TL;DR: Various applications of correspondence analysis to biomedical data are presented, including an initial simple example using data on the relationship between headache types and age, which produces a geometric map showing how the relative frequencies of headache types change with age.
Abstract: Various applications of correspondence analysis to biomedical data are presented The basic concepts of profile, mass and chi-squared distance are introduced in an initial simple example using data on the relationship between headache types and age The main result of the correspondence analysis is a geometric map of this relationship showing how the relative frequencies of headache types change with age A second example maps the association between personality types and various medical diagnostic groups, while a third example deals with categorical rating scales such as an efficacy scale for a medication or a scale of pain A final example illustrates the more complex situation when several categorical variables are involved using test data on a collection of bacterial isolates, with the object of comparing bacterial types and understanding the inter-relationships of the different tests

TL;DR: In this paper, a modelo for politica linguistica in Sudafriko post the Apartheid crisis is presented, in which el ingles se convierta en el principal idioma oficial.
TL;DR: A method is discussed for finding the transformations that mutually superpose an arbitrary number of structures in the least-squares sense given specified atom-to-atom correspondence.
Abstract: The study of families of protein structures is important in analysing the results of NMR structure determinations and in investigating mechanisms of molecular evolution at the level of conformation. A method is discussed for finding the transformations that mutually superpose an arbitrary number of structures in the least-squares sense given specified atom-to-atom correspondence.

TL;DR: Nuances underlying the subversion of an empowering concept such as primary health care, and some general rules about the perception of psychology that are likely to apply in South Africa and other developing countries are discussed.
Abstract: Psychology functions within the context of South Africa's ruling ideology, resistance discourse and national health care philosophy. Using a psychological skills training programme in the Soweto Community Health Centre System in Johannesburg as a case study, the authors examine how the introduction of psychological services in primary health care is both enabled and constrained by state ideology, medical hegemony, professional interests and personal perceptions. Nuances underlying the subversion of an empowering concept such as primary health care, and some general rules about the perception of psychology that are likely to apply in South Africa and other developing countries, are discussed. In Part 2 (this issue) this etic perspective is extended into an emic exploration of how these factors impact upon the interpersonal processes and practices of nursing staff in the health care system.

TL;DR: Significant clinical tolerance to side effects developed within 20 to 33 h after CBZ‐CR dosage during a period in which the mean CBZ blood levels remained virtually unchanged, without the development of severe clinical side effects.
Abstract: The neurotoxic effect of acute doses of carbamazepine controlled-release (CBZ-CR) divitabs (800, 1,200, and 1,600 mg) was assessed on clinical, psychomotor, electrophysiological, and cognitive parameters of brain function in 10 healthy volunteers in a double-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled, phase I study. Significant changes compared to placebo were demonstrated for the clinical scales, ataxia (AT), convergence of the near-point (CNP), peak saccadic velocity (PSV), critical flicker fusion (CFF), spectral analysis of the EEG, and brainstem auditory evoked potential (BAEP) tests. Digit repetition, digit symbol substitution, Sternberg memory scanning time, Sternberg choice reaction time, saccadic latency, and saccadic accuracy showed important negative findings. Significant clinical tolerance to side effects developed within 20 to 33 h after CBZ-CR dosage during a period in which the mean CBZ blood levels remained virtually unchanged. CBZ-CR, 800, 1,200, and 1,600 mg yielded low, medium, and high therapeutic blood levels, respectively, for +10 to +33 h after dosage without the development of severe clinical side effects.

TL;DR: In this article, it is argued that the percentage of literate people during the first century was very low and some facets of the uses of Greco-Roman literacy are discussed and possible implications for New Testament research are briefly presented.
Abstract: Knowledge of the extent of Greco-Roman literacy and the uses of writing, is pertinent to a valid contextualisation of the New Testament writings. In this article it is argued that the percentage of literate people during the first century was very low. Some facets of the uses of Greco-Roman literacy are discussed and possible implications for New Testament research are briefly presented.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors compare the situation in South Africa to the recommendations of the 1977 Tbilisi international conference on environmental education, with reference to the human environment, education, research, and incorporation in the educational system.
Abstract: In this article, the authors compare the situation in South Africa to the recommendations of the 1977 Tbilisi international conference on environmental education, with reference to the human environment, education, research, and incorporation in the educational system. The needs and priorities of environmental education that emerged from this conference were addressed at the Moscow international conference, held 10 years later. The authors relate the situation in South Africa to the Moscow conference proceedings, which include such aspects as international cooperation in the field of environmental education, environmental education as part of the entire educational process, and the interdisciplinary nature of environmental education. The authors list some of the international strategies for environmental education and training in future years that were proposed at the Moscow conference and discuss their relevance to South Africa.

TL;DR: In this paper, the status and function of Zulu in the new South Africa is speculated on based on the language ideology framework as propounded by Juan Cobarrubias and modified by T.G. Reagan.
Abstract: In this article the possible status and function of Zulu in the new South Africa is speculated on. The discussion is based on the language ideology framework as propounded by Juan Cobarrubias and modified by T.G. Reagan. Four ideological orientations are considered, namely: internationalization, linguistic assimilation, pluralism and vernacularization. In conclusion, it is felt that the status and function of Zulu will be determined mainly within the concept of linguistic pluralism and vernacularization. Motivation is given for the elimination of the other two possibilities.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors derived relaxation equations for a model in which the proton jumps among three potential minima in the vicinity of adjacent quinonoid and hydroxyl oxygens to account for the observed temperature dependence of the T 1 and T 1ρ results.
Abstract: Proton spin-lattice relaxation times in the laboratory and rotating frames of the B and C modifications of naphthazarin have been measured as functions of temperature and frequency. No noticeable differences between the results of the two modifications could be detected. A relaxation model in which the proton jumps between two potential minima in the vicinity of adjacent quinonoid and hydroxyl oxygens, fails to account for the observed temperature dependence of the T 1 and T 1ρ results. Relaxation equations have been derived for a model in which the proton jumps among three potential minima. These equations give much better fits to the experimental results.

TL;DR: In the absence of organizational changes to reduce the ambiguity of role definitions and power relationships between nurses, matrons, doctors and management, the development of holistic and empowering primary health care cannot prosper.
Abstract: In this paper the authors extend the predominantly etic analysis of the Soweto Community Health Centre System's macrostructural and managerial factors presented in Part 1 (Seedat & Nell, this issue), to an emic analysis at the microlevel of interpersonal processes and practices among nursing staff. Content analysis of interviews with 18 nurses one year after they had completed a psychological skills-training programme revealed five key constraints on the development of nurse autonomy and integration of psychological with biomedical treatment modalities: (1) Dichotomization of biomedical and psychosocial treatment modalities; (2) Inadequately explained instructions; (3) Contradictions between official roles and organizationally determined powerlessness; (4) Time-limited effects of psychological skills training on patient referral patterns; and (5) Invasion of nurse-patient boundaries by superiors. Positive effects of training were evident in only two areas: (a) Improved conflict resolution skills in relati...

TL;DR: The authors argued that the explicit use of social science models, even so-called cross-cuItural models, does not necessarily help to eliminate anachronistic and ethnocentric interpretations of New Testament texts.
Abstract: It is argued that the explicit use of social science models, even so-called cross-cuItural models, does not necessarily help to eliminate anachronistic and ethnocentric interpretations of New Testament texts. A historical approach (aim of interpretation) that does not assume commensurability between different cultures, which emphasises the native's point of view, has more potential in this respect.

TL;DR: In this paper, it was shown that the lowest order of the hyperspherical-harmonic expansion method, the hypercentral approximation, is an excellent approximation for confining quark-quark potentials.
Abstract: We show that it is in principle possible to determine the quark-quark potential, in the nonrelativistic potential model, from the baryon spectrum. The method we propose is based on the fact that the lowest order of the hyperspherical-harmonic expansion method, the hypercentral approximation, is an excellent approximation for confining quark-quark potentials. However, our method applies to all cases where this assumption is valid. Using standard inverse spectrum techniques adapted to our problem we invert the baryon spectrum to obtain the hypercentral potential in the hyperradius of the three-quark system. By means of a new exact relation based on the Abel integral equation, we can invert the hypercentral potential to determine the quark-quark potential. A first application of this new method to the inversion of thes-state baryon spectrum demonstrates in a model-independent way the inability of nonrelativistic two-quark potentials to reproduce the Roper resonance without violating the QCD-motivated concavity requirement.

TL;DR: It is shown that gamma-linolenic acid at concentrations of 10, 20 and 50 micrograms/ml has a dose-responsive inhibitory effect on mitosis in osteogenic sarcoma cells after exposure for 24, 48 and 72 hours, respectively.
Abstract: In this study it is shown that gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) at concentrations of 10, 20 and 50 micrograms/ml has a dose-responsive inhibitory effect on mitosis in osteogenic sarcoma cells after exposure for 24, 48 and 72 hours, respectively. GLA also has marked effects on the morphology of the nucleus and nucleolus of these cells. Decreased silver staining of nuclear phosphoproteins was also evident in GLA-supplemented cells.

TL;DR: In this paper, a distinction is made between Keyne's employment of user cost at the micro- and macro-levels, and the way total income is generated in an input-output table is shown to correspond to the procedure of substracting user cost from total sales.
Abstract: A distinction is made between Keyne's employment of user cost at the micro- and macrolevels. Keynes includes user cost when establishing the profit maximizing position of an individual firm, and excludes it when examining events at the macrolevel. His treatment of user cost is illustrated with the aid of an input-output table. The way total income is generated in an input-output table is shown to correspond to Keyne's procedure of substracting user cost from total sales. A derivation of the aggregate supply curve is presented in which the micro and macro aspects of user cost are highlighted. In the aggregate supply schedule diagram, the microrole helps to select points along the (horizontal) employment axis. In its macroeconomic capacity, user cost is concerned with movements along the (vertical) aggregate supply price axis.

TL;DR: In this article, the metaphore of l'Evangile de Jean (vraie lumiere, Bon Pasteur, vraie vigne...) is considered to be le meilleur metaphore.

TL;DR: In this article, it was shown that the removal of Pauli forbidden s-states in the local α-α potential of Buck et al., by means of successive supersymmetric transformations, leads to a simultaneous removal of groups of "unphysical" states of the 3α- and 4α-systems, but that the remaining states are largely unaffected.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors describe management development techniques and programmes offered in South Africa and the kinds of institutions and organizations that offer them, and suggest that surprisingly little Black management development has been accomplished, and what has been done has often not addressed the marginal position in which many Black managers find themselves.
Abstract: Seeks to provide understanding of the challenges facing management development in South Africa in the next decade: a desperate shortage of managerial skills; a particular need for trained Black managers to fill the opportunities that are opening up. Describes management development techniques and programmes offered in South Africa, and the kinds of institutions and organizations that offer them. Suggests that, despite the need, surprisingly little Black management development has been accomplished, and what has been done has often not addressed the marginal position in which many Black managers find themselves, nor used effective techniques which adequately match local culture. Draws on the authors′ research, and personal work experience in South Africa, for recommendations for improving South African management development programmes in the 1990s.

TL;DR: The Wronskian and inversion-type equivalent local potentials for the energy dependent nonlocal interaction induced by the coupling of the elastic to the nonelastic channels are investigated numerically and their Perey factors are found to be closer to unity than those associated with exchange-type nonlocal potentials.
Abstract: Various equivalent local potentials and their Perey factors are discussed. The Wronskian and inversion-type equivalent local potentials for the energy dependent nonlocal interaction induced by the coupling of the elastic to the nonelastic channels are investigated numerically. Their Perey factors are found to be closer to unity than those associated with exchange-type nonlocal potentials.
