TL;DR: Venous blood from healthy premature infants, premature infants with known bacterial infections, normal term infants and adults, was incubated in vitro with Pseudomonas aeruginosa to test for the nitroblue‐tetrazolium (NBT) reducing activity of neutrophils.
Abstract: Summary Venous blood from healthy premature infants, premature infants with known bacterial infections, normal term infants and adults, was incubated in vitro with Pseudomonas aeruginosa. At 30 min intervals, blood samples were tested for the nitroblue-tetrazolium (NBT) reducing activity of neutrophils. The results of the histochemical NBT test were compared with those of the blood controls from which bacteria were omitted. The stimulation of neutrophils with Ps. aeruginosa induces a considerable increase of NBT reduction in all 4 groups of subjects examined. The maximum rate of NBT reduction was observed after 1 hour of incubation with the test organism, and reached its lowest degree after 3 hours. By contrast the NBT reduction by un-stimulated neutrophils of the same subjects remain unchanged during a 3 hour period of incubation.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors compared the orientation and the energies of polyvinyl acetate at the interphase W A with the corresponding properties at W O, and showed that at the interface W A the macromolecule lies as a deformed coil with moderate flexibility and low attractive energies.
Abstract: In order to compare the orientation and the energies of polyvinyl acetate at the interphase W A with the corresponding properties at the interphase W O , the spreading isotherms at the two interfaces are reported. From the comparison of virial coefficients of bidimensional state equations with those of equations theoretically deduced, and from the values of the thermodynamic spreading properties, we have demonstrated that at the interface W A the macromolecule lies as a deformed coil with moderate flexibility and with rather low attractive energies. In contrast, at the interphase W O the cohesion energies can be considered negligible.

TL;DR: Measurements of incorporation of [(14)C]leucine into kidney alkaline phosphatase in rats fed on complete or phosphate-free diet provide evidence of a twofold increase in the rate of synthesis of the enzyme in diet-treated animals.
Abstract: The mechanisms by which phosphate regulates the activity of alkaline phosphatase (orthophosphoric monoester phosphohydrolase, EC 3131) in rat kidney were investigated Measurements of incorporation of [(14)C]leucine into kidney alkaline phosphatase in rats fed on complete or phosphate-free diet provide evidence of a twofold increase in the rate of synthesis of the enzyme in diet-treated animals Cycloheximide experiments indicated that control and diet-adapted enzyme decreases in activity according to first-order kinetics with a calculated half-life of 103 and 65h after complete and phosphate-free diet administration respectively Basal and diet-adapted enzymes exhibit similar K(m) values for several phosphomonoesters and an identical degree of inhibition is produced by cysteine In addition, the enzyme from both sources is the same with regard to heat inactivation at 45, 56 or 64 degrees C, to the profile of elution from Sephadex and to electrophoretic properties on polyacrylamide gel A failure of rat kidney alkaline phosphatase to respond to cortisol (hydrocortisone) was also observed
