Abstract: Detailed studies of the Hunsruckschiefer (Rheinisches Schiefergebirge), collected from the Katzenberg Mine, southeast of Mayen (West Germany), indicate that the slaty cleavage fabric is represented by a variety of morphologic features. These include anastomosing thin films of layer silicates separating narrow lenses of rock matrix, the preferred dimensional orientation of flat grains of quartz, feldspar, and calcite occurring in the rock matrix bounded by films of layer-silicate minerals, and beardlike growth of chlorite, muscovite, and other minerals on those surfaces of quartz and other host minerals that make a high angle with the cleavage direction. Other features that help to define cleavage in slates are “seamlike” bunches of muscovite crowded with opaque minerals in metasiltstone layers and silty dikelike bodies in metaclaystone layers. There are also some veins of quartz-chlorite-calcite parallel to the direction of cleavage. Evidence of mobilization of silty and clayey materials along cleavage planes and the presence of silty dikes along the cleavage planes suggest that the cleavage-forming deformation began during the prelithification stage of the rocks. The deformation at this stage, besides developing seams of muscovite, also caused formation of weak anistropy by mechanical rotation of detrital micas to the planes of cleavage. The earliest feature to develop following lithification and early diagenesis is the beardlike growth of chlorite, muscovite, and rutile on different host minerals. The layer-silicate films appeared in the rocks following growth of chlorite-muscovite porphyroblasts, in the earliest metamorphism of the rocks. It is argued that these films evolved through the development of fractures (which also pass through the chlorite-muscovite porphyroblasts), coupled with re-crystallization following Riecke's principle. Further readjustments in the rocks caused flattening of minerals like quartz, feldspar, and calcite through solution. The veins of quartz-chlorite-calcite were the last to form in the rocks.

TL;DR: It has been observed that, although there was a death of primary spermatocytes in irradiated MPG-protected groups, quantitatively significant protection was afforded by this drug at all the 3 dose-levels studied.
Abstract: The radiosensitivity of primary spermatocytes in pachytene stage was estimated by counting the number of spermatids in the testes of control and MPG-treated mouse after exposure to 500, 1000 and 1500 R of Co60 gammarays. For this purpose, control and MPG-treated mice were killed 5 days after irradiation and countings of spermatids was made in stages I and II of the tubules. It has been observed that, although there was a death of primary spermatocytes in irradiated MPG-protected groups, quantitatively significant protection was afforded by this drug at all the 3 dose-levels studied.

Abstract: The paper reports the occurrence of floating islands in an impoundment infested with water hyacinth. Data on chemical composition of the islands, the surrounding water and the bottom soil of the impoundment are given, to show that the floating islands are rich reserves of nutrients and differ considerably from their surroundings. Some comments have also been made on their development and their importance in water resource management.

TL;DR: Tetra-coordinated diacetoxy-boron Schiff base derivatives of the type (AcO)2B(SB) have been synthesized in almost quantitative yields and in a state of sufficient purity by the equimolar ratio reactions of boric acid and Schiff bases in acetic anhydride medium.
Abstract: Tetra-coordinated diacetoxy-boron Schiff base derivatives of the type (AcO)2B(SB) (where SB− is the anion of the corresponding monofunctional bidentate Schiff base, SBH) have been synthesized in almost quantitative yields and in a state of sufficient purity by the equimolar ratio reactions of boric acid and Schiff bases in acetic anhydride medium. Even on mixing the reactants in higher molar ratio only 1:1 derivatives could be isolated. On the basis of elemental analyses, molecular weight determinations and conductance measurements and infrared and proton magnetic resonance spectra, the possible structures for the resulting new derivatives have been indicated.

Abstract: The problem of temperature distribution and heat transfer for laminar flow through two parallel porous disks of different permeability, has been investigated when the flow is entirely due to injection and/or suction at the two disks. Viscous dissipation terms have been included in the energy equation and the injection and/or suction velocities at the two disks are assumed to be small. The boundaries are kept at constant temperatures. The variation of temperature and Nusselt numbers at the two disks has been graphically depicted for various values of the injection and suction velocities.

TL;DR: In this paper, a search for anisotropy of Mossbauer factor ǫ in biotite single crystal is made by observing the angular variation of Mosbauer γ-absorption directed at various angles to the normal to the plane of the sheet and also by looking for the Goldanskii-Karyagin effect in the powdered specimen.
Abstract: A search for anisotropy of Mossbauer factor ƒ in biotite single crystal is made by observing the angular variation of Mossbauer γ-absorption directed at various angles to the normal to the plane of the sheet and also by looking for the Goldanskii-Karyagin effect in the powdered specimen. It is suggested that the absence of any detectable anisotropy of the ƒ-values in biotite, and indeed in other Fe containing compounds, in general, is possibly due to the large value of the ƒ-fraction. This is in contrast to tin- and rare- earth compounds where such anisotropy is detectable even at room temperatures.
