Å feire 70-årsjubileum blir få forskningsinstitutter forunt. Endringer i forskningspolitikk, i finansieringsformer og i høyere utdanning ligger som skiftende rammer rundt det enkelte institutt og driver frem omgrupperinger og sammenslåinger. Forskningens temaer og begrunnelser, hvem som utfører dem, og hvordan den blir organisert, er nødvendigvis i endring. Det gjelder særlig for samfunnsforskningen, som alltid må sikte mot mål som er i bevegelse. Da skal det mye til for et samfunnsvitenskapelig institutt eksisterer lenge nok til å nå 70-årsmerket. For å forstå hvordan det skjer, må det trekkes noen lange linjer gjennom en sammensatt historisk utvikling. Nå er det slik med lange linjer at det kan trekkes uendelig mange av dem. Skal en fortelling bli forståelig, må noen velges ut, andre bli liggende; slik er det for all historieskriving. Jeg som trekker linjene i denne teksten, har hatt et nært forhold til Institutt for samfunnsforskning over mange tiår som forskningsassistent, stipendiat, forsker, leder av instituttet i drøyt 20 år og deretter knyttet til instituttet som forsker i bistilling. En nøytral fremstilling blir umulig; samtidig åpner nærheten for å se sammenhenger som ellers ikke ville kommet godt nok frem. Valget av linjer er preget av at forfatteren er sosiolog av fag, og er vant til å anlegge et organisasjonsperspektiv. Valget av linjer reflekterer også at instituttets første år er blitt omfattende dokumentert og kommentert, mens perioden etter 1980 har vært mer sparsomt behandlet.1 Grunnmuren som Institutt for samfunnsforskning har bygget på siden det ble grunnlagt i 1950, er ambisjonen om et uavhengig institutt som i kraft av selvstendig fagutvikling bidrar til tverrfaglig samfunnsvitenskap i samspill med universitetene. Institutt for samfunnsforskning 70 år : Refleksjoner over noen lange linjer

Diary postings are responses to real-world events, actors and processes that de facto exist and can be identified. This article explores the conditions of capturing voter behaviour and voters’ perceptions of election campaigns by methodologically testing innovative digital instruments for qualitative diary data collection (an app for mobile devices and a webform). We do this in light of three criteria: participant engagement, data relevance and participants’ personal involvement. Based on a real-world methodological experiment in the Fall of 2019 during the Norwegian local election campaign, we found that the app promotes more engagement as to frequency of diary postings, while the webform promoted more comprehensive postings. Concerning participants with different socio-demographic and political profiles, both platforms ensured data relevance in the sense that data match the concepts to be studied: voter behaviour and perception of election campaign. Moreover, both facilitated personal involvement and reflections. The article concludes with a reflection on the potential contribution of the diary method in election studies.

Downs presents a rational calculus of voting that has inspired much of the later work on voting and turnout. Particularly significant was his conclusion that a rational voter should almost never bother to vote. This conclusion, especially as elaborated on by Riker and Ordeshook (1968) has shifted the attention of modern political scientists from explaining why people don't vote to explaining why they do.
