TL;DR: Measurements and experimental protocols were similar, allowing direct comparisons to be made between samples, and specific quantitative characteristics and trends in circumpubertal growth of the laryngeal cartilages and the vocal folds for each sex and with respect to sex differences are highlighted.
Abstract: Prepubertal, pubertal, and adult measurements of human larynges were used to describe growth of the larynx from prepuberty to adulthood. Linear and weight measurements made of 10 Caucasian male and 10 Caucasian female prepubertal and pubertal cadaveric larynges were compared to adult measurement data obtained from another study on 20 male and 20 female larynges of adults, aged 37-70. In both studies measurements and experimental protocols were similar, allowing direct comparisons to be made between samples. Results highlight specific quantitative characteristics and trends in circumpubertal growth of the laryngeal cartilages and the vocal folds for each sex and with respect to sex differences. The results are discussed with respect to the literature on postnatal laryngeal development and to published research on adolescent voice change.

TL;DR: This article analyzed survey data to discover how fear of crime affects the elderly and found that fear is related to neighborhood dissatisfaction and low morale, and, to a lesser extent, to involuntary isolation.
Abstract: This paper analyzes survey data to discover how fear of crime affects the elderly Fear of crime is a less severe problem for the elderly than previous reports suggest However, fear is related to neighborhood dissatisfaction and low morale, and, to a lesser extent, to involuntary isolation The data do not support previous assertions that fear of crime is the most serious problem facing the elderly and there is no evidence that social support reduces the negative effects of fear on well-being

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined the hypothesis that resume determinateness is positively related to the evaluation given to the resume by prospective employers and found that female raters showed a tendency to be more stringent than males in their evaluations, and this effect was pronounced for older, married applicants.
Abstract: Six male and six female personnel professionals were presented with resumes in which sex, age, marital status, and academic achievement were systematically varied. The study examined the hypothesis that resume determinateness is positively related to the evaluation given to the resume by prospective employers. The provision of ambiguous information was found to distort the evaluation process but not in a consistent manner. Married males and females were evaluated more positively than were those who were single. Also married females with high academic status were evaluated more positively than were married males with high academic status, although there were no differences for single males and females. Female raters showed a tendency to be more stringent than males in their evaluations, and this effect was pronounced for older, married applicants. The study examines the implications of these results and makes suggestions for future research.

TL;DR: This paper found that although mothers and fathers used a similar number of utterances in conversing with their firstborn 3-year-old sons over a 10-minute period, their patterns of speech were different on a number of quantitative measures including MLU, MLU of five longest utterances, percent of imperatives, and percent of questions.
Abstract: The language patterns of 10 mothers and 10 fathers with their firstborn 3-year-old sons were compared. Ten-minute mother-son and father-son conversations were recorded independently in the home during a free-play session with standard play mterials. The findings of this study indicate that although mothers and fathers used a similar number of utterances in conversing with their sons over a 10-minute period, their patterns of speech were different on a number of quantitative measures including MLU, MLU of five longest utterances, percent of imperatives, and percent of questions. In general, fathers' communication was viewed as more controlling and involving the child less, while mothers' communication was viewed as more child-centered and involving the child more.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigate the probable impact of tax and spending limitations on tax burdens and state expenditures via a systematic evaluation of the alternative proposals associated with tax limitation legislation, and analyzes the linking of state public sector growth to inflation, limiting tax burdens to a percent of personal income.
Abstract: The principal purpose of this study is to investigate the probable impact of tax and spending limitations on tax burdens and state expenditures. This is accomplished via a systematic evaluation of the alternative proposals associated with tax limitation legislation. In particular, this paper analyzes the linking of state public sector growth to inflation, limiting tax burdens to a percent of personal income, the inclusion of escape clauses in the enabling legislation and the evolution of these tax limitations into legalized minimums.

TL;DR: The addition of salicylaldoxime or ammonium hydroxide to catfish serum indicated the alternate rather than the classical pathway of complement activation to be important in bactericidal activity against S. paratyphi.
Abstract: Fresh channel catfish ( Ictalurus punctatus ) serum from unimmunized catfish exhibited 100% bactericidal activity against Salmonella paratyphi . Components responsible for bactericidal activity could be absorbed from the fresh catfish serum with S . paratyphi . The bactericidal system of the fresh catfish serum showed a need for magnesium rather than for calcium after EDTA treatment. The addition of salicylaldoxime or ammonium hydroxide to catfish serum indicated the alternate rather than the classical pathway of complement activation to be important in bactericidal activity against S . paratyphi . Bactericidal activity of catfish serum was labile when incubated at 47°C for 30 min., stable for at least 4 mo. at −80°C and could be absorbed with S . paratyphi at 25°C. Very minimal bactericidal activity was present in the descending portion of the first 13.7S peak with most activity being found in the descending portion of the second 7.1S peak and throughout the entire 3.4S peak after Sephadex G-200 catfish serum fractionation.

TL;DR: Fuzzy tree automata are applied to processing fuzzy tree representation of patterns based on syntactic pattern recognition and the results include that the class of fuzzy root-to-frontier recognizable ¿-trees is closed under intersection, union, and complementation.
Abstract: An approach of representing patterns by trees and processing these trees by fuzzy tree automata is described. Fuzzy tree automata are defined and investigated. The results include that the class of fuzzy root-to-frontier recognizable ?-trees is closed under intersection, union, and complementation. Thus, the class of fuzzy root-to-frontier recognizable ?-trees forms a Boolean algebra. Fuzzy tree automata are applied to processing fuzzy tree representation of patterns based on syntactic pattern recognition. The grade of acceptance is defined and investigated. Quantitative measures of ``approximate isosceles triangle,'' ``approximate elongated isosceles triangle,'' ``approximate rectangle,'' and ``approximate cross'' are defined and used in the illustrative examples of this approach. By using these quantitative measures, a house, a house with high roof, and a church are also presented as illustrative examples. In addition, three fuzzy tree automata are constructed which have the capability of processing the fuzzy tree representations of ``fuzzy houses,'' ``houses with high roofs,'' and ``fuzzy churches,'' respectively. The results may have useful applications in pattern recognition, image processing, artificial intelligence, pattern database design and processing, image science, and pictorial information systems.

Abstract: In a quasi-field experiment 479 subjects (beneficiaries) were observed as experimenters (benefactors) performed an altruistic act for them. Their responses were classified mainly into shows of gratitude, such as saying “Thank you.” Such amenities are expected in a traditional model of courtly chivalry, i.e., the door-opening ceremony. Experimenters were randomly assigned in a three-factor design, setting × sex of experimenter × sex of subject, with approximately 60 subjects per cell. The town-gown setting (university vs. community library) unexpectedly produced no difference. Traditional pairs (i.e., male benefactors and female beneficiaries) elicited most thanks. Estimated physical attractiveness of subject interacted strikingly with sex in affecting level of thanks shown. Most thankful were plain female beneficiaries for whom male benefactors held doors open. Overall, the data conformed best with a traditional model but also hinted at anomie (tradition in transition).

TL;DR: The Sharpsburg, Kentucky, 2011, earthquake was the second largest earthquake to have occurred in the United States, east of the Continental Divide, in the past 20 yr, having a seismic moment of 4.1 × 1023 dyne-cm.
Abstract: The Sharpsburg, Kentucky, earthquake was the second largest earthquake to have occurred in the United States, east of the Continental Divide, in the past 20 yr, having a seismic moment of 4.1 × 1023 dyne-cm. A surface-wave focal mechanism study defines a nodal plane striking N30°E, dipping 50°SE, and a nearly vertical nodal plane striking N60°W. P -wave first motion data indicate right-lateral motion on the nodal plane striking N30°E, with the pressure axes oriented east-west. These angles can be varied by ±10° without affecting the fit to the surface-wave data. The surface-wave solution is reinforced by a modeling of long-period seismograms at regional distances. The P, pP , and sP polarities and amplitudes from the short-period vertical component array stack at NORSAR are used together with six unambiguous short-period P -wave first motions recorded in North America to test whether it is possible to constrain focal mechanism solutions with such data. These solutions are compatible with the surface-wave solution. Waveform modeling of the NORSAR data suggests a source pulse duration of 1.0 sec and constrains the depth to 12.0 km. To match mb estimates from NORSAR and Canadian stations, t *, for teleseismic P , must be 0.7 and 0.5, respectively, when the synthetics are scaled using the surface-wave seismic moment. In spite of extensive coverage of the epicentral zone, fewer than 70 aftershocks were recorded. The largest aftershock and an mbLg = 2.2. Aftershock locations suggest that the nodal plane striking N30°E is the fault plane. An aftershock area of 30 to 50 km2 implies a stress drop of 2.8 to 6 bars and a dislocation of 2.0 to 3.4 cm. Because of the variety of studies performed, this earthquake is presently the best-studied eastern North American seismic event with well-constrained estimates of focal depth, focal mechanism and seismic moment, and indications of the duration of the source time function and upper mantle P -wave t *.

TL;DR: In this paper, the problem of testing slopes in k straight lines with heterogeneous variances is considered and the statistic Fβ is proposed and the null and non-null distributions of Fβ derived under normality assumption.
Abstract: This article considers the problem of testing slopes in k straight lines with'heterogeneous variances. The statistic Fβ is proposed and the null and non-null distributions of Fβ derived under normality assumption. The power function values are then approximated by Laguerre polynomial expansion for normal and non-normal universes. For the example given in Graybill ‘1976, p. 295’, it is shown that the Satterthwaite approximation provides a close approximation to the null and non-null distributions in all the cases; it is also shown that the Fβ test is quite robust with respect to departure from normality in the case of mixtures of two normals.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors make use of data available through one national legislative act, the Home Mortgage Disclosure Act, to ascertain if some census tracts in Memphis, Tennessee are experiencing lower than expected rates of mortgage lending from conventional and governmental sources due to the percent of their population which is black.
Abstract: There exists a long history of legislation at the national and state levels in the United States designed to have an impact on the home mortgage lending market. The present research makes use of data available through one national legislative act, the Home Mortgage Disclosure Act, to ascertain if some census tracts in Memphis, Tennessee are experiencing lower than expected rates of mortgage lending from conventional and governmental sources due to the percent of their population which is black. The data indicate that even after instituting objective controls, i.e., income, neighborhood conditions, and two dimensions of demand, the percent of the population which is black significantly affects (negatively) lending rates. These results are discussed in regard to (1) the implications for patterns of city growth and development, and (2) further legislative action required to make the study of such dis-crimination easier for a public charged with that responsibility.

TL;DR: In this paper, the relation between sibling structure (sex of siblings and birth order) and self-reported delinquency was examined and the processes of contrast and imitation, derived from research on sibling structure and sex roles, were used to guide this exploration.
Abstract: This exploratory article examines the relation between sibling structure (sex of siblings and birth order) and self-reported delinquency. The processes of contrast and imitation, conceptual notions derived from research on sibling structure and sex roles, are used to guide this exploration. Considerable variation in delinquency by sibling status was identified. There are indications that an interaction effect exists between birth order and sex of siblings relative to rates of delinquency.

TL;DR: In this article, the locus of control construct does not reflect a life-span developmental perspective due to its lack of congruence with basic principles of developmental interactionism, which is exemplified in three interrelated areas: (1) the meaning and representation of the "psychological situation", (2) the conceptualization and treatment of the time continuum (e.g. age), and (3) the nature and utilization of interactionism.
Abstract: This paper critiques the theoretical foundation of the locus of control construct from a life-span developmental perspective. It is argued that the locus of control construct, as currently used, does not reflect a life-span developmental perspective due to its lack of congruence with basic principles of developmental interactionism. This incongruence is exemplified in three interrelated areas: (1) the meaning and representation of the "psychological situation", (2) the conceptualization and treatment of the time continuum (e.g. age), and (3) the nature and utilization of interactionism. Revision is advocated in order to increase the validity of the locus of control construct within a life-span developmental orientation. Revision is also advocated in order to increase the conceptual clarity of this popular yet elusive construct. The paper concludes with a discussion of suggested revisions which include a life-span concept of situations, the concept of qualitative changes in perceived control, and a transac...

TL;DR: The cytochrome composition of membrane vesicles of Legionella pneumophila has been examined by low temperature and room temperature difference spectroscopy, and cytochromes of thec, b, a, andd types have been detected.
Abstract: The cytochrome composition of membrane vesicles ofLegionella pneumophila has been examined by low temperature (77°K) and room temperature difference spectroscopy, and cytochromes of thec, b, a, andd types have been detected. The presence ofc-type cytochrome was verified by formation of the pyridine ferrohemochromogen. A carbon monoxide-bindingc-type cytochrome was detected in CO-reduced minus reduced difference spectra and may also function in cytochromec reductase activity. Respiratory activities were determined for membrane vesicles, and reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) was the most rapidly oxidized substrate (199 nmol per min per mg protein), followed by succinate and malate. Cytochrome oxidase activity was demonstrated using ascorbate andN,N,N′,N′-tetramethyl-p-phenylenediamine (TMPD) (39 nmol per min per mg of protein). High levels of cyanide (K i =10 mM) inhibited NADH oxidation, while low levels of 2-heptyl-4-hydroxyquinoline-N-oxide (HQNO, 18 and 37 μM) inhibited NADH oxidation by nearly 90%. The respiratory chain appeared to be complex and terminated by at least three terminal oxidases. Superoxide dismutase activity, but not catalase activity, was detected in cellular extracts.

TL;DR: In the first 9 months of 1982, more than 17,000 earthquakes have occurred within a very confined shallow crustal region of north central Arkansas as discussed by the authors, which is the largest earthquake swarm ever recorded in the central or eastern United States.
Abstract: During the first 9 months of 1982, more than 17,000 earthquakes have occurred within a very confined shallow crustal region of north central Arkansas. This is the largest earthquake swarm ever recorded in the central or eastern United States. Lifelong residents recall no previous activity, nor are there any instrumental records of earlier shocks. Although located in an area of considerable geological complexity, no prominent geological structure or geophysical anomalies can be associated with the swarm area. Why, then, is this earthquake swarm occurring, and why is it occurring in this particular location? If these questions ultimately can be answered, the results will have significant implications for attempts to quantify seismic hazards and identify potential seismic risk zones in the central and eastern U.S.
