TL;DR: In this article, the influence of participation in an Intercultural Communication Workshop (ICW) on cross-cultural attitudes, the formation of cross-culture friendships, the potential for crosscultural interaction, and cross cultural interaction was examined.
Abstract: The present study examines the influence of participation in an Intercultural Communication Workshop (ICW) on cross‐cultural attitudes, the formation of cross‐cultural friendships, the potential for cross‐cultural interaction, and cross‐cultural interaction. Data were collected on participants in an ICW and a nonequivalent control group and analyzed via multiple regression. The data supported three hypothesized relationships and failed to support a fourth. The results indicate that, first, participation in an ICW, in conjunction with the cross‐cultural attitude, significantly influences the number of cross‐cultural friendships formed. Second, the number of cross‐cultural friends and the cross‐cultural attitude significantly influences the potential for cross‐cultural interaction. Third, the cross‐cultural interaction potential and the number of cross‐cultural friends significantly influence cross‐cultural interaction in which participants engage. Finally, the results of this study failed to support the hy...

TL;DR: The effect of germanium on the secretion of siliceous spicules by the freshwater sponge Spongilla lacustris was investigated by exposing germinating and hatching gemmules to varying concentrations ofgermanium (Ge) in the presence of silicon (Si).
Abstract: The effect of germanium on the secretion of siliceous spicules by the freshwater sponge Spongilla lacustris was investigated by exposing germinating and hatching gemmules to varying concentrations of germanium (Ge) in the presence of silicon (Si). Results were analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively and demonstrate that a [Ge]/[Si] (= molar ratio) of 1.0 completely inhibits silicon deposition. Intermediate ratios (0.5, 0.1, 0.01) which are permissive to spicule appearance result in fewer, shorter, and thinner spicules, in proportionately fewer microscleres, and in short bulbous megascleres. The size of the bulb increases with increasing [Ge]/[Si], while the length of the bulbous megascleres decreases with increasing [Ge]/[Si]. Microscleres do not demonstrate these graded responses suggesting that they are secreted in an all or none manner. Swellings produced in pond water and bulbs produced in germanium appear to decrease in size with time indicating a spreading of the accumulated silica. The effect of germanium on spicule secretion can be partially explained by its ability to uncouple the growth in length of the axial filament from the growth of the surrounding silicalemma. Under these conditions excess silicalemma is produced in which silica accumulates as bulbs in short spicules. Continuous exposure to Ge is necessary to produce this altered morphology. It is conjectured that the bulbs may be retained due to an inhibition of spreading. which in turn may be caused by the incorporation of germanium into the silica.

TL;DR: In this article, separate factor analyses of the value rankings of 53 male and 77 female college students yielded three factors for each gender: creative self-determination versus Submissive Dependency, personal gratifications versus Sociopolitical Consciousness, and existential responsibility versus Traditionalism.
Abstract: Separate factor analyses of the value rankings of 53 male and 77 female college students yielded three factors for each gender. Interpretation suggested “Creative Self-Determination versus Submissive Dependency,” “Personal Gratification versus Sociopolitical Consciousness,” and “Existential Responsibility versus Traditionalism” as core concepts for the female respondents; while males' axiological dimensions were labeled “Communal Idealism versus Entrepreneural Pragmatism,” “Hedonism versus Egalitarianism,” and “Sybaritic Bohemianism versus Traditional Sobriety.” Each pole of the female factors was interpreted as reflecting a major ideological referent component of the Women's Liberation Movement, while male factors were construed as constituting perspectives for interpreting varieties of response to feminist ideology. Techniques for increasing individuals' levels of self-actualization by direct intervention in axiological organization were discussed.

TL;DR: A limited number of aspects of the traditional healer in Tanzania are discussed, probably because research in their fields brought them into close contact with the rural population.
Abstract: I shall deal with a limited number of aspects of the traditional healer in Tanzania. A more expanded treatment will be presented in a larger study on health policy and development in Tanzania since 1930. Traditional medicine has been discussed by anthropologists, sociologists, and geographers in ever increasing numbers in this country, probably because research in their fields brought them into close contact with the rural population. Historians and political scientists have been slow in examining the role of the native doctor in the colonial period and since 1961. This does not mean that material on the existence and activities of the African practitioner of medicine was not available. It was the medical doctor who became aware of the existence of African medicine when he found that his treatment was not accepted or was supplemented by visits to the African medicine man.

TL;DR: It was predicted that when E expectations are known, obese Ss will comply and demonstrate response inhibition and rejection of conflicting cues where appropriate, and task performance indicated compliance with E among obesity Ss but not among normal Ss.
Abstract: Summary A study of compliance in task performance was conducted. It was predicted that when E expectations are known, obese Ss will comply and demonstrate response inhibition and rejection of conflicting cues where appropriate. The Ss were 20 normal weight and 20 obese American female college students. Equal numbers of each weight group were given one of two expectations and also presented with conflicting incidental cues. While obese Ss tended to report awareness of incidental cues more frequently, task performance indicated compliance with E among obese Ss but not among normal Ss. Results did not support interpretations of higher performance levels among obese Ss as related to oversensitization to external stimuli or to response inhibition deficiency.

TL;DR: If you are one of the many who feel that equations (2, (4), (5), and (6) are too diffi cult, you will probably find the techniques discussed in this article of interest.
Abstract: If you are one of the many who feel that equations (2), (4), (5), and (6) are too diffi cult, you will probably find the techniques discussed in this article of interest. Actually all these equations can be solved using general iterative methods. Whereas such methods are conceptually easy to understand, they have been tradi tionally neglected because they require lengthy and tedious calculations. Now with the widespread availability of calculators and computers, iterative procedures are practical and should no longer be avoided. In fact, for solving equations they should become part of the standard secondary school curriculum; then students will be come aware that general equation-solving techniques that they can use do exist.
