TL;DR: In this paper, the relationship of student engagement with academic achievement, behavioral and affective engagement, and dropping out of high school was investigated, concluding with a 13-year longitudinal study.
Abstract: This chapter considers the relationships of student engagement with academic achievement, graduating from high school, and entering postsecondary schooling Older and newer models of engagement are described and critiqued, and four common components are identified Research on the relationship of each component with academic outcomes is reviewed The main themes are that engagement is essential for learning, that engagement is multifaceted with behavioral and psychological components, that engagement and disengagement are developmental and occur over a period of years, and that student engagement can be modified through school policies and practices to improve the prognoses of students at risk The chapter concludes with a 13-year longitudinal study that shows the relationships of academic achievement, behavioral and affective engagement, and dropping out of high school

TL;DR: In this article, a survey of 572 students at a large public university showed that heavy recreational Internet use was correlated highly with impaired academic performance, and loneliness, staying up late, tiredness, and missing class were also intercorrelated with self-reports of Internet-caused impairment.
Abstract: Recent research at colleges and universities has suggested that some college students’ academic performance might be impaired by heavier use of the Internet. This study reviews the relevant literature and presents data from a survey of 572 students at a large public university. Heavier recreational Internet use was shown to be correlated highly with impaired academic performance. Loneliness, staying up late, tiredness, and missing class were also intercorrelated with self-reports of Internet-caused impairment. Self-reported Internet dependency and impaired academic performance were both associated with greater use of all Internet applications, but particularly with much greater use of synchronous communication applications such as chat rooms and MUDs, as opposed to asynchronous applications such as email and Usenet newsgroups.

TL;DR: This paper used forward multiple regression analyses to identify the best combination for predicting GPA in a sample of 201 psychology students, using self-control, SAT score, average grade earned in high school, and 32 personality variables.
Abstract: Total SAT score, average grade earned in high school, and 32 personality variables are examined via forward multiple regression analyses to identify the best combination for predicting GPA in a sample of 201 psychology students. Average grade earned in high school enters first, accounting for 19% of the variance in GPA. Self-control enters second, and SAT third; these account for 9% and 5% of the variance, respectively. No other predictors accounted for substantial portions of variance. This pattern of results converges with findings reported by other investigators using other measures of personality. It was recommended that the global trait of self-control or conscientiousness be systematically assessed and used in college admissions decisions.
