Sorting systems and sensing devices for use therewith

Abstract: The invention discloses a weight sorting system wherein a single weighing station controls a plurality of weight-range article removal stations. These removal stations are disposed downstream of the weighing station and sorting information is synchronously passed with the articles on route to discharge. The rate at which articles are selected for removal at a given station is controlled by varying the weight range for that station. The weighing system is constantly re-calibrated by employing a plurality of test weights, one for each sorting weight range, carried by the conveyor system and an electronic compensating unit.

Power take-off shaft assemblies

Abstract: A power take-off shaft assembly comprises a hollow drive shaft rotatable at one speed; a drive sleeve surrounding said shaft and rotatable simultaneously at another speed; a power take-off shaft with differently splined ends each adapted to fit within the drive shaft and with a central flange having an inner circle of equally spaced holes counterbored at one side of said flange and an outer circle of equally spaced holes counterbored at the other side thereof; and stepped bolts able to reach through said holes only from the counterbored ends thereof to secure the power take-off shaft to the drive shaft when fitted in said inner circle of holes whilst one end of the power take-off shaft projects operatively, and to secure the power take-off shaft to the sleeve when fitted in said outer circle of holes after turning said shaft end-for-end so that its other end projects operatively.

Brake operating systems

Abstract: An agricultural tractor has individually operable near-side and off-side brakes with respective brake levers. Said levers are disposed one at each side of a master lever, the three levers being pivotable about a common axis and each provided with a foot pedal. The master lever carries a pivotally mounted cross-bar arranged to operate both of the brake levers with an equalising action when the master lever is operated. One of the two brake levers is fixed to a transversely extending horizontal shaft journalled in a sleeve which is mounted on the tractor and rotatably supports a clutch-operating lever.

Luminescence, optical absorption, and ESR of ZnSSe:Mn

Abstract: The manganese ion placed in ZnS–Se solid solution has been investigated by measuring photoluminescence, optical absorption, and ESR spectra. A model is suggested to represent the manganese ion placed in the mixed host lattice. Each manganese ion is situated in a tetrahedron with four immediate anion neighbours at the corners. This unit determines the features of the measured spectra. More distant anion neighbours do not interact with the manganese ion to a significant extent. For a given host lattice composition, certain cation sites are found to be favoured above others by the manganese ion so that the overall distribution of manganese is non-uniform. As a result, mutual perturbation of the manganese ions may occur resulting in increased transition probabilities. Das in einem ZnS–Se-Mischkristall eingebaute Manganion wird durch Photolumineszenz, optische Absorption und ESR-Spektren untersucht. Es wird ein Modell vorgeschlagen, das das in den Wirtsmischkristall eingebaute Manganion darstellt. Jedes Manganion befindet sich in einem Tetraeder mit vier unmittelbaren Anionennachbarn an den Ecken. Diese Einheit bestimmt die Hauptzuge der gemessenen Spektren. Weiter entfernte Anionen-nachbarn wechselwirken nicht in merklichem Ausmas mit dem Manganion. Fur eine gegebene Zusammensetzung des Wirtsgitters wird gefunden, das bestimmte Kationenplatze gegenuber anderen von dem Manganion bevorzugt werden, so das die Gesamt-verteilung des Mangan nicht gleichformig ist. Als Folge kann eine gegenseitige Storung der Manganionen auftreten, die zu einer Erhohung der Ubergangswahrscheinlichkeiten fuhrt.

Dual clutches with splash & gravity cooling circuits

Abstract: An engine/clutch combination has an engine-driven flywheel on which is mounted a clutch mechanism for disengagably connecting the flywheel selectively to a shaft or to the shaft and to a sleeve surrounding said shaft. A clutch housing, the lower portion of which forms a sump containing oil, envelops the flywheel and clutch mechanism and has a trough within it forming a well which accommodates the lower portions of said flywheel and clutch mechanism. An aperture is formed in the trough for allowing oil to flow from a space between the trough and the clutch housing to an annular groove formed in that face of the flywheel remote from the clutch mechanism, from which it flows via passages in the flywheel to that part of the clutch mechanism associated with the shaft and via further passages in the flywheel to that part of the clutch mechanism associated with the sleeve, and thence to the trough. The oil is centrifugally flung out of the trough by the rotation of the flywheel and clutch mechanism, collected by gravity flow to the aforementioned space, and made available for recirculation through the clutch.

Multi-speed reversible gearing

Abstract: A gearbox for an agricultural tractor comprises forward and reverse gearing connecting an input shaft to a co-axial intermediate shaft, dual-range gearing connecting the intermediate shaft to a layshaft, and 4-speed gearing connecting the layshaft to an output shaft and utilising those of the dualrange gears disposed on the layshaft. The foward and reverse gearing includes a synchromesh clutch, and the 4-speed gearing includes a synchromesh clutch for the highest and the next highest of its speed ratios and a dog clutch for the lowest and the next lowest of its speed ratios. The dual-range gearing includes a cluster of two gears slideable on the intermediate shaft. A power take-off shaft passes through the input and intermediate shafts which are formed as sleeves.

Television advertising: a consumer viewpoint

Abstract: Presents and analyses the results of an explorating study into consumer reactions to television advertising. Assesses consumer attitudes by the use of three criteria: consumer feelings towards exagerated and annoying advertising; the consumer's subjective assessment of creative advertising; and their assessment of their ideal type of advertisement. Suggests that consumer reactions are disturbing, revealing uncomplementary results which could reduce advertising effectiveness.

Turbocharging of Small Engines

Abstract: During the last 20 years, progressively smaller diesel engines have been turbocharged, so that units of 50-60 hp are produced today. Spark-ignition engines remain normally aspirated for most applications, although this picture may change.Progress followed the adoption of radial flow turbines using lost-wax cast rotors. Other developments included:raising component efficiencies; dealing with bearing and seal design problems, and with vane vibration; and in devising manufacturing methods for quantities approaching 3000 weekly, in mixed and rapidly changing batch sizes.Various control systems are available to match the turbocharger to the demands of variable speed engines.

A galactic model II: The gravitationally radiated angular and linear momenta fluxes

Abstract: Using the linearised theory of general relativity the gravitationally radiated angular and linear momenta from a galactic model ofN gravitational radiators is calculated. The results are presented in terms of the lowest order contributing multipole moments (quadrupole), the orientations of the radiators about a common reference frame, the distances between pairs of radiators and the frequency of each radiator. This work is a continuation of an earlier work in which the galactic model was first proposed and its gravitationally radiated energy flux was computed.

Abstract: An aluminum bronze alloy for forming corrosion resistant articles by cold working, the alloy comprising by weight 5% to 8% Aluminum, 0.1% to 2% Cobalt and 0.10% to 0.25% Tin, which latter may be replaced by an equal amount of Silver, and the balance being Copper and impurities.
