulated by application of gibberellin A3 (GA3), indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) and 3-hydroxymethyl oxindole (HMO), an oxidation product of IAA, all of which promote female flowering. Both IAA and HMO accelerated ethylene evolution in the seedlings of this plant. While a low concentration of Ethrel promotes flowering, the effect was reversed with increased concentrations. Surprisingly, GA3 was the most effective growth regulator in increasing, femaleness. In untreated plants, levels of endogenous GA-like substance increased progressively up to the age of 60 days, at which the ratio of male to female flowers was minimum.

TL;DR: A streptomycete producing an antibiotic having antifungal and antibacterial activity was isolated from a soil sample of West Bengal and identified as Streptomyces galbus, a colourless, odourless, hygroscopic, amorphous compound.
Abstract: A streptomycete producing an antibiotic having antifungal and antibacterial activity was isolated from a soil sample of West Bengal. It was characterized and identified as Streptomyces galbus. The antibiotic was isolated from the fermented broth by treatment with activated charcoal and purified by chromatography on alumina and paper. It is a colourless, odourless, hygroscopic, amorphous compound. Although homogeneous by paper and thin-layer chromatography, the possibility of the presence of two components was indicated by gel filtration. Its physico-chemical characteristics and UV-absorption spectrum suggest a non-polyenic nature. It is active against a wide variety of fungi and bacteria. It has some phytotoxic effect, but is relatively non-toxic to rats.

TL;DR: The ratio of the total meiotic duration to that of spermiogenesis shows statistical agreement with the frequency of occurrence of all meiotic stages and spermatids in the seminiferous tubules.
Abstract: 1. The duration of individual stages of meiosis and spermiogenesis in Channa punctatus (Bloch) was calculated autoradiographically by using the kinetics of H3-TdR labelled spermatocytes in vivo.2. The duration of leptotene, zygotene, diplotene, diakinesis and metaphase I is short while that of pachytene is in between 1.95 and 2.20 days.3. The spermiogenesis is completed within 7.80±0.20 days and the labelled spermatozoa were detected at 11.25 d post injection, which is the approximate total duration of meiosis and spermiogenesis.4. The ratio of the total meiotic duration to that of spermiogenesis shows statistical agreement with the frequency of occurrence of all meiotic stages and spermatids in the seminiferous tubules.

TL;DR: Three different treatments by calcium (102M), namely seed treatment, foliar spraying and their combination were applied on field-grown rice under both water stressed and non-stressed conditions in the course of plant development, the combined treatment being most effective.
Abstract: Three different treatments by calcium (102M), namely seed treatment, foliar spraying and their combination were applied on field-grown rice (Oryza sativa L cv Ratna) under both water stressed and non-stressed conditions in the course of plant development The relative water content and leaf water potential decreased with increase in age of stressed and non-stressed plants Pretreatment of seeds with Ca improved the water status of the plants most prominently at the vegetative stage but the effect gradually faded away with plant development The foliar spraying by Ca was more effective in improving the water status of the plants at the reproductive stage The combined Ca treatment significantly improved water status of the plants both at the vegetative and reproductive stages The contents of chlorophyll and protein decreased and the activities of protease and RNase increased in the course of plant development in both non-stressed and even more in stressed plants Ca treatments of seeds or plants or their combination inhibited the decline in chlorophyll and protein contents and the rising trends of protease and RNase activities, the combined treatment being most effective During plant development free proline content increased significantly more in water stressed plants In non-stressed plants there was a marked increase in the free proline content at the mature fruit stage Ca treatment inhibited the rise of free proline in stressed plants A significant reduction in yield components and yield of the crop in water stressed plants was increased by Ca treatment

TL;DR: Barsati et al. as mentioned in this paper showed that the treatment of Vigna seedlings with reducing agents reduced the deteriorative changes and oxidative processes which are characteristic of water stressed tissue.
Abstract: Decreasing substrate osmotic potential produced in seedlings ofVigna catjang Endl. (cv. Pusa Barsati) proportional decrease in relative water content and leaf water potential, increase in respiration rate, proline content, H2O2 content, and the activities of indole acetic acid oxidase, ascorbic acid oxidase, peroxidase and glycolate oxidase but decrease in catalase activity and glycolate content. Pretreatment with reducing agents like L-cysteine or reduced glutathione (10−3 M) caused lower decrease in the relative water content, leaf water potential and glycolate content and reduced the rise of respiration rate, proline content and H2O2 content and also the activities of aforementioned oxidative enzymes, except catalase activity which was increased. Such treatments also maintained the chlorophyll and protein levels and decreased the tissue permeability. It was concluded that the treatment ofVigna seedlings with reducing agents reduced the deteriorative changes and oxidative processes which are characteristic of water stressed tissue.

TL;DR: In this paper, the kinetics of substitution of aquo-ligand from hydroxopenta-aquo chromium (III) by DL-alanine in aqueous medium has been studied spectrophotometrically.
Abstract: The kinetics of substitution of aquo-ligand from hydroxopenta-aquo chromium (III) byDL-alanine in aqueous medium has been studied spectrophotometrically. The rate law involving the formation of ion-pair has been established in the pH range 4.5–5.4. The reaction rate is higher compared to water exchange and other substitution reactions of hydroxopenta-aquo chromium(III) ion. Activation parameters have been evaluated. A lower ΔH+ value for the reaction suggests that both bond-breaking and bond making are equally important in the transition state.

TL;DR: In all tissues of both sexes GPT activity was found always to be higher than GOT activity, and juvenileoid treatment of the allatectomized insects reverses the effect ofallatectomy.
Abstract: L-Alanine:2-oxoglutarate aminotransferase (GPT, 2.6.1) and L-aspartate:2-oxoglutarate aminotransferase (GOT, 2.6.1) activity were different in different tissues of each sex and also in the 2 sexes. In all tissues of both sexes GPT activity was found always to be higher than GOT activity. Allatectomy leads to a decline in the activity of both enzymes in all tissues of males and females. Juvenoid treatment of the allatectomized insects reverses the effect of allatectomy. After both allatectomy and brain-cauterization and extremely high decline of the activity of both enzymes in comparison to cases in which only allatectomy had been carried out.

TL;DR: In this paper, the binding energy and wave functions were compared for this choice and the zero particle spectrum, and the saturation point was shifted to 1.6 fm/sup -1/ with a binding energy of about 21 MeV.
Abstract: The single particle energy is calculated self-consistently in nuclear matter using the Paris potential. Binding energy and wave functions are compared for this choice and the zero particle spectrum. A gain in binding energy of 6 MeV is obtained at normal density of which 5 MeV is due to the /sup 3/S/sub 1hyphen/ /sup 3/D/sub 1/ channel alone. The wave function for the /sup 3/S/sub 1hyphen/ /sup 3/D/sub 1/ channel shows marked enhancement in the 0.9--3.0 fm region. The saturation point is shifted to 1.6 fm/sup -1/ with a binding energy of about 21 MeV. Real parts of optical model parameters are also deduced and discussed.
