TL;DR: The reported incidence of sepsis is increasing, likely reflecting aging populations with more comorbidities, greater recognition, and, in some countries, reimbursement-favorable coding.
Abstract: Sepsis, a syndrome of physiologic, pathologic, and biochemical abnormalities induced by infection, is a major public health concern, accounting for more than $20 billion (5.2%) of total US hospital costs in 2011.The reported incidence of sepsis is increasing, likely reflecting aging populations with more comorbidities, greater recognition, and, in some countries, reimbursement-favorable coding. Although the true incidence is unknown, conservative estimates indicate that sepsis is a leading cause of mortality and critical illness worldwide. JMS 2015;18(2):162-164

TL;DR: In the nursing profession across the Western world, women outnumber men by a ratio of 10 to 1 as mentioned in this paper and the profession is often seen as being synonymous with being female and with femininity.
Abstract: In the nursing profession across the Western world, women outnumber men by a ratio of 10 to 1. The profession is often seen as being synonymous with being female and with femininity. This study aimed to illustrate the gendered aspects of career choice for men who choose to nurse and how a masculine identity can be negotiated within the profession. Using a qualitative interpretive approach, interviews were carried out with 18 male nurses. The findings indicate contradictions and difficulties for men in identifying with the profession and as men. Little encouragement is given to men to join the profession, and for men who have chosen to nurse, there is an attempt to distance themselves from traditional motivations for choosing nursing such as caring and vocationalism. This has implications for the recruitment and retention of men into the profession and also points to a need to examine the relationship of nursing to gendered concepts.

Abstract: This study examined the extent to which the Local Content Policy has impacted on human capital development and sustainable business performance in the Nigerian Oil and GasIndustry, following the enactment of enabling legislation. Primary data were employed, which were obtained through the administration of structured questionnaire to purposively selected oil servicing companies in Niger Delta, the home to more than eighty percent of the indigenous oil companies in Nigeria. The results showed that Local Content Policy had significant impact on the development of human capital in the Oil and Gas Industry. There was a paradigm shift in the educational capacity of the Management of the oil servicing firms as over 70% of them had at least first degree or its equivalent. Through oil sector linkages, the firms had strengthened their absorptive capacities to internalize the technological and managerial skills that flow to them. This had consequently boosted the business performance of indigenous oil servicing firmsin terms of growth in profit, market share and returned on investment (ROI). The study concluded that the Local Content Policy had achieved significant success in enhancing the development of human capital which in turn positively influenced business performance of indigenous companies in the Oil and Gas Industry in Nigeria.

TL;DR: In this paper, the potential for cloud computing in small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in developing countries (DCs) is considered and the current state of research is assessed in a review of 95 research articles drawn from journals which are both peer-reviewed and academic.
Abstract: Research in cloud computing is undergoing rapid growth since its evolution less than a decade ago. This paper contributes to the understanding of this growing research area and by this, considers the potential for cloud computing in small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in developing countries (DCs). The current state of research is assessed in a review of 95 research articles drawn from journals which are both peer-reviewed and academic. To do this, a framework is developed to categorise and analyse the research according to a socio-technical spectrum, identifying levels of analysis and differentiating research activity according to a lifecycle model that incorporates the requirement, needs and desires, adoption, use and adaptation and impact of SMEs in the cloud. The highlights of research in the area to date is an unbalanced use of quantitative approaches and lack of in depth use of case studies to form the basis of theorising in the area. Some gaps are also identified pointing to the fact that issues concerning the extent of impact of cloud computing in SMEs have been ignored, whilst adoption is widely covered. To support in correcting these disparities in the literature, this paper identifies key research gaps relating to conceptual approaches, methodologies, issues addressed and finally provides pointers for future research directions.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors examined the impact of structural empowerment on organizational citizenship behavior-organization (henceforth, OCBO) and job performance and further examined the me- diating eect of job burnout in the relationships of Structural empowerment, Organizational Citizenship Behaviour and Job performance.
Abstract: The banking sector employees are usually exposed to potential job burnout which impacts their employee performance. This study examined the impact of structural empowerment on organizational citizenship behavior-organization (henceforth, OCBO) and job performance and further examined the me- diating eect of job burnout in the relationships of structural empowerment, OCBO and job performance. In this study, data from 282 employees was taken from four banks: both public and private sectors. Two stage sampling technique was carried out to collect data. In the rst stage probability cluster sampling and in the second stage convenience sampling was used. Dierent data analysis techniques like correla- tion, regression analysis, were used to test the four hypotheses of the study. Findings show that there are strong positive relationships of structural empowerment with OCBO and job performance. It has also proved that job burnout strongly mediates the relationship of structural empowerment and organizational citizenship-behavior (OCBO) and weakly mediates the relationship between structural empowerment and job performance. The ndings would help the HR executives of the organizations to formulate future devel- opment to combat the burnout and ensure eective overall performance of employees through structurally

TL;DR: In this article, the extent and content of environmental disclosures across sectors according to their environmental impact were analyzed and compared in a cross-sectoral analysis of environmental disclosure, data were collected from annual reports and analyzed using content analysis.
Abstract: The purpose of this study is to extend organizational legitimacy arguments by analyzing the extent and content of environmental disclosures across sectors according to their environmental impact. For this purpose, the industrial sectors were sorted into three groups as high impact sectors, medium impact sectors and low impact sectors. In the legitimacy theory context, business in high impact industry sectors would be expected to give more attention and importance to environmental disclosures than business in medium and low impact industry sectors. In this context four testable dimensions of environmental disclosure were systematically analyzed and compared in this study: presence of environmental disclosure; presentation of environmental disclosure; location of environmental disclosure; environmental disclosure items. The sample of this study consisted of 223 companies quoted on Istanbul Stock Exchange. In order to carry out a cross-sectoral analysis of environmental disclosures, data were collected from annual reports and analyzed using content analysis. The results of this study fail to confirm legitimacy theory as an explicator of environmental disclosure in the Turkey case. The sample companies operating in medium impact sectors have a higher tendency to disclose environmental information and to provide a stand-alone environmental report and separate environmental section in their annual reports than companies in high and low impact sectors in Turkey.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors provide an updated review of the literature on organizational factors and turnover intention and present the practical implications as well as academic contributions for turnover intention among registered nurses.
Abstract: The employees’ turnover intention is one of the most popular subjects in the field of Human Resource Management. Moreover, the turnover problematic phenomenon is also still one of the most costly issues for HR managers in their efforts on human capital. Although turnover intention has been one of the most researched phenomenon in Human Resource Management (HRM), researchers still return to restudying this phenomenon because of its impact on service quality in any organization, moreover turnover intention has direct and indirect costs, both costs are critical, complicated, and serious. While the phenomenon of turnover intention in the nursing sector has a more serious impact than on any other sector, it has been recognized in both developing and developed countries. Organizational factors (Leadership, Pay Level, and Advancement Opportunities) have excessive impact on turnover intention among employees. Thus, this conceptual paper focuses on the organizational factors as the determinant of turnover intention among registered nurses. Approach: The literature was explored to acknowledge the accessible relationships among cross organizational factors (Leadership, Pay Level, and Advancement Opportunities) and turnover intention among registered nurses public hospitals. Conclusions: This conceptual paper provides an updated review of the literature on organizational factors and turnover intention. The practical implications as well as academic contributions were also presented.

TL;DR: In this article, a yearlong observational study of participants in a "Live Action Role Playing" group called "Dagorhir," using the manhood acts perspective, focus on how masculinity is constructed among low-status, subordinate men who self-define as "nerds".
Abstract: Based on a yearlong observational study of participants in a “Live Action Role Playing” group called “Dagorhir,” using the manhood acts perspective, we focus on how masculinity is constructed among low-status, subordinate men who self-define as “nerds.” We demonstrate that through fantasy role-playing, men are given opportunities to increase their group status, while women are typically relegated to subordinate positions. Increasing status in Dagorhir involved a type of self-enhancement strategy that we termed “epic glory,” which positioned men as social dominants. Epic glory was earned through training activities, at Dagorhir events, and through simulating dramatic death scenes. Such actions served as a performance of masculinity that was not possible for these men outside the role-playing experience. Importantly, women were excluded from many of the opportunities to enact epic glory, which helped reproduce inequalities both among males and between males and females participating in the events.

TL;DR: The authors investigates three eco-urban megastructures in China and compares them in their successes and observable limitations in urban ecology and finds that although China's effort at promoting ecological urban development is commendable, there are major challenges that threaten the success of these projects which can be attributed to the particular relationship between China's political and bureaucratic systems and the practice of urban ecology.
Abstract: The dual challenges and complexities of global climate change and rapid urbanization have prompted international engagement in the promotion of sustainable cities around the world. In recent years, China has shined on the international stage thanks to its commitment to ecological sustainability and the strategies it has deployed to ensure that this commitment would not only remain ink on a chapter of its latest (12th) Five Year Plan. Besides its insistence on subsidizing the national production of solar panels, China is particularly commended for its work on eco-cities. The Beijing Urban Planning Museum explains that eco-cities are a way for China to further its urban development whilst creating more ecological opportunities for its population, and helping out the country with its commitment to cleaning and restoring its environment and diminishing its global environmental footprint. Despite this, the eco-city in China still remains at an experimental stage, and displays weaknesses that may leave an observer doubtful of the future of urban ecology in China. In an attempt to contribute to the limited literature on Chinese eco-cities, this research investigates three eco-urban megastructures—Tianjin Eco-city, Dongtan Eco-city, and Qingdao Eco-park—and compares them in their successes and observable limitations in urban ecology. The study finds that although China’s effort at promoting ecological urban development is commendable, there are major challenges that threaten the success of these projects which can be attributed to the particular relationship between China’s political and bureaucratic systems and the practice of urban ecology.

TL;DR: In this paper, the strategies used by six men to negotiate between their gay and skinhead identities were examined through case studies, and they differed in their definitions of skinheads and the centrality of their gay identity to their overall identity.
Abstract: Through case studies, the strategies used by six men to negotiate between their gay and skinhead identities were examined. Skinheads are defined by traditional masculine values and culture, primarily fashion and music. These men differed in their definitions of skinheads and the centrality of their gay identity to their overall identity. Four of the men, when interacting with other skinheads, strove to minimize their homosexuality. Two of these four relied heavily on fashion and music to validate their skinhead identity. The other two accentuated their masculinity and aggressed against effeminate men. For one, being gay was always central to his identity. For another, his gay identity was balanced with his skinhead and occupational identities.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors provided empirical evidence on the relationships between psychological capital (PsyCap), job embeddedness (JE) and Organizational Cynicism (OC), and found that the dimensions of PsyCap were positively related with JE.
Abstract: Purpose: The objective of this study was to provide empirical evidence on the relationships between Psychological Capital (PsyCap), Job Embeddedness (JE) and Organizational Cynicism (OC). Research Design/Methodology: Using Luthans, 2006 of PsyCap, the study develops a number of hypotheses and tests them. Out of the 338 questionnaires that were distributed to employees at Menoufia University hospitals in Egypt, 315 usable questionnaires were returned, a response rate of 93%. Findings: The results showed that PsyCap is significantly related to the JE and OC. In other words, self-efficacy, optimism, hope and resilience significantly correlated with JE and OC. The results also supported the hypothesized model. The results refer to a direct effect in the opposite direction between the PsyCap and OC of employees. The study findings support the view that the dimensions of PsyCap were positively related with JE. Practical implications: The study suggests that Menoufia University hospitals in Egypt can improve JE by influencing its PsyCap, specifically, by developing self-efficacy, optimism, hope and resilience. The study provided that it is necessary to pay more attention to the dimensions of PsyCap as a key source for organizations to enhance the competitive advantage which is of prime significance for JE and OC. Originality/value: Preliminary evidence of the psychometric properties of the PCQ-24, which measures the construct of PsyCap (hope, self-efficacy, resilience and optimism) on an Egyptian sample, was provided in this study.

TL;DR: It is concluded that whilst PCN focuses on customer-provider interaction, BPMN can depict all communications between different organizational departments, roles and systems.
Abstract: Process chain network (PCN) and business process modeling notation (BPMN) are two alternative ways to visualize a service delivery process. They take different perspectives towards service operations and are used in slightly different circumstances. We examine the similarities and differences between concepts in PCN and BPMN, using the method of conceptual evaluation and suggest ways that they can be used by service designers. Specifically, we conclude that whilst PCN focuses on customer-provider interaction, BPMN can depict all communications between different organizational departments, roles and systems.

TL;DR: In this article, the effects of activating men's subjective masculinity experiences on state self-esteem were investigated by randomly assigning 183 men into either a masculinity priming condition or a control condition.
Abstract: Most research on the link between masculinity-related constructs and psychology well-being has been conducted using correlational rather than experimental research designs. To address this limitation, this study tested the effects of activating men’s subjective masculinity experiences on state self-esteem by randomly assigning 183 men into either a masculinity priming condition or a control priming condition. Consistent with the social identity paradigm, participants who received masculinity priming reported higher state self-esteem than those in the control priming condition. A moderation effect showed that masculinity priming exerted the strongest effect on self-esteem among men with relatively negative self-perceptions. These findings are discussed within the context of the need for more experimental research on masculinity-related constructs.
