TL;DR: The effectiveness of the acceleration techniques known as coarse mesh re-balance and the synthetic method is examined for the iterative processes of transport codes and these two methods are shown to be equivalent in a certain sense.
Abstract: The effectiveness of the acceleration techniques known as coarse mesh re-balance and the synthetic method is examined for the iterative processes of transport codes. These two methods are shown to be equivalent in a certain sense. Analysis is presented in homogeneous slab geometry which gives a necessary condition for the convergence of the synthetic method. Stable versions of these methods are developed, and numerical results comparing their effectiveness with that of Chebychev acceleration are presented.
