TL;DR: In this paper, the structure of one particular Xhosa family is described in some depth, i.e. Nokhonza, who is married to Bonisile, the son of Nina and Dike.
Abstract: In order to meaningfully illustrate some of the mechanics relating to the use of hlonipha among the Xhosa women of the family groups selected, the structure of one particular Xhosa family is described in some depth, i.e. Nokhonza, who is married to Bonisile, the son of Nina and Dike. Examples of the avoidance patterns of Nokhonza's great grandfather-in-law Saki, her grandfather-in-law, Ntlokwana, as well as her father- and mother-in-law are given. Thereafter the categorisation of avoidance rules which occur regularly in the core vocabulary are discussed. These categories include: 1. Phonological features, where clicks, glide consonants, consonant deletion and palatal plosives are mentioned. 2. The retention of common forms, which are divided into three sections: a. Common Bantu; b. Common Southern Bantu; c. Common Nguni. 3. Association of ideas could be divided into four sections: a. Shift in meaning; b. synonyms; c. descriptive phrases; and d. verbal derivatives. 4. Coinage of new words which is indicati...

TL;DR: In this paper, a comparison of MNDO and MINDO/3 calculations for saturated silicon-containing molecules, and with experimental values, for heats of formation, molecular geometries, charge distributions, and ionization potentials, is made.
Abstract: A comparison is made of MNDO and MINDO/3 calculations for saturated silicon-containing molecules, and with experimental values, for heats of formation, molecular geometries, charge distributions, and ionization potentials. Except for bond angles, it is found that with the published parameter values the MINDO/3 program gives more reliable results than MNDO. For unsaturated molecules, a comparison of bond lengths and stabilities of Si multiple bonds as given by the two programs and ab initio methods is made, and large discrepancies between predicted structures are pointed out. Some reasons for the dicrepancies are discussed.

TL;DR: In this article, the Boston Consulting Group's use of the experience curve as a strategic planning tool is explained and differences between learning curves, experience curves and economies of scale are highlighted.
Abstract: In this article, the first of a series of two articles, the Boston Consulting Group's use of the experience curve as a strategic planning tool is explained. The experience effect is described and differences between learning curves, experience curves and economies of scale are highlighted. The effect of experience on product costs is described: costs don't just decline, they must be managed. The effects of experience on costs and prices are quantified, and sources of the experience effect amenable to strategic management are given. Strategic implications for competitive interaction using company experience are considered. (The second article, to be published, will explode some myths associated with the idyll. Perrhic victories in the quest for market share will be described and practical problems in applying the experience effect will be highlighted).

TL;DR: In this article, the influence of partly Pauli-forbidden states on the width of resonances was investigated in the context of the fish bone optical model and it was shown that the part of the non-local interaction of the model which is due to the partly forbidden states represents a Pauli barrier which inhibits transitions between the inner and asymptotic regions and increases the lifetime of the resonances.
Abstract: The influence of partly Pauli-forbidden states on the width of resonances is stuied in the context of the fish bone optical model. A numerical study of α-α and α-16O scattering shows that the part of the nonlocal interaction of the model which is due to the partly forbidden states represents a Pauli barrier which inhibits transitions between the inner and asymptotic regions and increases the lifetime of resonances.

TL;DR: In this article, a conceptual framework based on the developmental approach and the life cycle concept is proposed for studying the dynamic small business firm. But, it is not a complete analysis of the problem of small business firms.
Abstract: The importance of small business enterprises in a free market economy is reflected by their contribution to economic activity, maintaining competitiveness, and provision of employment opportunities. Despite their economic importance, small business firms are characterized by a high failure rate, inter alia , owing to their unique problems. The independent entrepreneur accordingly has a definite need for aid - which is rendered to the small business sector in the majority of capitalistic countries, including South Africa. It would appear that research in the field of small business has, almost without exception, been conducted in an unsystematic and fragmentary manner. In this paper a conceptual framework, which is based on the developmental approach and the life cycle concept, is advanced. By relating the specific problems of small business firms to the stage of development of the firm in a strategic sense, a systematic approach for studying the dynamic small business firm ensues. This approach will also serve as a conceptual framework for: research into small business firms; developmental aid to the small business sector; development and training of entrepreneurs; financing considerations by the financial sector; and strategy formulation and implementation for the small business firm as such.

TL;DR: In this article, the equilibrium configuration of overlayers in the Nishiyama-Wassermann orientation is determined by numerical energy minimization, and the results suggest that, for metals on metals with relatively strong adsorbate-substrate bonding, overlayers are either completely pseudomorphic or completely incoherent, the occurrence of one-dimensional coherence being rare.

TL;DR: Gerard's visit to Europe in 1975 as mentioned in this paper was intended to inform local scholars about his approach to comparative literature and literary history, as well as to promote the vernacular literatures from both the creative and scholarly sides.
Abstract: The visit resulted from his Four African Literature: Xhosa, Southern Sotho, Zulu, Amharic, various other publications, private correspondence and from an interview during a short visit to Europe in 1975. The main objectives of his visit were to inform local scholars about his approach to comparative literature and literary history, as well as to promote the vernacular literatures from both the creative and scholarly sides. His publications and lectures together conveyed the necessity that local scholars should participate in historical-comparative work, and that comparison should be done on the widest possible scale. The present writer argues that this ideal does not discharge the vernacular scholar from the responsibility to describe and evaluate the literature he knows best. For this it is imperative that he should come to grips with scholarly practices in Africa and the outside world. On the short term Gerard's visit is bound to foster profound introspection, while on the medium and long term, vernacul...

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors discuss the major challenges facing South African managers in the human resources area, together with possible solutions to these problems, and propose strategies and plans to prevent a greater crisis.
Abstract: In view of the importance of the human asset to the South African economy, the major crises facing South African managers in the human resources area are discussed, together with possible solutions to these problems. The six major components of the human resources crisis, as perceived by the author, are related in a matrix to 11 major challenges or opportunities for management, in the handling of these problems. The crisis components discussed are: actual and potential large-scale black unemployment; a shortage of skilled and semi-skilled labour; a shortage of supervisory and middle management; socio-political wage pressure; strikes; and problems relating to cultural differences. The challenges facing business include: the promotion of entrepreneurship; developing greater understanding of cultural differences; development and retraining; skills training; selling the free enterprise system; the creation of jobs; effective delegation, communication, control and feedback; improved union negotiation; improved industrial relations; increased productivity; and the development of strategies and plans to prevent a greater crisis.

TL;DR: The Buthelezi Commission as mentioned in this paper suggests that a new political order might be established for the Natal/KwaZulu region on the basis of a new constitutional arrangement, and suggests that certain constitutional checks and balances of power be introduced, and among those suggested are a bill of rights and a totally independent judiciary under which all legislation would be testable in courts.
Abstract: The Buthelezi Commission Report suggests that a new political order might be established for the Natal/KwaZulu region on the basis of a new constitutional arrangement. The Report suggests that certain constitutional checks and balances of power be introduced, and among those suggested are a bill of rights and a "totally independent judiciary" under which "all legislation would be testable in courts." Although the Report draws attention but briefly to the subject of judicial review of legislation, discussion of this feature of it has relevance beyond the borders of Natal/KwaZulu and will hopefully stimulate interest in this important dimension of constitutionalism. In this article the author's remarks on the subject go beyond the geographical and political parameters of the Report, in support of those concerned with the future of greater Southern Africa.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors highlight pyrrhic victories in the quest for market share and ask six key questions that need to be answered before adopting an experience-driven strategy.
Abstract: Strategies based on the experience curve effect require that predatory price cutting leads to enhanced market share and an increasingly competitive cost structure vis-a-vis the competition. The company that rides the experience curve to the bank has cost advantages, pricing discretion and reaps handsome profits. Corporate graveyards are littered with the corpses of companies who have adopted too naive an approach to, and too simplistic an acceptance of, the concepts first pioneered by the Boston Consulting Group. This, the second of two articles on the experience curve, highlights pyrrhic victories in the quest for market share and asks six key questions that need to be answered before adopting an experience-driven strategy. Likewise 12 problem areas in the application of this approach are identified.

Abstract: Despite the problems raised in the article, the author was of the opinion that the Foreign States Immunities Act of 1981 would work. Most of the instances in which the question of immunity would arise were adequately covered in the act. However, it was regrettable that a more uniformly objective approach was not followed during the drafting of the Act.

TL;DR: The concept of the width of the hypnotic relationship represents a theoretical shift from an intrapsychic viewpoint to an understanding of hypnosis as an interaaional phenomenon.
Abstract: Recent research (2, 3) has- emphasized the usefulness of an interactional approach to hypnosis. When hypnosis is understood from this point of view, it becomes clear that some of the traditional concepts and some of the terms used to describe these concepn need to be revised. One of these is the idea of the "depth" of hypnosis, which is merely a concept and not an ultimate reality (5). The idea of a depth dimension of hypnosis originares from the psychoanalytic view of the unconscious. Here the conception is that, as hypnosis progresses, the subject goes "deeper" into his unconscious mind. This conceptualization does not have any meaning within the interactional explanation of hypnosis. Even when hypnosis is approached traditionally, researchers find it necessary to attach various behavioural, that is, observable, indices to the different proposed levels of depth. Messages (verbal and npn-verbal behaviour) from the subject are used to infer certain levels of depth. For instance, glove anaesthesia is chought to be an indication of a medium trance depth (1). The interactional view sees these same messages as statements about the hypnotistsubject relationship (4). As such they form part of the negotiation for the definition of the relationship that goes on between hypnotist and subject (3). As the relationship progressively becomes defined as hypnotic by the hypnotist, the subject's responsive behaviour increasingly confirms this definition, indicating increasing acceptance of the hypnotic relationship. In this way the nature of the relationship is mutually defined. The murual acceptance of the narure of the relationship involves a tacit agreement as to which behaviours (hypnotic phenomena) could occur within the bounds of the relationship. The wider these bounds, the more phenomena could be exhibited by the subject in that particular hypnotic relationship. From this perspective it becomes more appropriate to talk about the width of the hypnotic rellrtionrhip rather than the depth of hypnosis. The concept of the width of the hypnotic relationship represents a theoretical shift from an intrapsychic viewpoint to an understanding of hypnosis as an interaaional phenomenon.

TL;DR: A better understanding of the manner in which Matsepe portrayed his characters, depends on a number of factors as discussed by the authors, such as the historical and traditional backgrounds of the novels, and the use of metaphor as a vehicle of character delineation.
Abstract: A better understanding of the manner in which Matsepe portrays his characters, depends on a number of factors. First one must take into account the historical and traditional backgrounds of the novels. This will enable one to have a clear picture of the world in which his characters operate. Secondly it will be fruitful for one to consider how effectively Matsepe uses name-giving to bring out subtle shades of his characters' traits. One of the most important devices that Matsepe uses in character portrayal is metaphor. This device is evenly used as a vehicle of character delineation in almost all his works. Finally, one has to take cognisance of Matsepe's use of the narrating character. In all his works this figure plays a central role. Thus any indepth study of Matsepe's character delineation must include the narrating character.

TL;DR: In this article, a comparison of the morphology of the demonstrative according to Paroz, Van Eeden, Doke, Ferreira and Ziervolgel is undertaken.
Abstract: In this discussion, a comparison of the morphology of the demonstrative according to Paroz, Van Eeden, Doke, Ferreira and Ziervolgel is undertaken. A sharp difference is seen between Ferreira's exposition and all the other linguists, as to how the root is derived from the class prefix. The main interest is, however, on the semantics of the demonstrative and the naming of the three positions of the second set according to its semantic significance. In this way it can be distinguished between two sets of demonstratives, viz. the indicative demonstrative and the referential demonstrative. The former merely indicates positions of relative proximity, while the latter refers to known or previously mentioned objects with slightly different semantic shades. Consequently, the three positions of this set were accordingly named the interrogative, the relative/referential, and the recollective demonstrative, respectively. Room has been left for further investigation to confirm or negate the above exposition.

TL;DR: A survey was undertaken to assess the scope of certain mental health problems in work organizations and ways these are being dealt with by management as mentioned in this paper, and the general pattern emerging from the data reflects a growing awareness of and concern for problems of this nature, particularly in the area of alcoholism.
Abstract: A survey was undertaken to assess the scope of certain mental health problems in work organizations and ways these are being dealt with by management. The general pattern emerging from the data reflects a growing awareness of and concern for problems of this nature, particularly in the area of alcoholism. This is closely followed by emotional problems but a good deal of uncertainty in the area of drug abuse is apparent. Concerted effort on the part of industry and community is required to mould positive attitudes and ad hoc co-ordinated policies and programs.
