TL;DR: Examination of large numbers of cells and cysts of Azotobacter vinelandii revealed four structural details not reported previously: intine fibrils, intine vesicles, intin membrane, and microtubules.
Abstract: Vegetative cells and cysts of Azotobacter vinelandii 12837 were prepared for electron microscopy by several methods assumed to preserve structural details destroyed by techniques previously reported in the literature. Examination of large numbers of cells and cysts by these methods revealed four structural details not reported previously: intine fibrils, intine vesicles, intine membrane, and microtubules. The intine fibrils form a network in the gel-like homogeneous matrix of the CC2 layer. Intine vesicles which seem to originate in the cell wall complex of the central body are seen in the intine and exine of cysts. Analogous structures are found on vegetative cells. The intine is divided into two chemically distinct areas by the two-layered intine membrane. Microtubules, previously reported only in vegetative cells, were found in cysts.

TL;DR: Fifteen of 16 species of aquatic insects studied, including 5 aquatic Hemiptera, 5 caddisflies, 1 stonefly, 2 dobsonflies, and 2 mayflies, were found to be transporting 27 genera of viable small aquatic organisms, with Chlorella was the most common viable form being carried.
Abstract: Fifteen of 16 species of aquatic insects studied, including 5 aquatic Hemiptera, 5 caddisflies, 1 stonefly, 2 dobsonflies, and 2 mayflies, were found to be transporting 27 genera of viable small aquatic organisms. Three corixids carried 5 genera of blue-green algae, 11 green algae, 1 yellow-green alga, 2 protozoans, and fungi. Eudorina, representing colonial volvocalean algae, was found for the 1st time on field-exposed aquatic insects. The suitability of the Corixidae and Notonectidae as passive dispersal vehicles for small organisms is discussed. Only 1 of 6 caddisflies studied carried algae and protozoans, but that species, Hydropsyche orris Ross, carried 10 genera. Organisms taken in casual samplings of Plecoptera, Megaloptera, and Ephemeroptera are indicated. Excluding fungi, Chlorella was the most common viable form being carried, followed by Bodo, Nannochloris Chloroccoccum, and Microcystis, in order of frequency of occurrence. Unidentified fungi and Fusarium were carried by more than 75% of the 16 insects sampled and occurred in more than 50% of the 112 culture samples.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present evidence of a migration from Appalachia and Ozarkia to the Texas hills in the 1845-1880 period, guided by environmental perception, for the southern mountaineers sought lands in Texas similar to those they left behind and applied to the physical features of their new home the same descriptive place-names used in the Ozarks and Appalachians.
Abstract: A distinctive culture developed in the Appalachian South by the early 1800's, typified mainly by a preservation of archaic traits, including the persistence of a frontier way of life. The bearers of this culture spread to the Ozark-Ouachita area of Missouri and Arkansas in the first half of the nineteenth century. The present paper is a documentation of a second major transplantation of the southern mountaineer—to the hills of central Texas. Evidence of a migration from Appalachia and Ozarkia to the Texas hills in the 1845–1880 period is presented. This movement of people was guided at least in part by environmental perception, for the southern mountaineers sought lands in Texas similar to those they left behind and applied to the physical features of their new home the same descriptive place-names used in the Ozarks and Appalachians. Various characteristics of the economy, standard of living, folkways, cultural landscape, and educational levels in the Texas hill area are reminiscent of the highland South. The best interpretation of these similarities is to regard the hillsmen of Texas as hitherto ignored southwestern representatives of the southern mountaineer culture.

TL;DR: Witkin et al. as mentioned in this paper conducted a preliminary investigation to determine whether other spatial tests would show similar relationships with personality for 106 undergraduates, given the Guilford-Zimmerman Spatial Orientation Test, G-Z Spatial Visualization Test, and the 16 P.F.
Abstract: Witkin, et al. (1954, 1962) classified Ss into field-independent and field-dependent categories on the basis of their responses to perceptual tasks. It was also found that different personality characteristics were associated with these classifications. Field-independent Ss depended less on the field and more on themselves as a referent point in perceptual judgments than the field-dependent Ss. Independent Ss were generally more aggressive, more dominant, and required less environmental support for he i r decisions. Field-dependent Ss were found to be more accepting of authority, more anxious, and required more support from the environment. The present study was conducted as a preliminary investigation to determine whether other spatial tests would show similar relationships with personality for 106 undergraduates, given the Guilford-Zimmerman Spatial Orientation Test, Guilford-Zimmerman Spatial Visualization Test, and the 16 P.F. These spatial tests were chosen because the definitions of these abilities seemed closely parallel to those of field-independence. Although the Pearsonian rs were relatively low, several were significant. The traits correlated with G-Z Spatial Orientation were Factor E (Dominance) .36, Factor A (Cyclothpmia) M.26, and Factor B (General Ability) .24. G-Z Spatial Visualization was related to Factor E (Dominance) .36, Facror A (Cyclothymia) -.24, Factor B (General Ability) .33, Factor I (Sensitivity) -.27, and Factor L (Protention) .24. Ss were also divided into two groups designated field-independent and field-dependent on the basis of their scores on the spatial tests. The means of the two groups on the personality measures were: fieldindependent-Factor A 9.64, Factor B 9.14, Factor E 16.28, Factor I 10.00, and Factor L 10.35, Field-dependent-Factor A 11.20, Factor B 7.89, Factor E 13.25, Factor I 11.79, and Factor L 8.17. These relationships are congruous with previous findings. If these spatial tests do measure field-independence, a positive relationship would be expected between independence and dominance and a negative relationship with cyclothymia and sensitivity. These expectations were confirmed in this study. In general, these correlations support the concept that these spatial ability tests tend to measure the characteristics of field-independence and with further research may be useful in personality assessment.

TL;DR: It was concluded that epinephrine and nor-epinephrine may have differential effects on social dominance behavior, with the greatest amount of dominance behavior being shown undernor-epinphrine and the greatest submissive behavior under epine dopamine.
Abstract: Effects of epinephrine and nor-epinephrine on social dominance behavior in 24 male C57BL/6J mice were investigated. The social dominance hierarchy was created by placing pairs of Ss in a linear maze. The only way S could get to the goal box was by pushing the opposing S out. The dominant S pushed the submissive S out of the maze. After the dominance hierarchy was established, each S was placed in the dominance situation under each of the drug conditions, epinephrine and nor-epinephrine. The results showed that all conditions were significantly different from each other, with the greatest amount of dominance behavior being shown under nor-epinephrine and the greatest submissive behavior under epinephrine. It was concluded that epinephrine and nor-epinephrine may have differential effects on social dominance behavior.

TL;DR: The most significant work dealing with an episode of Negro participation in military operations prior to the Civil War is Benjamin Quarles' The Negro in the American Revolution as mentioned in this paper, which examined the whole Revolution, and then he wrote an account of the war pointing out the not inconsiderable contribution made by blacks to both sides as a combatant and non-combatant.
Abstract: Perhaps one of the least widely recognized facets of the Negro's role inAmerican history is his frequent participation in military affairs. Most Americans are aware, although somewhat vaguely, of the contributions he made during the Civil War and the conflicts which came later, but the Negro's role inmilitary matters prior to the 1860's has been overlooked. In recent years, however, this neglected area has received increased attention and a clearer picture of black involvement has emerged. A number of historians, among them Benjamin Quarles, have studied the part the black played in the preCivil War engagements and they have established that he played a much more vital role in those wars than previous generations recognized. The most significant work done which deals with an episode of Negro participation in military operations prior to the Civil War is Benjamin Quarles' The Negro in the American Revolution. 1 In his masterful study Professor Quarles meticulously examined the whole Revolution, and then he wrote an account of the war pointing out the not inconsiderable contribution made by blacks to both sides as a combatant and non-combatant. In preparing the background of his book, Quarles briefly alluded to the use of blacks in the colonial militias during the French and Indian War. 2 This topic, the use of the Negro in the militia prior to the 1770's, has not been examined inany great detail. A step in the right direction to correct this oversight can be made by studying Virginia's record in employing blacks in the French and Indian War. Virginia seems the best example to use for several reasons. First, Virginia played the leading role, among the southern colonies, in the war from its beginning to its conclusion. Furthermore, Virginia's large
