46 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors introduce the principle welding methods available for joining thermoplastic composites, and give initial results of their use for the joining of an advanced continuous fibre thermoplastics.

29 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the engineering properties of epoxy-coated bars are presented. But, they do not consider the effect of weathering on the properties of the epoxy coatings.

16 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, a state of simple shear is achieved in a butt-joint of coaxial hollow cylinders, which is suitable for the determination of shear moduli and stressstrain-diagrams of adhesives in the bondline.

14 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: The last 10 years have seen an almost explosive development in the market for sanitary sealants as discussed by the authors, due to an increase in the use of sealants per cubic meter of interior space, due to increased numbers of joints resulting from modular designs.

13 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the authors summarise test work on cement-bonded particleboards carried out at the Princes Risborough Laboratory over the last fifteen years and conclude that their outstanding merit lies in extending the application of wood based panels into areas where there is either a high risk of fire or moisture.

12 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: The platinised titanium type of electrode is a well-proven high current density anode for marine cathodic protection systems but to date has not been intended as an anode buried directly in the ground as mentioned in this paper.

8 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the authors examined the background to the adoption of explosion-bonded transition joints, and a review is given of the need for the material, the method of its manufacture, the techniques employed during fabrication, evaluation of the joints by mechanical testing, corrosion resistance and possible problems associated with its use.

8 citations

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the results of tensile and bending tests carried out on specimens of raffia bamboo are presented, and the test results show that the material is capable of attaining an ultimate tensile strength of about 150 n/sq mm and a modulus of elasticity in tension of about 24 kn /sq mm These strength properties compare favorably with those of most natural timber species and also some oriented polymers used in fibre reinforced concrete.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the condensation process at the external surface of windows is analyzed and a quantitative basis for predicting atmospheric water vapour mass condensation rate has been developed, which has been shown to be useful in assessing window potential for external surface condensation and means to predict it at the early stage of the design where most irreversible decisions are made.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the effectiveness of three steel cleaning procedures in terms of whether the reinforcement continues to corrode after completion of repairs was investigated, and the results showed that the durability of the repair is sensitive to the steel cleaning procedure and that for steel with clusters of fine pits none was effective in preventing further corrosion.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the flexible pipe theory lends itself very well to the concept of thin walled plastics pipes predicting a 100-year design life, and practical experiences are studied as well as other dimensioning aspects, such as buckling, impact resistance and minimum wall thickness.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the development and full-scale testing of a system of fire-resistant glazing protected by automatic sprinklers is described and the test results and the system requirements, benefits and limitations are described.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, a simple BS 812 technique was used with normal weight aggregates and with five lightweight aggregates used for simple water absorption tests and it was shown that the disturbance during mixing of ‘saturated’ high-porosity aggregates can lead to emission of significant volumes of water.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors present and discuss results gained from seawater exposure experiments and supporting laboratory studies of fouling/corrosion relationships on BS4360 Grade 50D steel and various copper-nickel alloys.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the analysis and design method of jute fabric reinforced unpaved roads on clay subgrade is presented, and constitutive relations for two grades of Jute fabrics and a silty clay sub-grade soil is established.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the optical measurement of smoke from burning sheets of building materials used widely in the building industry, including plywood, cardboard, acrylic, phenol-formaldehyde, polyethylene, polycarbonate and nylon, was performed using a modified NBS chamber.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: A rotating pipe drum test has been developed to assess the abrasion performance of plastics pipes to an extent where most test variables are understood as discussed by the authors, and the test may also be used as a Slurry Rating Index, measuring both abrasive nature and attrition of particles in conditions similar to those in service.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the authors reviewed recent research on the problems caused by deicing salt penetration into concrete bridges and discussed the detection of defects, crack repair, concrete repair materials, bridge deck waterproofing, protective coatings and cathodic protection.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, experiments are carried out to improve the load bearing characteristics of flyash with the help of geofabrics, and the results are promising and it will be possible to ascertain an economical procedure for the use of reinforced and treated flyash in different civil engineering works.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors used metakaoline blended cement associated with A.R. glass to construct a new GRC with much improved mechanical properties and aspect qualities, not affected by long term embrittlement or strength loss.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: Hycar © Reactive Liquid Polymers (RLP) are not unfamiliar to epoxy technologists as mentioned in this paper, and they serve as effective elastomeric modifiers for formulated epoxy compositions.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this paper, the authors provided further information on relative permeability of concrete, using the previously described test in the laboratory, characterised in terms of a parameter k, the slope of the log pressure/time decay plot, which is shown to be a good indicator of change.

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the pipe resins that are commonly used in the USA are compared with respect to their relative life times, and the improvement in the currently used materials compared to the older material from the same producer have been measured.

Journal ArticleDOI

Journal ArticleDOI
TL;DR: In this article, the authors consider the preservatives most widely used and their areas of application and comment on the future for wood preservation in Europe as it will be affected by standardisation after 1992, and observe that European legislation covering timber preservatives is currently very uncoordinated under different national requirements.

Journal ArticleDOI
